How much?!!

Kind of tied in to the thread about makeupless selfies, but I heard on the radio today that the average woman spends £100,000 in her lifetime on makeup, so a bit under £2k a year I guess if you exclude childhood and very old age. I just don't believe it. How much do you spend? I doubt if I spend £150 a year... How many women could really afford (or want to spend) that?!

Was it just "make up" though, or skincare / toiletries / hair etc?

Like every "statistic" there's out-layers at both ends as well as all sorts of us in the middle who make up this "average" ..... So bear in mind for everyone claiming not to buy much more than the odd Rimmel frosted pink lipstick once every ten years, there will be as many for whom the figures quoted are quite small!

StatisticallyChallenged · 18/03/2014 18:09

I genuinely think it's way off. My spend has been kind of high lately (new job plus rather too much time to kill in airports!!) and I would be really shocked if I am below average.

Nandocushion · 18/03/2014 18:10

Does chapstick count?

sparechange · 18/03/2014 18:10

You'd have to be caking on pounds of the stuff a day to spend that much!

I will admit to being a bit of a make-up snob, so all of mine comes from department store counters, and I wear BB creme, foundation, blusher, mascara and eyeliner most days, with a few eye shadows for going out
Back of the envelope calculations is that all that would cost me about £150 to buy a full 'set' of the things I use regularly
So I would having to fully replace everything in my make up bag every 3 weeks to spend that much?
I think I get through 2 of each a year, except mascara which is probably 3 a year

MichelloBarner · 18/03/2014 18:10

2k a year?! I thought I spent alot on make up and skincare etc, but I don't even get close to 1k never mind 2k!

HighlanderMam · 18/03/2014 18:11

Hmm, I spend a fair amount but not that much.

My foundation is £15 and lasts around 3 months
Concealer is £15 and lasts around 4 months
Mascara is around £12 and will last 6 months
Lip Liner is £9 and lasts around 8 months
Lipstick is £18 and lasts around 6 months
Eyeliner is £12 and lasts around 8 months
Powder is cheap at around £7 and lasts about 3 months
Bronzer the same, cheap at around £8 and lasts about 3 months

I have expensive brushes that cost a fair whack but they don't need replacing often. The stuff I wash them with is cheap. I buy eyeshadow now and then but usually use my brow pallet for eyeshadow, that costs about £18 for 4 shades and lasts about a year.

I'd never spend that amount on make up in a year. I buy Mac and No. 7 mostly.

Optimist1 · 18/03/2014 18:11

Exactly what I was thinking, Drquin - if we're all spending so much less than the average, there must be an awful lot of women spending correspondingly more!! (I reckon I spend about £100 a year if we're talking makeup without skin care or hair stuff.)

Binkyridesagain · 18/03/2014 18:13

This year I have spent £1.99 on nail polish. I don't think I am average.

TinyDiamond · 18/03/2014 18:13

About £350 per year I reckon in total. But that's spread out say I'll get a bottle of perfume at birthday or something.

HighlanderMam · 18/03/2014 18:13

They must be talking about TOWIE types that buy the top end proper expensive stuff and cake it on with a trowel twice in 24 hours, once for day and once for night, and touch ups in between surely?

NewtRipley · 18/03/2014 18:14

I have a makeup box from M&S that I bought for myself when I was 12, 32 years ago. Still use the eyeshadows.

Topseyt · 18/03/2014 18:45

I am one who can hardly be bothered with make-up. I spend zilch in a year on it.

My daughters out-spend me there.

