To not understand the point of Minecraft?

Or is there no point? DD (7) has recently started playing it, she just appears to be wondering around aimlessly occasionally she plonks a few bricks down. Is she supposed to find things? Complete things? There must be more to it than this?!

3d printer printout sounds amazing.

Backtobedlam · 10/03/2014 22:22

Do you remember Sim City that was really popular when we were growing up? Seems a bit like that to me, go round creating, building and expanding. It's hard to start with but once you get into it and can build some of the more fun things it's pretty good fun.

BaconAndAvocado · 10/03/2014 22:48

DS2 age 7 is utterly obsessed with all things Minecraft.

It's good to have my thoughts confirmed that the game is actually not that bad and encourages creativity etc.

If I could just get Stampy a new, less annoying laugh then all would be peachy Smile

CalamityKate · 10/03/2014 23:03

I always assumed it was a lovely building game until I came across DS2 shooting a cow!

OddFodd · 10/03/2014 23:12

Lovecat - if you tame an ocelot, you can make it into a pet cat so DS tells me.

We had a 20 minute discussion yesterday on why wolves don't make good pets in Real Life :o

littledrummergirl · 10/03/2014 23:18

Ds2 watches you tube videos while playing the game.
Ds1 has now started making you tube videos of them playing the game.
They are both really into it. They also play sims.
I dont get either of the games although I do like scrabble.

ouryve · 10/03/2014 23:19

DS1 worked out, the other day, how to build a very small rail track, in a circle and put multiple carriages on it so they whizzed around in a circle then exploded loud enough to make us all jump!

It's mostly free play. That's the whole point of it. There ar e modes where you do have ot become self sufficient and survive, but also modes where you just experiment and find things out for yourself.

DS1 doesn't approve of stampy, btw, simply because he's on youtube :o

Jaynebxl · 10/03/2014 23:21

Is it possible to play minecraft without the guidance of Stampy?

FanFuckingTastic · 10/03/2014 23:28

It's great for keeping the kids quiet. Only time they aren't fighting and hollering at each other or getting distracted and wandering off is when Minecraft is on. It's a great tool for getting housework done without multiple interruptions.

Down side is you have to listen to them talk about Minecraft all the time, and pretend to be interested. I'm going to try and get into it myself so I at least understand half of what he says.

HadABadDay2014 · 10/03/2014 23:32

Kate you need to kill animals for food.

It lend to ds asking is that really where meat came from, which I replied yes.

Jayne yes it is possible to play with out stampie.

HadABadDay2014 · 10/03/2014 23:33

Creepers explode, so don't attack them around anything you have built.

Jaynebxl · 11/03/2014 03:59

Hadabadday I'm not sure I can convince my son of that!

coralanne · 11/03/2014 04:11

DGS celebrated his 8th birthday three days ago and my DD made him a minecraft cake. Looked absolutely brilliant. Although it took forever to make. DGS has been into minecraft for several years now and still doesn't look like losing interest.

All the DC at the party said it was the best cake they have ever seen or eaten.

NinjaLeprechaun · 11/03/2014 06:28

My daughter just spent the weekend building castles in the air. Which I think sums her the game up quite well.

One nice thing, from what I can tell, it can be as simple or as complicated as you want to make it.

BertieBotts · 11/03/2014 06:42

Well you can live off cake and bread and apples if you don't want to kill animals Grin

I am worried that ds is starting to develop the stampy laugh. He makes me laugh when he is on Xbox live (only has one school friend on it!) " It is like driving me mad, all this lag yeah it just glitches all the time" It is like being sat next to stampy!

Is it sad of me to admit that I have sort of cyber stalked stampy and Ballistic squid as I wanted to know what they looked like? Grin

And I will admit that I watched stampy and squids tea off you tube video in full by my own volition. Grin

Whatevertheweather · 11/03/2014 18:18

I actually feel like you're all talking another language. I'm officially an old gimmer, this must have been how my mum felt when she didn't understand Tetris on my gameboy!

fanoftheinvisibleman · 11/03/2014 20:39

What you need are a few stampy videos on youtube. If you manage to sit through a couple (good luck Grin) you'll be up to speed!

Jaynebxl · 13/03/2014 07:20

Fanoftheinvisible did you see Stampy on bbc breakfast last week? Every mum would be proud of him, he came over as such a sweet boy!

fanoftheinvisibleman · 13/03/2014 09:40

I didn't no...we rarely have tv on in a morn as I potter around to the radio and ds watches erm stampy Grin

I am very pleased to hear he is a nice boy!

OddFodd · 13/03/2014 09:46

I didn't see it Jayne but my mum called me to tell me about it :o

Kim I think it will be a sad day when stampy retires.

BaconAndAvocado · 13/03/2014 11:58

DS2 was over the moon to finally see something of worth on BBC Breakfast Smile
