To think that beauticians should not be employed if they are smokers?

Im a regular customer in the beauty salons.

However wherever i go, beauticians always seem to be smokers.

This results in me smelling really strong stale cigarettes on fingers when im having a facial or eyebrow wax etc.

Even if they wash their hands, smoke smell still remains under their finger nails etc.

Aibu to think that as beauticians touch peoples skin then they should not be employed if they are a smoker?

if people realised they smelt they would give up.

Unfortunately I really don't think that's true. After all, they're told often enough.

WilsonFrickett · 07/03/2014 16:43

I've changed hairdressers for this very reason. Cannot bear faggy fingers in my face. Op, why don't you take your custome elsewhere?

honeybunny14 · 07/03/2014 16:43

Yabu.

whiteblossom · 07/03/2014 16:47

yanbu, I can't bare to be in the same room as my own mother for this very reason. The smell makes me heave.

fatedtopretend · 07/03/2014 16:52

Only if you can also request that people who eat certain foods/do certain diets/clean a lot/swim are also not employed.

Ketosis from Atkins/dukan makes you absolutely stink, garlic/spices etc make you smell different, bleach smells, chlorine smells....

Basically you are asking that everyone smells the way you want them to.

YABU

As en ex smoker you really dont realise how bad you smell. You can smell it occasionally on your fingers right after having a fag, but you just dont smell the constant ashtray smell that I now am aware of.

CeliaFate · 07/03/2014 16:57

"Basically you are asking that everyone smells the way you want them to."
That's a huge leap! All the OP is asking is that the person who is touching her face doesn't smell of cigarette smoke.
YANBU.

Lavenderhoney · 07/03/2014 16:58

I just ask that whoever is doing it isn't a smoker because of the smell.

If they are all smokers if find somewhere else or put up with it.

RiverTam · 07/03/2014 17:01

I would get in touch with the salon manager and say that you're taking your custom elsewhere because of it. I agree that in a profession like this it's pretty grim.

brighteyedbusytailed · 07/03/2014 17:02

What about people who just have smelly breath/poor oral hygiene?
against someone who chews a lot of gum etc where do you draw the line?

But brighteyed the op isn't speaking about the beauticians breathe smelling of smoke, she is on about their fingers smelling of smoke.

squoosh · 07/03/2014 17:13

I want my beauticians to smell of marshmallows and unicorn tears.

No smoke, no garlic, no halitosis.

fatedtopretend · 07/03/2014 17:16

Celia, the op has something against the way someone smells, surely if someone posted "AIBU to ask my beautician to not eat curry" people would post that it is a personal choice for the beautician?! Both affect the way your hands smell. It is a personal preference as to whether you find that smell offensive or not.

harriet247 · 07/03/2014 17:16

Yanbu and im a beatician :) my previous employer, a luxury spa had it written into our contracts rhat we coyldnt smoke or eat offensive food during working hours. It is the standard in the good places.

squoosh · 07/03/2014 17:18

I suspected that would be the case harriet.

Trinpy · 07/03/2014 17:18

Yanbu. I trained as a beauty therapist several years ago (but have never worked as one) and part of the course was about looking professional, including not coming to work stinking of smoke/strong perfume/bo.

I don't think you could just not employ smokers though.

Sativa · 07/03/2014 17:23

Is there anyone out there who actually likes the smell of a smoker ? Or who couldn't care either way ?

Personally I detest it and think YANBU !

fatedtopretend · 07/03/2014 17:34

Sativa, I actually know quite a few people who like the smell of a smoker!

RedFocus · 07/03/2014 17:51

Bleugh...smokey breathe in my face while they wax my eyebrows is disgusting so I just changed beauticians! Grin

pinkhorse · 07/03/2014 19:24

I had my hair done at a local college last week and the hairdresser stunk of cigarettes! I kept thinking the smell would be in my hair when i left. It's not good.

Nyancat · 07/03/2014 19:35

another who.trained as a therapist years ago, we were told no smoking or strong smelling foods during working hours.

fatedtoptetend - really ? I just can't imagine it but if they're happy I suppose......

MostlyMama · 09/03/2014 13:27

One time I had an appointment at the orthodontist, he took seemingly great delight in telling me he had just had a mackerel sandwich for his lunch prior to my appt. I was very nearly sick. :(
