To get fed up with baby snobbery?

Odaat · 17/03/2014 14:39

Marks and Spencers,Next, Gap - this is all certain kids i know wear. Anything else is beneath them. I am not a snob, never have been, but I do like to invest in quality stuff clothes wise for certain garments (ie jeans as I am long legged) but what i this craze with decking vomiting 3 day old babies out in £38 Next suits!?
Am I less than because I only occasionally dress dd in these over priced garments? I know quality over quantity and i do realise pjs and coats all last longer if made by good brands , but over all i find it a bit obscene how much you see wee kiddies in clothes mre expensive than mine just to boost their parents egos it would seem ... There seems to be a real snobbery with baby clothes and i just feel it a waste of energy and money to invest that much into what kids wear when they are ony in it 2 months at a push anyway!

All the stores you mentioned are bog standard high st stores. Next, M&S etc sell reasonably priced decent quality every day clothes.
Even if someone choses to dress their children in expensive clothes it doesn't make them a snob.

Elsiequadrille · 17/03/2014 16:05

Boden, Joules and Brora for high street choices here. Not highly exciting, but washes and wears relatively well.

Otherwise we like the Scandi brands; Molo, Smafolk, Bobo Choses (though I think that may be Spanish?)

fideline · 17/03/2014 16:05

Of course if OPs mum-friends are narrating what their babies are wearing in the manner of a QVC presenter, than that will be annoying.

Mintyy · 17/03/2014 16:09

If people really care about this stuff, you just have to let them get on with it. I don't seriously imagine they are concerned about what your baby is wearing or where you shop for baby clothes. But if they do, they are being very silly and shallow indeed.

You should see the scramble for second hand clothes at 50p and £1 at my local NCT sales. All the middle class Mummies of Dulwich love a proper bargain Grin.

I was desolate when our local charity shop stopped selling children's clothes ... you could often get 3 items for £1.

KeinBock · 17/03/2014 16:10

What other people choose to spend their money on is of little interest to me TBH. Also, I don't consider the brands mentioned particularly 'snobby.'

Designer labels on small babies can look pretty awful, although I do like Liberty's things. And I quite like this D&G sundress, God help me.

Mintyy · 17/03/2014 16:10

On a more serious note, I think second hand is just more ethical. Baby clothes are worn so briefly, they hardly ever get worn out. I hate to think of the gazillions of little items ending up in landfill somewhere down the line.

Sparkeleigh · 17/03/2014 16:17

If someone actually says that brands other than M&S, Next and Gas are beneath them, then they're obviously a prat but otherwise surely they just buy clothes they like from places they shop themselves?

Wibblypiglikesbananas · 17/03/2014 16:20

Don't give it a second thought. I'm British but live in the US. Here Baby Gap is seen as cheap and cheerful and my children get most compliments when they are wearing Sainsburys TU clothing that I've picked up back home or that grandparents have sent. Little do my American mum friends know - they think I've got impeccable European taste (couldn't be further from the truth - I just like the fact their stuff washes well!).

cosikitty · 17/03/2014 16:22

Surely M&S is a pretty run of the mill shop for people to buy baby clothes? Not exactly Haute Couture.

Trooperslane · 17/03/2014 16:26

Dd has a VERY indulgent dgreat auntie.

As pp said, why get your knickers in a twist re this? I would never buy TWC for ourselves but I do for presents.

Sukebind · 17/03/2014 16:26

I agree with Cosikitty about the inverse snobbery. I really hate Primark and Peacocks because I don't think they are great companies and their stuff has just never seemed well made or long lasting to me. I am fortunate enough that I can buy the occasional thing from Next or Boden and supplement them with sale stuff, Sainsbury's or similar and charity shops/hand-me-downs. But if I choose to buy something from Boden or Joules I could do without comments about how I am attempting to buy into a lifestyle or how crazy I am to waste my money. I am an adult and capable of making an informed decision on my purchases based on budget, quality and whether I like something!

SizzlesSit · 17/03/2014 16:47

I thought M&S were pretty standard TBH. Good price-quality ratio. And packs of vests/pyjamas are very decently priced. I estimated that in the first 6 months DS wore (and I washed) everything 30 odd times (reflux baby) so we definitely got our moneys worth.

LetTheRiverAnswer · 17/03/2014 16:54

Could the problem perhaps be that you're mixing with people with very different values to you? If they are putting a lot of importance on things you're not interested by, that'd be a lot more annoying than just noticing their children wear certain makes.
On the other hand, I know people that won't buy from the sales or dream of using second hand clothes. Bonkers to me, but works to my advantage if they want to spend lots of money!

Dolcelatte · 17/03/2014 16:55

But surely the places you mention are just high street - they are not designer or even particularly high end high street, are they?

Kaekae · 17/03/2014 17:17

I personally think Next and M&S are both pretty standard...and dare I say it, boring!

Marylou62 · 17/03/2014 18:05

Oh Ladies I was so lucky with my DD!!! You'll all be jealous....Bit of background first. I don't have much money and live in an x authority house but have been a nanny and ooh'd and aahd over some of the clothes my charges wore.(White Company!) I hope this isn't snobby because in no way am I a snob. My friend from NCT had a childrens clothes shop and when it shut she kept lots of clothes as she was pregnant with no3. It was a boy so she held a sale....OIlily dresses, retail £75....£5!!! Sarah Louise dresses, little petite batteau vests with frilly bum!!!...Oh I could go on. Every thing was snapped up by her friends...and we are all still friends now...20+ years later. My DD was the last girl born to this group, so tho I bought some stuff, it eventually got given to her anyway...she was the best dressed girl in our village!! The best thing? This friend has now got a little Granddaughter and I have given her it all back to 'borrow'. If DIL likes any of it! I never care what any one dresses their child in unless its lovely...then will coo over it!!

MrsAmaretto · 17/03/2014 18:07

I dress my kids in clothes that I like, that will wash/last well. I've recently been trying different brands of tights for my baby - turns out I think Next are the best for us. Nowt to do with snobbery, all about bobbling, shrinking, thickness & colour last!

Marylou62 · 17/03/2014 18:12

And one of her prettiest dresses, the most commented on, washed well, never needed ironing and now on to 7th child, was from C&A. £3 in a sale. I loved that dress...

Marylou62 · 17/03/2014 18:14

My DD now 20 informed me after working in there last xmas that she's only going to dress any baby of hers in NEXT..!

popterryvent · 17/03/2014 18:16

My DC wear mostly next but I buy it second hand on ebay. Next just seems to fit my kids really well, is good quality and lasts, that's the only reason. It lasts so well that I can pass on everything to a friend with DC a year younger than mine.

Odaat · 17/03/2014 18:18

Maybe I am associating with idiots at times... I am aware Next is big standard high street - whAt I mean is some mums deck their kids in only this stuff and wild frown upon primark (trust me ) ithink i need to hang out more with friends rather than associate with the yummy mummys who are very shallow

OP posts:
Serenitysutton · 17/03/2014 18:18

It's just normal high street stuff though? I thought you were going to be talking about petit bandeau etc!

Odaat · 17/03/2014 18:18

Bogstandard*
