To think people who don't use their indicators should be fined?

I am probably BU and there are plenty of other annoying foibles of my fellow drivers but really...!

I thought everyone was nice and happy in California??? Not saying thank you is unforgivable. Indicators could be stupidity. Lack of thanks is ignorance Shock

Melfish · 12/03/2014 22:28

EveesMummy try telling that the pedestrian has right of way when they are already crossing to the bastard TNT van driver who almost ran me over when he screeched round the corner, without indicating, in Victoria the other day. Oh how I wish I'd had HappyFishwifeTwat's laser beam to hand.

TwittyMcTwitterson · 12/03/2014 22:32

I don't understand why people drive badly full stop BUT if you drive a van emblazoned with the name of the company that pays your wages and I unique registration so you're easily tracked. Knob ends. Glad you weren't squished

Alisvolatpropiis · 12/03/2014 22:41

Yanbu.

This seems to have become amazingly common in the 8 years since I passed my driving test.

soontobeslendergirl · 12/03/2014 22:42

I don't get the "I only use my indicators if there is another road user". If you are using your indicators when you should be, it becomes so automatic that you just use them even when driving on a deserted street. I never consciously think "oh there are no vehicles or pedestrians around to benefit from me signalling at this roundabout" I just drive and indicate where I am going, why wouldn't you?

Anyone who says that they do is fooling themselves that they always use them when necessary imo

MaidOfStars · 12/03/2014 22:53

I should be using my indicators to indicate intention, which necessarily includes a target to indicate to. It is not automatic for me to turn my indicator on, it is automatic for me to check my mirrors/road/etc then turn my indicator on if necessary. Obviously, the checking part may not be extensive as any driver should know where stuff is around them anyway.

soontobeslendergirl · 12/03/2014 23:03

I agree that you are checking , but it is still automatic to flick the indicator. It is for me anyway. I do tend to be driving at busy times and on school routes so there is usually always someone there either on the road or the pavement who could potentially be wanting to cross etc. I'd rather indicated when it wasn't needed than fail to indicate when it is.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 12/03/2014 23:05

YY, OP.

If no-one sees you indicate, no-one is hurt. So why not do it? Even if you think the road is clear/it's obvious?

I think people should be fined for signalling badly, too. A couple of months ago I was behind a learner driver. The roundabout at the top of our road has four major exits and two minor ones, including our road. I know by now that most people who drive past me signalling left, actually intend to go straight past me instead. Unfortunately, the shape of the roundabout means people slow down as they come up to this turn, so if you are a learner, and you've been taught to look for signal plus change in speed, you risk thinking these people made what they signal.

The lass I saw pulled out, and the idiot signalling left carried on and went right into the side of her. He got out and yelled and her and her mum who was shaking like a leaf. I gave them and him my number and said I'd seen he was clearly signalling to turn left, but I've not heard back so I don't know what happened.

CumberCookie · 12/03/2014 23:18

At best it's bloody annoying, at worst its dangerous. USE YOUR FECKIN INDICATORS

soontobeslendergirl · 12/03/2014 23:23

Is there a penalty for not indicating if a policeman saw you?

Not sure about the answer to your original question, but I've been behind police cars that don't indicate either....

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 12/03/2014 23:24

Megrim - I must have the only BMW with indicators, because I use them lots! And it's an automatic.

Can we add the muppets who don't use their lights when there is poor visibility? Do they not think it's helpful - maybe even safer - if other drivers and road users can see them?

fideline · 12/03/2014 23:25

Can't remember when I last saw a policeman enforcing rules of the road. More than a decade at least

soontobeslendergirl · 12/03/2014 23:28

ooh yes, dismal rainy misty morning and there is always some fecker driving about in a grey car with no lights!! give us half a chance of seeing you why don't you??

soontobeslendergirl · 12/03/2014 23:32

on my daily journey, i go from a 30 speed limit to a 40, to a 60, briefly to a 70 then a 50, then 30 then 20 and the same in reverse (followed by a 10 in the work carpark :) ) . All in the space of 12 minute drive. Every so often there is some arse that drives at 40 - the whole route!!

Yes ... but the people who claim 'no-one was there so I didn't signal' obviously get it wrong sometimes, don't they?!

I always wonder how this works as a justification ... surely it is clear you know you weren't paying attention?

Maybe we need to change the test and having 'you're not perfect' as the watchword!

Lovesabadboy · 12/03/2014 23:58

I remember giving a friend a lift home one night. It was early hours of the morning and we were way out in the countryside.
She nearly wet herself laughing at me when I indicated at every turn when there wasn't a soul (apart from the odd fox, rabbit or badger) to indicate for.
It is just utter habit for me - I don't even think about it. It is so much easier to do it all the time rather than on a case by case basis.

Why wouldn't you?
It is hardly a taxing task that will take much effort!

ThatVikRinA22 · 13/03/2014 00:02

god this drives me insane.....we were behind a 4 x 4 and horsebox the other day at a junction - we were going left - there was room to pull up next to the 4 x 4 and go left if he was going right - but being british and polite i didnt want to do that if he was going left.....he just sat there for bloody ages without indicating so i had no idea where he was going.....

drives me MAD!

I indicate whether there is anyone to see it or not. However, when I took my advanced driving course I was taught to only indicate if there is someone to see it Confused

ThatVikRinA22 · 13/03/2014 01:24

i did the police driving course and we also get taught to indicate if there is someone to see it and not if there isnt - this proves that we are using our mirrors and observational skills!

but
its the drivers who dont bother no matter what that drive me to distraction....

LRDtheFeministDragon · 13/03/2014 01:30

Yeah, but vicar, ideally people who cause accidents by failing to signal would never pass a test. Yet they do.