I hate these so-called surveys. They make women sound like total airheads.

iklboo · 19/03/2014 19:25

That's £10k in my lifetime (say, 13-73 - after 73 I probably won't be arsed), not per year!

blanchedeveraux · 19/03/2014 19:28

I'm 48 and probably haven't spent £2k on make up in my entire life! I only wear mascara and concealer and a teeny bit of blusher. I probably spend about £50 a year.

chattychattyboomba · 19/03/2014 19:36

I usually buy bits and bobs here and there and most of the time I have the same make up until it either runs out, dries up, disintegrates or I somehow break it. I have bought expensive items before (Chanel, ysl, Clinique, bobby brown, mac) but if I'm not flush at the time I will replace with high street (maybeline, number 7 etc). Have never had the time nor inclination to try out several different counters at department stores before finding what 'works for me'.
Anyway, I ended up going into bobby brown recently armed with some gift vouchers. I have bought a few things before and liked the coverage, colours etc. by my word! Expensive!
I bought foundation, powder, foundation brush, blush, lip gloss and mascara (the basics) and it cost around £200. I hope it lasts me a while as I won't be spending that amount again in a hurry!
As far as skin care goes, I use 'simple'. My skin likes it and doesn't react...it does what it says on the label! I'm 28 so no need to anything too drastic with wrinkle creams etc, but there is no way I would spend that amount in my lifetime!

SinglePringle · 19/03/2014 19:39

Mmmm, I could easily spend £2k a year if they are including lotions, potions, make up, perfume, hair stuff, body stuff, hair cuts and nail polishes and products. And facials. And waxing. And threading.

Easily done by me. And I have time to run big budget business.

NearTheWindymill · 19/03/2014 19:40

Well here goes - and I'm unusual because I .......finish lipsticks.

Combined foundation: £13.50 x 6 (£83)
Concealer: £11.50 x 4 (£46)
blusher: £10 x 2 (£20)
Mascara: £25 x 2 (50)
Lipstick: £9 x 2 (18)
Facewipes: £7 (3 for 2 x 4 = £56)

(No 7 except the mascara).

So: £273 x 50 = £13,650

At a push I could add perfume at £120 a year and hair at £650 Shock. So that would make a total of: about £51,000.

Birdsgottafly · 19/03/2014 19:44

That figure must include general beauty treatments.

I've just googled and Superdrug's survey averaged at £18,000 over a lifetime on a woman's whole face, so moisturisers, cleansers etc.

I'm sure if you carried out a survey on lots of random crap, including gambling, it would average out the same figures.

I don't agree that it shows Women as "airheads" etc.

Disposable income is just that, income to spend as you please.

Stinklebell · 19/03/2014 19:47

Depends what the £2k yearly average includes.

Just make up? I wear make up every day, but nowhere near.

If it includes hair cuts/colour, nail stuff, perfume, waxing, lotions, face creams, shampoo/conditioners/etc/etc, while still nowhere near £2k, I do spend a fair amount

TwittyMcTwitterson · 19/03/2014 20:14

I HAVE to wear make up in public to avoid scaring small children and even I don't spend that much!

I buy whatever foundation is on offer in avon or venture to Tesco if no bargains. 7 quid per foundation. I use more than one and less than two a month so we'll say £14 a month.

Mascara will last 2-3 months at £5-7 a go

Eyeliner is a must for my squinty eyed and I'll say 2 months odd at £3 max a go.

Bronzer is a collection 2000 beauty at £3 that literally lasts forever.

I think, by average woman, they mean Kim kardashian. Shock

JonSnowKnowsNothing · 19/03/2014 20:16

I spend less than £50/year and my face is always simply but smartly made up. I hate "statistics" like this - they're tossed out there simply to make women look like vapid spendthrifts.

ProlificPenguin · 19/03/2014 21:15

I wear make up every day, I probs buy 6 x foundation a year, mascara x2, lipstick maybe once, twice a year, blusher once a year, a few eyeliners and always random eye shadow that I never use. Total is max £250 per year.

Nennypops · 19/03/2014 21:41

Around £20 a year maximum here.

Famzilla · 19/03/2014 21:54

I first read this thread and thought "no way", but yeah I probably spend that actually! I do have quite sensitive skin though and I am fussy about make up.

Skincare: £180
Lash extensions: £520
Highlights/cuts: £300ish
Foundation/primer: £180
Concealer: £40
Blush/bronzer: £40
Eyeliner/shadows/etc: £30
Hair styling products: £250

Oh dear. Writing it down is frightening!

TwittyMcTwitterson · 20/03/2014 17:58

Famzilla, I'm glad you said that amount on foundation. I was starting to think maybe I put it on with a trowel. Shock
