AIBU?

To think the British youth of today is a bit lazy??

Disclaimer: sweeping generalisation so obviously not true for all. Also, basing a lot of this on my friends and what they do.

I work in the office of a factory where I regularly go down to the factory floor. We have approx 95% Eastern European workers. They work shockingly hard and some of them are my friends who I love. There's a slight issue of communication but we have translators so not a problem.

We rarely get British people through our agency and when we do I always think 'brilliant, they'll be easy to tell what's what' rather than guessing, doing strange hand gestures, calling another person off their shift or google translate.

The problem is, they're no where near as nice as our current workers (the last pair felt the need to tell me they thought my DP was my son when he pulled up one day) and they work at snails pace. And run off screaming 'yay break time' at break. They also stand back doing nothing while regulars set up the shift. Though that may be a communication issue as the regulars aren't telling them what to grab from where as they can't. Basically, they are never called back.

Looking at my Polish friends, not one is unemployed or lazy. My English friends... They either work in some fancy role and work hard or Most popped a baby out not long after school and saw it as a means of staying at home. They feel they are entitled to benefits. They talk a good talk about wanting to work but when I ask how many jobs they've applied for I get excuse after excuse.

It's all very well saying British jobs for British people but I feel like younger people don't push themselves.

For the record I'm 26

Do we have less drive than our Eastern European counterparts???

At home English and polish are the same I mean. Everyone wants to do their home life well!

Mind you, I have never understood the attraction of doing nothing.

Don't you? What, never? How different we all are.

I hate comments like the OP has come out with.

My 17 year old brother has been trying to get jobs left right and centre but can't as he's under 18. So now he's working cash in hand from 6 o clock in the morning, just so he can help give money to our disabled mum. His friend's are in similar positions, all desperate for jobs.

Limited edition, I'm not simply saying 'you are British, you are lazy' I'm saying we don't work as hard as polish or other immigrants as a rule. Some of one will be the opposite as will some of the other. Grin

We all have aspirations and I'm sure we all meet them to a degree. I will eventually Shock

Some people have been quite bitchy on this thread. I love that the anonymity of mumsnet let's peoples true colours come out. It's like the waitress test.

I never said one group of people should be above or below another. I myself said it was a sweeping generalisation.

Even socially, polish people are welcoming and friendly
Grin if you believe that you will believe anything....

It's ridiculously naive to state 'even socially, polish people are welcoming and friendly'. It's like saying 'even socially, british people are obnoxious and leery'.

You're seeing such a very small fraction of them, in a professional environment.

I'm not anti-polish btw, I just abhor this attitude that to me seems like 'oo look at how terribly modern and pc I am, I simply love the minorities'. They're just like us Brits, some nobs some lovely people.

exactly nurseywursey, all these generalisations by nationality are so silly.
some people are lazy, some are not.
some are dicks, some are not...
etc etc

I have polish family and many polish friends so it's hardly a work only context.

I'm not anti British but I do think we could do with being a bit more friendly

so do you understand the language then?
you know what they mean when they say 'czarny' or 'nie ladnie' or 'maupa' and laugh right?
yes yes so very welcoming and friendly

You lost me at agency staff.

If you want motivated, committed staff, advertise permanent jobs with a hope of job security.

People looking for work will accept practically any permanent work over agency, where they can be laid off at will.

Eveesmummy,ive been bitchy
There are friendly and unfriendly people wherever people come from.and who they are.People are people.Kind of thing that starts hate that.Unless you know every single polish person and english person as of now you cant say what any person is like. Its verging on ridiculous.

LimitedEditionLady · 07/03/2014 20:10

Apparently you need to be an opposite skin colour to be racist?

Limited, I'll say again it's from my experience and it's a sweeping generalisation.

I've not heard maupa before. Maybe you're not very nice
