to not want to risk money on a "Marmite" memory foam mattress?

They seem to be "love it or hate it" and I dont want to risk it.

Money has been v tight for well over a year but I have had back and pelvis pain for several years now and have been saving up my birthday and Xmas money (plus bits and bobs here and there) to get a new mattress. Like the OP on the other thread about these mattresses (that inspired me to post) I am married to a man that could sleep on a washing line, so whatever I get wont bother him either way. But for some reason he is pushing for a memory foam one.

I think that as I know that a very firm normal mattress will be good for me I should go for that, rather than risk spending money on something that I may fall in love with, but equally I may hate but be stuck with as I cant afford to replace it. He seems to think that as most people we know who have one think that MF mattresses are the best thing since the wheel, we should get one.

AIBU to tell him to get one when he has saved up and paid for it, and until then I get to choose?

It's very very hot to lie on, the heat builds up so lying on one in a sale room doesn't show how it will feel.
It's sticky and hard to get out of. I am quite fit but I got stuck in it every night, actually having to roll of it with difficulty, impossible to get up in an ordinary way.

It's also extremely heavy and hard
to move.

My parents have a Dux bed, have no idea what's in it and think it cost a fortune but I have slept on it and it is far and away the most comfortable thing I have ever lain down on.

LittleprincessinGOLDrocks · 10/03/2014 22:46

My experience of the Isleep is very different to what Marcipex experienced with her mattress.
Ours is lighter to move than any spring mattress we have had. Neither of us has had any trouble getting out of the bed, nor have we found it very hot to lie on.

I guess it comes down to each Memory foam mattress being different, so before you buy it is probably best you read a lot of reviews.

We bought a Tempur mattress from Dreams, with a 40 night exchange policy.
I was more concerned that DH about it - he was convinced that it was the answer to his dodgy back. I kind of got used to it, but wasn't all that keen, it was comfy at first, but I tend to roll about a bit at night and as it sinks into your body position it means that if you wake up then you're kind of jerked out of position. DH didn't like it at all, found it too sinky and not comfortable, so yay it went back.

Dreams were good about the exchange, but we had to exchange for something of greater value so ended up with a hideously expensive mattress that we are just about to pay off in a few months ( interest free credit).

ThornOfCamorr · 10/03/2014 23:08

DH was desperate for us to buy a memory foam mattress (he suffers with a very painful bad back). We went away for his work for a few months and our apartment had a brand new very expensive one on our bed. We both ended up hating it as we got so overheated and I felt trapped in the thing. I think if you like a soft mattress no matter what your ailment, then memory foam is for you. If you don't then I wouldn't bother, it was awful to sleep on. DH slept on another mattress during our travels which to me felt like a plank of wood- it was a thin pad on a plank of wood- dd2 was also of this opinion but DH said he had the best couple of nights sleep ever! He has been campaigning for this type of hard mattress at home ever since and we need to find a compromise Grin

My experience of memory foam is the complete opposite to experiences posted here, I'm really surprised.

It's not hot, good job as I'm the hottest person in the whole world (and not in a good way!)

It's hard, took a while to get used to but love it now.

No problems sinking into it and I'm no light weight, no problems getting out or moving either and I have mobility issues.

It was the best money we ever spent.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 10/03/2014 23:18

Actually I have to use an under blanket as the mattress is a tad too cold.

ThornOfCamorr · 10/03/2014 23:19

It's really odd isn't it dame DH was convinced this type of mattress would be perfect for his problem. We just never found it comfortable but many of his colleagues at work swear by them!

LetTheRiverAnswer · 10/03/2014 23:24

Our memory foam matress was given away too. I actually found it very comfy and snuggly, until my hip pain came back with a vengence. I bought it after my mum recommended it, as did my sister, and over the same sort of time frame we were all hobbling about. Perhaps we have similar weaknesses that don't suit memory foam, but it was bad for us.
Matress shopping is the worst. Expensive, important but impossible to tell the diffference, any five minute mid day lie down feels pretty good to me!

Vintagecakeisstillnice · 10/03/2014 23:25

We have a memory foam topper that I got on one of those bargain sites for £50.

Like you didn't want to chance spending out so much and hating it. I also have a bad back, currently waiting on spinal surgery.

I love love love it. I wouldn't be without it.

ouryve · 11/03/2014 00:12

If you have bargain memory foam, btw, do check the fire safety labels are genuine. That stuff is scary if it's not flame retardant.

Marylou62 · 11/03/2014 08:51

I was really lucky and was given a very expensive one as they wanted superking size. (I know....second hand.... but I babysat for them loads and slept in it overnight many a time). I had wanted one as I have hip and shoulder pain but was worried about cost like OP. But I love it and it is like sleeping on a cloud!! I don't feel any pressure points at all.It is harder to get out off but I don't toss n turn like before. I have only had it this winter so can't answer the too hot thing...but I hope it will be ok as I am going through the menopause and only use a 4.5 tog duvet. I also bought jersey sheets from Tesco. From dreading bed, I now look forward to a full night sleep.

shewhowines · 11/03/2014 09:28

Our memory foam one is also sprung pocket. You can get different levels/numbers of springs which determine the firmness.

andadietcoke · 11/03/2014 09:37

I adore our (cheapo, under £200) memory foam mattress. We got it from www.hypnia.com about six years ago and it's still going strong. DH's back problems are all sorted and I don't roll into him in the night any more (he's a bit heavier than me!).

I would love a Tempur. We stayed at a friend's who had one and it was amazing (we spent £200 on the cloud pillows the next day which I have never regretted) but we have a cat with a tendency to wee on the bed and I'd be absolutely devastated if that happened to a bed that cost that much.

Normalisavariantofcrazy · 11/03/2014 09:38

I hate memory foam mattresses but love my medium firm pocket sprung mattress and I've got a horrendous back
