To think that a parking ticket may not be valid if they got the reg wrong?

Got a ticket yesterday for having a teeny bit of my front tyre on a double yellow. They have got one letter of my reg wrong on the printed ticket and so the stubborn part of me thinks it won't be a valid ticket. No photo evidence recorded and no tax disc details noted. AIBU to think about not paying it and seeing what happens?

I'd just say that it wasn't the reg of my car and I had documentation to prove it. But I'd tell them, rather than ignoring the fine.

Write to them and point out this doesn't relate to your vehicle so you won't be paying.

Is it a council or police issued ticket? If so, pay it!!

If they get the details wrong, it isn't valid

I guess you have two options. One would be to contest the ticket, saying the reg on the ticket isn't the same as your car, therefore it is invalid.

The other option would be to ignore it completely. The council will then try and get the reg from the DVLA to write to you, but if it is wrong, then the ticket won't arrive. Riskier though!

I had a parking ticket in a hospital car park once, which had the reg. number correct, but they'd written that the car was a black Range Rover. Mine was dark green and another model, so I wrote to them and said that it wasn't my car and they had made a mistake. They cancelled the ticket.

Was the car parked anywhere near a cctv camera? If so, they may be able to check the car no. that way, and still get you in the end.

Perhaps you could ask the Citizens Advice Bureau and see what they say?

I'd write to them saying the ticket doesn't relate to you car as the reg is not yours.

It is still valid. If it goes to court it is not bar to a prosecution. The ticket will be withdrawn and the incorrect reg will be of no consequence.

Just write and say that isn't your car, it's not valid as they got the details wrong.

I've had this. The ticket doesn't get pursued as they can't follow up with the DVLA: the reg they've got doesn't tally with your vehicle. You'll find if you check the online payment thingy your council almost certainly has that there's no record of the ticket as it'll have been binned as invalid.

They will have photographed the ticket on the car as proof that you got the ticket, so even if you throw away the ticket they'll have the photo. all council traffic wardens carry pocket cameras I believe.

Well, as you say you had some of your tyre on the yellow line then you need to pay the fine....everyone knows that if any tyre is on the yellow line they will issue a ticket.

Whether they have made a mistake on the reg, you know you parked illegally and therefore you should pay the fine.

I had a parking ticket in Brighton and they put my reg number wrong. I think they put an S as a 2 or something so I ignored it and didn't hear anything again, cashback!

It doesn't matter if they've got a photo of a ticket on the car if it's not the right car though, does it? They won't know your address to follow it up because the reg is wrong..

I would right to them and say that's not your reg number. I think they'll cancel it.

I have had two council issued parking tickets in the last three years (different councils) on both occasions I wrote to them and said I was very sorry, I didn't see the signs, or some other such excuse. Both times they wrote back letting me off and just saying don't do it again even though the tickets were correct. One even included a photo of me parked right in front of the 'one hour' parking sign! It's always worth a letter I think.

if they've got the regno wrong, they don't know your name and address.

Why would you want to write and tell them it was you?

Or, you could just pay up.

I know I was lucky! I wrote them a very apologetic, hand written letter, I even commended (sort of) the traffic warden, saying that I didn't dispute at all that the ticket was correctly issued, then added my mitigation. Once that my toddler had needed the toilet and the other time that I thought it was two hours (even though I was parked right in front of the one hour sign) and that I was volunteering in a charity shop at the time.

Never ignore it. Just write to them, say you're appealing it as you don't have a vehicle with that reg number. The easiest thing to do now is ignore but it will be far more hassle in the long run.

Id say just ignore it, how could they find you without correct reg details? Don't ring them and tell them the correct number. Bin the ticket

I would not ignore because I think they will have your reg number. They normally take a picture of your dashboard and your reg number so they can show which car it was. So they should be able to write to you. However you should be able to appeal.

This happened to me once. I did not pay it. How could they find me when they had the wrong Reg number.

I would say that if the ticket was left in the windscreen you can forget about it, if it was posted to you then pay, they have the right registration number even if it is incorrect in the paperwork.
