To really want to say something to these abortion protestors?

Crocodileclip · 07/03/2014 18:10

Firstly, I know I will probably never say anything as I appreciate that the protestors have the right to protest but it really pisses me off.

A small group of people have been protesting outside the Marie Stoppes clinic in Belfast since it opened in 2012. They stand outside the door on the days it is open holding anti abortion posters and trying to gather signatures for a petition. I pass them on my way to get to the station at home time and every time it annoys me. I can't imagine how offputting they would be if you were young and scared and just wanting some advice. Lots of pics of aborted foetuses etc. I find it intimidating enough myself and I am just walking past. I actually put my head down and walk quicker so that nobody asks me to sign the petition.

I'm currently pregnant with my second and am lucky never to have been in a position where abortion was an option but am of the opinion that there are situations in which it may be the best option available.

The clinic itself operates within NI law so only offers abortions up to 9 weeks and as far as I know is the only such clinic in Northern Ireland. I think I would be ok with the protestors doing their stuff elsewhere in the city centre it is the fact that it is just outside the only entrance to the clinc that makes me irrationally angry. Does this happen at other Marie Stoppes clinics elsewhere in the UK?

The foetus isn't being punished - that's very emotive language with no basis.

bumbleymummy · 08/03/2014 19:47

I only used 'punished' because we are making comparisons between committing crimes and receiving the death penalty...

anothernumberone · 08/03/2014 19:47

Yes for the longest time that is what Catholics believed and when that became too socially unpalatable then lucky for us god changed his mind and decided that actually unbaptised babies could be buried in hallowed ground and could enter heaven. Who would have thought that after a millennium and 900 years god could just change his mind like that? Bumbley I invite you to come and meet some of these people on college green in Dublin some saturday and see how your defence of them holds up then. These are truly vile people.

BackOnlyBriefly · 08/03/2014 19:51

Are any Pro-life protesters atheists? I just wonder if it's possible to come to the conclusions they do without it being based on what god wants.

bumbleymummy · 08/03/2014 19:51

another, I know a few of them already and the ones I know aren't vile at all. Agree with you about "God changing his mind" though.

basgetti · 08/03/2014 19:58

Anyone who is willing to harass and intimidate vulnerable women, with no clue about their circumstances, and who prioritises an unborn foetus over the existing autonomous individual carrying it, is in fact vile.

bumbleymummy · 08/03/2014 19:59

You are entitled to your opinion. I am entitled to disagree with you.

anothernumberone · 08/03/2014 20:07

Bumbley if they hang out outside abortion clinics waving placards at vulnerable women going into a clinic then they are vile. If they are pro life people who view abortion as something that is repugnant to their moral code then they are not, we are all entitled to our opinion on that too.

SauceForTheGander · 08/03/2014 20:08

bumbley do you know people who actually stand outside clinics with banners and shout at women going for abortions?

bumbleymummy · 08/03/2014 20:12

No, I know women who protest but they don't shout abuse at women.

SauceForTheGander · 08/03/2014 20:13

Do they protest at clinics?

bumbleymummy · 08/03/2014 20:18

I'm not sure exactly where they protest - I know they go to different places. They probably protest outside clinics sometimes.

bishbashboosh · 08/03/2014 20:28

No you are not be if u reasonable Hmm

MadAsFish · 08/03/2014 20:38

They probably protest outside clinics sometimes.

Then they are vile.

bumbleymummy · 08/03/2014 20:41

You're entitled to your opinion.

HadABadDay2014 · 08/03/2014 20:45

Ok then abortion is wrong and it's killing babies, so why not come up with a way to take the featus from the womb to grow else where.

Develop a machine that mimics the womb.

That way a women isn't forced to continue the pregnancy but still preserving life.

SauceForTheGander · 08/03/2014 20:45

No decent minded person protests outside clinics.

Just interfering control freaks who for some reason think they can humiliate, shame, intimidate and judge women who are making a legal decision to have an abortion.

It's a really nasty way to spend your free time.

bumbleymummy · 08/03/2014 20:49

HadABadDay - that's probably not too far fetched an idea anymore!

Dawndonnaagain · 08/03/2014 20:52

How would these people feel if the rest of us went and protested outside their church?
Anyone who protests outside a clinic and allows vulnerable girls and women to run the gamut of their protest is unbelievably rude, selfish and abominably thick regarding emotional wellbeing. Keep your views to yourself.

www.theguardian.com/world/2002/feb/10/medicalscience.research

Pro lifers would most likely say it unethical though.

MoominIsWaitingToMeetHerMiniMe · 08/03/2014 20:56

HadABadDay

Yep, they'd say it's unethical because it deprives them of the right to feel like they have control over the bodies of other human beings.

bumbleymummy · 08/03/2014 20:57

Why are they all vulnerable?

Dawndonnaagain · 08/03/2014 20:59

Why aren't they?

gordyslovesheep · 08/03/2014 21:02

these people are vile - I worked with Rape Crisis some years back - I used to take women to our BPAS for medical advice, testing and support - and I often had to run the gauntlet of these idiot - I have been spat on, called a murderer, called Hitler, told I would rot in hell, hit with placards and physically hurt

they have no right to do that - non at all.
