I love the music, but think they're a thoroughly unlikeable group of people!

They're all are insecure and bitchy, and spend all their time trying to impress their friends. Sandy isn't I suppose, but she shouldn't have gone back to Danny and then changed for him like she did.

Frenchy's the easiest to like imo, and she's not exactly sensible...

blanche... were those really the lyrics? Wow! We used to sing it in the playground at school and I think we just made them up, definitely didn't sing those... ShockBlush

I really like Marty, loved Coach Calhoun - hated Patty!

Reminiscing now... Grin

Kenickie's nice. Nice but dim, admittedly.

Sparklingbrook · 16/03/2014 17:31

YY Sandy changed for Danny. That is a no-no. She should have gone back to Oz and found a nice boy. But saying that quite what she was up to getting friendly down in the sand I dread to think.

And they are all ancient, playing schoolkids.

Justawaterformeplease · 16/03/2014 17:34

I like the headmistress's assistant, the one with the xylophone.

Nishky · 16/03/2014 17:36

Danny changed for Sandy too.

LetZygonsbeZygons · 16/03/2014 17:38

hate the lyrics, hate the songs,(except the title track) hate the fact its supposed to be high school and everyones in their 30's, its rude and little girls love singing the songs.

give me high school musical any day. yes its sappy but at least its a proper kids/family film!

lollilou · 16/03/2014 17:47

Some sad things have happened to the cast.
Danny (John Travolta) had an autistic son who died.
Kenickie (Jeff Conway) had a alcohol and drug problem that led to his death.
Sandy(Olivia Newton John) Has had breast cancer also her long term partner 'disappeared' presumed dead (later found alive and well)
Leo/crater face (Dennis Stewart) Died from Aids.

Sparklingbrook · 16/03/2014 17:48

Stockard Channing is amazing in everything she does.

And what kind of brave parents must she have had to name her Stockard! Not a usual entry on the Baby Names boards I would guess.

Grease is massively sexist and sends an awful message to teenage girls. However it is very good at capturing the teenage zeitgeist of middle American high school and the cross section of teens is not something you find anywhere other than the melting pot of America.

Going by the characters' names:

Sandy Olsson - White Australian, probably Swedish descent
Danny Zuko - Hungarian
Rizzo - Italian American
Kenickie - probably Polish or German
Etc.

Good point Kim. Grin

The bit in the film that grates my carrot is when the car takes off at the end. Wht oh why oh why does the car do that? Angry

JonSnowKnowsNothing · 16/03/2014 17:56

The Headmistress is fantastic - perfect death stare, wonderfully withering tone...I aspire to be her Grin

Ilovehamabeads · 16/03/2014 17:59

hearts her stage name is Stockard Channing, her parents called her Susan Stockard. :)

LaurieFairyCake · 16/03/2014 18:00

I love Rizzo, beautifully acted too.

EirikurNoromaour · 16/03/2014 18:03

Hearts, I always assumed it was Danny zucco - Italian. But maybe that's an invented pronunciation.
I hated the fact that the 'fat' girl was never fat. Stupid.

FabBakerGirl · 16/03/2014 18:09

It is sad to think so many of the cast have died as it doesn't feel that long ago it was on.

Stockard Channing was 34 when she played Rizzo.

monicalewinski · 16/03/2014 18:22

ShockShockShock

I love grease.

You'll be slagging off Dirty Dancing next.

EirikurNoromaour · 16/03/2014 18:42

Rizzo was awesomely feminist. I love her line 'I'm going to get my kicks while I'm still young enough to get them' and her song is amazing.

Amandine29 · 16/03/2014 18:43

Who was the fat girl? I must have missed that.

Financeprincess · 16/03/2014 18:48

Jan. Allegedly. She must have been all of a size 12! She liked apple pie, so clearly she was obese.

phonebox · 16/03/2014 18:56

People were on the whole thinner back in the 50s though. Jan was probably relatively 'fat'.

I adore Rizzo. For my last birthday we did a Grease bar-crawl - and Rizzo is just so easy to dress up as.

Plus her song, as others have mentioned, is the best in the whole film.

But yes, the way Sandy changes for Danny is hugely sexist. I was surprised, when I found out it came out in the 70s (after the whole feminist movement) that this didn't become more of an issue.

VoyageDeVerity · 16/03/2014 19:02

Cha cha di Gregorio was amazing too...

The dancing is pretty amazing at that ball.
