to not want to risk money on a "Marmite" memory foam mattress?

They seem to be "love it or hate it" and I dont want to risk it.

Money has been v tight for well over a year but I have had back and pelvis pain for several years now and have been saving up my birthday and Xmas money (plus bits and bobs here and there) to get a new mattress. Like the OP on the other thread about these mattresses (that inspired me to post) I am married to a man that could sleep on a washing line, so whatever I get wont bother him either way. But for some reason he is pushing for a memory foam one.

I think that as I know that a very firm normal mattress will be good for me I should go for that, rather than risk spending money on something that I may fall in love with, but equally I may hate but be stuck with as I cant afford to replace it. He seems to think that as most people we know who have one think that MF mattresses are the best thing since the wheel, we should get one.

AIBU to tell him to get one when he has saved up and paid for it, and until then I get to choose?

If you get it from Ikea you can actually try it for a few months and return it if you don't like it. We got one over christmas and we love it.

JRmumma · 10/03/2014 08:31

Ive just bought a memory foam topped sprung mattress. Best of both Imo. Still firm but with a sqidgy top that moulds around your body so good if you sleep on your side like me.

I couldn't stand the feel of the full memory foam ones tbh and ive heard they make you sweat.

dexter73 · 10/03/2014 09:08

We have a sprung memory foam mattress. It is the most comfortable mattress I have ever slept on. I have a bad back too. Never had a problem with sweating or being too hot.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 10/03/2014 09:26

We have a Tempur one too, it is fab! Iirc you can send it back if you don't get on with it but they suggest giving it 6 weeks.

LadySybilVimes · 10/03/2014 09:31

We had a memory foam mattress. At first (for the first 6months) it was fabulous and really good, however after several years it now has dips in it and you kind of get stuck in it and can't turn over. Both my dh and I have much worse back pain because of this and so just this morning we have had a firm sprung mattress delivered. I am so very pleased not to be sleeping on the memory foam tonight, it is far and away the worst mattress we have ever had.

HippyPottyMouth · 10/03/2014 12:07

We have one and I loathe it. DH says it reduces his back pain, so we're stuck with the bastard thing until we can afford a new house with separate bedrooms

kinkyfuckery · 10/03/2014 12:16

I've just switched from a memory foam to a spring mattress.

Tried out every mattress in the showroom then decided on this one. Asked how much it cost and it was only £129!!! Bloody bargain, I love it!

Bogeyface · 10/03/2014 12:25

Thanks all.

I will get the sprung mattress. I just cant risk the money on something that may not work, or even make it worse!

:)

I've found my sweet spot with a firm, pocket sprung mattress with a memory foam topper on. Plenty of support from the mattress, but I couldn't turn over on it without waking up in pain. The topper added just enough give to the surface to make it perfect, though. Only problem is that I struggle to sleep on anything else, now.

Bogeyface · 10/03/2014 12:39

Corus interesting point. Perhaps its because men are (generally) more "straight up and down" where as we have curves and bumps in all directions!

Perhaps half and half would work, memory on his side, springs on hers!

I would definitely recommend Factory Beds Direct, have a look at their website, there's loads of info about mattresses. (I have no affiliation or anything!)

zeno · 10/03/2014 19:41

Natural latex topper is what we have. Love it. Came with a 30 day no quibble return thingy, but loved it right away. Latex doesn't have the sweaty heat problem you get with tempur.

Armadale · 10/03/2014 19:48

We have a Tempur and I think it is brilliant now but didn't for at least the first month (we had it with a 90 day return), at first I thought it had been a hideous mistake.

Why don't you try one on 90 day trial and if you don't get on with it, then go for a sprung mattress instead, that way you will have tried it out without risking the money.

PIL bought one of the Tempur rip off brands of memory foam for their spare bed and it is rubbish compared to a Tempur.

(Two disclaimers though- they are massively heavy- I can't lift it on my own to clean under it. Also they are very warm- I love this as it gets really cosy but my DSis couldn't stand it when she slept on it for that reason).

LittleprincessinGOLDrocks · 10/03/2014 19:58

We bought the Isleep memory foam mattress last year as I was suffering with constant horrific back pain. I have to say it is the most comfortable mattress I have ever slept on, and I wouldn't be without it now.
The range starts at £99 for a single, £149 for a double, and it was worth every single penny. Argos Sell them here . You can take it home in the back of your car as they come rolled up like a big rug. You then unroll and leave it for 3 days to grow to normal size. I absolutely adore mine, and would never go back to a spring filled mattress.
We did try a Silent Night that was half memory foam, half springs, and after just 12 months the mattress collapsed - hence trying the Isleep. So avoid Silent Night like the plague.

happylittlevegemites · 10/03/2014 20:17

Slightly different, but we recently bought a mattress with a built in latex topper. My husband had always wanted memory foam, bu I find the "feel" very icky. So it was a sort of compromise.

I'm th sort of person who can sleep ANYWHERE and I loathed the fucking thing. What we've done though is turn it upside down and put a feather/down topper on it and now it is perfect.

Interestingly, my husband didn't like it either despite being the one who was so keen on foam.

Bogeyface · 10/03/2014 20:17

Thanks for the link Little they are very affordable, so not so much of a disaster if it is no good.

I have to admit though, I do love my sprung mattresses!

I am not sure, but I don't think a very firm mattress is necessarily the right thing for back pain sufferers

Marcipex · 10/03/2014 20:19

I hated ours, it is top of the range, cost a lot, and is now propped against the wall in the spare room!

NewtRipley · 10/03/2014 20:20

My back pain has been sorted using a soft mattress.

RoseLavenderBlue · 10/03/2014 20:26

We have a memory foam one from Dreams, had it about three years. It is comfortable but I think it's starting to retain the dips from where you lie. Also as others have said unthread, it can be very hot. We use a 4.5 tog duvet all year round. It is also very heavy, have to get DH to help move it out from the wall to get the fitted sheet on!

Bogeyface · 10/03/2014 20:27

I hate soft mattresses, thats nothing to do with my back, I just prefer firm ones.

I too have bad hip pain that keeps me awake at night and so we bought a memory foam mattress after hearing how wonderful they were, we paid a lot for it hoping it was a good investment even though we had to have it on finance to be able to afford it and opted for a fairly firm one on the salesman's recommendation.

It was a huge mistake.

My hips were worse than ever within 2 nights, it was hot, uncomfortable, bloody hard work rolling over on it but because we couldn't afford a new one we had to stick with it for 2 years and even then had a years worth of repayments going out of my bank for a mattress that was in the tip.

itsbetterthanabox · 10/03/2014 22:04

Go to hotel that has memory foam and see if you like it Grin

itsbetterthanabox · 10/03/2014 22:10

When people say memory foam is horrible in what way do you mean? What does it actually feel like?
I currently have a latex mattress which is very comfy but I can't afford another.
