Because the majority of people on there at the moment are a) whining cunts b) boasting cunts and c) irritating cunts
I know this sounds terribly boring but god FB don't half bring out the worst in some people!

OP posts:

"Facebook is only as bad as the people you have as friends. It's not FB's failt that some people have added shitty people as friends."

Exactly, all these folk moaning about FB - they are your friends, you have control. Makes you look a bit numpty like to be moaning about it.

wobblyweebles · 12/03/2014 23:28

I have hidden a few people. One posts several times a day about the Scottish independence vote. Another posts constant glurge. Another is a gun totin' Obummer-hatin' Murican.

Now they're hidden my news thread is much as ViviPru describes.

ViviPru · 13/03/2014 00:02

Haha yes Wobbly, I have to admit my FB utopia was achieved after hiding that sweet boy I went to primary school with who is now a crack-dealing EDL-supporting nutjob one or two less savoury folk!

GhettoPrincess001 · 13/03/2014 06:00

I agree dancingnancy and wobblyw

Just streamline it like anything in life where you get a choice. I've been quietly unfriended by people on Facebook who I can't even remember.

Now I've learned to, 'switch off' people who are ridiculous on FB.

I'm surprised that the people who I thought were normal just post the most mawkish or political or religious rubbish.

I feel I see another side of them via Facebook and feel embarrassed to know them.

I also think there's an element of, 'getting in on it' by people who have to post nonsense.

CuttedUpPear · 13/03/2014 07:25

I agree, it's quite easy to tailor your fb to your own requirements.
In your newsfeed, everyone whose posts appear there has an invisible arrow in the top right of their comment. Hover in this area, when the arrow appears choose from the drop down menu. You can opt to unfollow a person. They will never know, you will never get to see them spouting nonsense. Win win.

Also you can put your fb friends into categories - the fb standard Restricted is a good one but you can create your own settings so that certain people don't see your photos or what you post.

Thirdly, you can change your settings so that no one can post anything on your page or tag you in a photo without it getting your consent first.

All this only takes a few minutes and then you are set up.

I have to use fb for my work, I have around 1300 'friends' but most of them never see anything personal of me on there or vice versa! (Though I will admit that a spring clean is due).

Stinklebell · 13/03/2014 08:45

I don't understand the "I deactivated and now I'm much happier"

Really? What are your friends posting? How does Facebook have that much of an effect on your life that you are "much happier" for deactivating it? It's a tool for communicating with people nothing more. You have full control of your friends list and newsfeed - hide, unfriend or deactivate the account, change your settings so you can control who posts on your wall or sees your photos.

If people post shit that offends you, why don't you just unfriend them, or hide their posts?

I don't get the angst

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 13/03/2014 08:47

If people post shit that offends you, why don't you just unfriend them, or hide their posts?

Well, why not get rid of it all together? It's not actually the law to have an account Wink

cherrytree63 · 13/03/2014 09:06

Cutted'pear...I've been trying for ages to work out how to restrict being tagged in people's pics, how do you do it please?
I was off work after surgery and someone posted an oldphoto of me dancing and it caused some bother with my manager who thought I was out gallivanting while off sick!

HairyGrotter · 13/03/2014 09:20

The benign shit that is spouted on FB, along with losing respect for folk you had previously held in high regard added to my decision to remove myself from FB, also, it eroded my faith in humanity as a whole.

Oh and I don't give a fuck about what most people are doing or eating.

If you like that sort of thing, crack on, if you like having faith in humanity, run away from social media, Mumsnet included.

Pigletin · 13/03/2014 09:20

cherry try this:
www.hongkiat.com/blog/prevent-facebook-tagging/

I hope it works for you. A little googling goes a long way.

Mintyy · 13/03/2014 09:23

Oh that's a sad way of looking at it Hairy. Hope you are ok.

HairyGrotter · 13/03/2014 09:30

Haha I'm wonderful, thank you for the concern Wink

I like having faith in humanity, I actually much prefer Twitter and quite active on that. Great for debates, instant news, speaking with like minded folk. FB just has a different feel, and it wasn't right for me.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 13/03/2014 13:12

I hear ya hairy!Grin

Smilesandpiles · 13/03/2014 13:41

Agree with Hairy but not sure about the mumsnet bit.

Only reason is, lately, MN is the only place where I don't feel like a complete waster and failure. I'm the Daily Mail's worst nightmare and more and more people in RL are getting bolder in spouting that shite and it's starting to get me down, I've now lost 2 of my so called mates tahnk to that line of thinking.

MN, on the whole, know there is more to the story than what you hear and there's hundreds more that know what you are going through because they are too.

MN a the moment is my lifeline.

Smilesandpiles · 13/03/2014 13:41

*thanks

TheFabulousIdiot · 13/03/2014 13:44

lolling at the idea that twitter is for the more sophisticated social networker.

ViviPru · 13/03/2014 13:57

Haha yes TFI, Twitter: the thinking woman's oversharing platform of choice

wobblyweebles · 13/03/2014 14:55

That's the best definition of Twitter I've seen in a while.

Cuxibamba · 13/03/2014 15:20

Go ahead. Do what you want. I stick to Twitter and Instagram tbh, but it's your choice.

Thank-you Pigletin!

Shockers · 13/03/2014 18:03

I like fb too. I delete anyone who puts anything I find offensive on, regardless of whether they are friends or family and I don't post anything that I wouldn't say in RL. I find these rules help to make it a positive thing rather than an annoyance. It's kind of a diary that I update daily. I hope that my daily postings don't offend my friends!
