to think that if you are a dentist you shouldn't have dreadlocks?!

Really lovely woman, very professional in all other ways but I just kept thinking about how dirty her hair must be and what might be falling out of it as she leant over my face!

Am I turning into a moaning old biddy or do you agree?

Oh dear,if I were her I'd be more worried about having you and your narrow thoughts in my chair.
My fiancé is a nurse, he had dreadlocks for a number of years without complaint.

BuggersMuddle · 07/03/2014 19:16

Don't see the issue. The only people I've known with dirty dreads were erm, dirty people. Trust me their dirty hair was the least of the problem...downwind of their armpit smell moreso.

I do think you should maybe get this deleted though as while I doubt you mean it (and I'm assuming your dentist probably white), it could be seen as culturally insensitive at the least.

NurseyWursey · 07/03/2014 19:20

I really hate how in this day and age people are still being judge by their choices in hair style, tattoos etc. As long as they're clean who cares.

mrspremise · 07/03/2014 19:32

ODFOD Hmm . And while you are, have a Biscuit .

EirikurNoromaour · 07/03/2014 19:33

What an odd point of view!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 07/03/2014 19:46

Provided her hair was pulled back away from her face and secured so it didn't get in the way, then what's the trouble?

There's more risk from a beard, I've seen people with food trapped in beards yuk

hiddenhome · 07/03/2014 19:49

My dentist is large of nork and they squash my face when I'm having treatment Confused

I think we just have to accept that these things are just part of a visit to the dentist. I'm sure your dentist has clean dreads because you can get proper cleaning stuff for them these days.

NewtRipley · 07/03/2014 19:50

Oh give over

NewtRipley · 07/03/2014 19:51

Ooops! I see you have already given over

KirjavaTheCat · 07/03/2014 19:53

Hmm dreads aren't inherently dirty. It's wise to educate yourself before starting a thread about something about which you have no idea.

GreenLandsOfHome · 07/03/2014 19:53

Unless they weren't secured so were dangling in your mouth when they leant over you, yabu.

If they WERE dangling in your mouth then yadnbu and the manky buggers should tie it back.

x2boys · 07/03/2014 19:53

i'm really shocked that anyone could object to dreadlocks.

KirjavaTheCat · 07/03/2014 20:02

Do you mean your friend doesn't use shampoo 2boys? Because the two are different things. I haven't used shampoo in a year and my hair is a sexy mane of sexiness.

hoobypickypicky · 07/03/2014 20:04

"you are in danger of being seen as c racist I would get ugh, thread deleted."

What?! Where does the OP mention the dentist's race? Do we know if the dentist is black, white or orange?
WRT Rastafari, it's a religion, not a race anyway!

x2boys · 07/03/2014 20:06

apparently so she is more of a friend of my sisters her hair always looks greasy so what do you do with your hair kirjava not sure wether she rinses it or not she never shave her legs either.

I personally don't like dreadlocks and would probably feel the same as you, grem.

gremlindolphin · 07/03/2014 20:10

Hey calm down people! I was merely asking about the hygiene of dreads for which you have educated me. It was a genuine question and previously I have known people who didn't wash them but it seems that they were in the minority.

Not going to defend myself anymore on the subject! xx

KirjavaTheCat · 07/03/2014 20:10

I use natural rinses. My hair's lovely now, used to be the texture of straw. Google 'no-poo method'.

My son's hair's never been washed with shampoo and he's got a lovely head of defined curls, which smell lovely...

HerGraciousMajTheBeardedPotato · 07/03/2014 20:10

Just because you all seem to know about dreads, doesn't mean that the OP IBU or is racist.

The only people I have ever known with dreads - two people whom I knew very well - had horribly smelly dreads. Not only that, but a dread would fall out from time to time. They had a row of shed dreads pinned to the wall!

So I would have been just as dubious as the OP about a dentist with dreads.

We are now re-educated.

RevoltingPeasant · 07/03/2014 20:11

OP I think YABU, a lot, and I do agree with others that you risk (risk!) being seen as discriminatory towards black people.

However I disagree with the poster who said you should learn about stuff before posting a thread. Everyone has said ignorant shit on here and MN is a great teacher.

OP if you think differently now, good on you for being big enough to admit it.

NearTheWindymill · 07/03/2014 20:14

Hiddenhome you made me laugh. DH loves going to see the hygienist for that very reason. Tells me every time how lovely it was see his lovely with the ample bosom. Grin

Wuxiapian · 07/03/2014 20:15

Is it only black people with dreadlocks, then, Revolting?!
