Nanny
There are quite a few threads on mn about language and how it relates to the history of psychiatry etc.

Yabu to use the word mental.

Wrt to your OP, I'm walking around in a t shirt but my Dad would be bundled up in a thick coat and jumper and be telling me to 'be careful as this weather is deceptive.'Grin

Lots of sleeveless tops and sandals out in SW London today.
And men in shorts.

On Tuesday a blue sky meant 8 degrees and wind. How did I know today would be any different when I left the house?

I've had the opposite today.
We just came out of a -20 winter and today is a lovely sunny 13 degree's. so while all of the natives around me are still with big coats, boots and hats. I've just been for a walk in cropped ankle trousers, plimsols, t shirt and tracksuit jacket.
People are looking at me like i've committed a crime :) for my English bones, this is warm so I don't care what they think.

So yabu, people all feel heat/cold differently.

"It's now very common to hear people say, 'I'm rather offended by that.' As if that gives them certain rights. It's actually nothing more... than a whine. 'I find that offensive.' It has no meaning; it has no purpose; it has no reason to be respected as a phrase. 'I am offended by that.' Well, so fucking what."

YANBU to be warm in the sunshine, YABU to use the word "mental".

Report
bobot · 09/03/2014 17:39

copa, would you have said the same if the word had been "retarded"?

Well I've just seen someone in dungarees with a bikini top. In March Hmm.

Lovely to see blue skies and sunshine - not so nice to see young girls poured into denim shorts and vest tops sporting hastily applied fake tan and saw a few lads with third shirts off heading toward the beach earlier. It's only 16 degrees max here today - hardly shorts and shirt off weather.

I don't like 'mental' in the same way as I don't like 'gay' used pejoratively. Whingey? Meh, just saying it how I see it.

I'm not sure about the coats thing. It was lovely in the park today but bit chilly now. Maybe they'd been out for the whole day/evening.

Get well soon Strait.

There were people in the supermarket wearing vest tops and shorts this morning. I mean, ffs, it is fucking March and not that warm. Tossers. I am with the coat and scarf brigade until June.

Some people are offended by the word mental, some are not. Im not offended in the least by it, nor by the word crazy.

Yes I'll suggest an alternative. Perhaps the OP could have said that she thought it strange that people were wearing heavy outdoor clothing in warm weather.

As someone who has been mentally ill I do find casual use of words like mental to
describe people thoughtless at best.

I've been mentally ill and I agree with Copafeel. That was the quote I was trying to think of.

YANBU.

Oh FFS.

Seriously, MN is crap these days. You are not "allowed" to say anything anymore without someone, somewhere going: ahem, you're not allowed to say that.

And for the record, I actually have mental health problems!

Due to who I am in RL, I could choose to be offended a hundred times a day but I don't.

Does anyone on her genuinely think that I meant it in a horrible way and they can say hand on heart that they have never called someone mental or crazy when someone has done something which is to them, a bit odd?

I have been in Central London today, the weather was nice but I would put it as no coats but still long sleeved top weather. Definitely not strappy top and sandals weather by a long shot.

Why get so aerated? No one is having a major go at you. Some people are just gently pointing out their point of view. Read, comment (or not) and move on.

Are we having a vote? Hmm (if we're counting, I have a long history of mental illness and it offends me) I was reading a thread earlier today where a black person was arguing that the N word was OK because they weren't offended by it - do we really want to go down that road?

I am so fucking sick of that Stephen Fry quote being wheeled out to defend people's ignorant use of hurtful and stigmatising language. He may be gay and he may have a mental illness but he's hardly lacking in privilege in the scheme of things. That quote is just a wanky modern day equivalent of 'sticks and stones ...' - it's just as facile and bullshit now as it was in the playground.

OP, I'm sure you didn't mean it in a horrible way and there have been times when I have inadvertently upset others with my choice of words. If it's pointed out to me that what I'm saying could upset people who are disadvantaged or vulnerable in some way I would want to remedy that though - why wouldn't you?
