Women slapping men on TV

I have just watched last night's Casualty and there was a scene where a male member of staff got slapped very hard around his face by a woman because he lied to her. The storyline/scene was written to be seen as something humorous and the other actors in the scene laughed when it happened and the whole thing was staged to be something funny and something to giggle about.

AIBU to feel a bit put out by it?

I have never understood why showing women being violent towards men is absolutely fine and considered amusing. If the clip was reversed and a woman got slapped round the face by a male I doubt everyone in the scene would be laughing and would instead be calling the police!! It just surprises me that even in this modern day it is still being classed as funny and acceptable for women to hit men and it be something that women are 'allowed' do just because we are socially seen as the 'weaker sex'.

It's the same when a soap character finds out her DH/DP did something unforgiveable, she starts screaming at him, slapping him, pummelling his chest, throwing things at him etc and it is seen as understandable and acceptable and I doubt many viewers bat an eyelid. But reverse the genders and we'd be horrified!!!

I just don't get it.

Men being violent towards women is horrific but surely it should work both ways? An old friend of mine was physically abused by his girlfriend, he used to turn up covered in bruises and scratches from her latest attack. It was awful. He put up with it for well over a year, probably because he was too embarrassed to admit it was going on.

... Hence the ""

Women have always slapped people in soaps.

Alexis colby was at it all the time in the 80s.

I don't think it's a "new" thing as revenge for sexism on TV in the past?!!!!

There are a few films where female on male rape is portrayed as something amusing. e.g. The Wedding Crashers, 40 Days and 40 Nights, Horrible Bosses. Could you imagine the outrage if the genders had been reversed in those situations? But no, apparently a guy getting raped is funny.

I agree with you. I saw it and I thought. geez. I hadn't seen what lead up to it so all I saw was an isolated slap, no idea what he'd done to 'deserve' it but even so, lots of cave men will watch that, forget it's fiction, and think, these birds, they want equality but if it's ok for them to slap us then they can't expect to play up and not get a slap.

liz - basically he'd met that woman on a night out and told her he was a Doctor (even though he's a porter) as he didn't think she'd be interested otherwise as he was under the impression she was also a doctor. They ended up spending the night together then she found out he had lied - but it turned out she had lied to him about being a doctor too and she actually worked in the hospital kitchens.

I was watching TOWIE last night and there was a scene of women and one of them was saying she'd heard rumours her partner had cheated and she basically said that if turned out to be true she'd really hurt him, said she'd kill him, and then another character who was doing the ironing held up the iron and said, "Do you want to borrow this?" clearly implying the woman could go and hit her partner with it. Again, everyone was laughing.

Some of it was said light heartedly but I can't help but wonder if the gender roles were reversed and it was a group of men would it still be seen as funny to hear a guy threaten to hurt/kill his girlfriend and attack her with an iron?

and I totally agree with you whatsthatcoming regarding male rape!! I don't know if you have ever watched The Inbetweeners but there is one episode where one of the characters is going on about a man being raped by 28 men when he got his head stuck in a bottle bank and completely taking the piss/mocking the concept of male rape. There is absolutely NO WAY the writers would ever create such a scene where people were laughing about a woman being raped 28 times.....

It's hideous and a trope which needs to die.

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 03/03/2014 18:51

I hate it as well. The "humour" relies on us knowing that women are weaker than men and can't really hurt them, or really affect them at all, as well as the emotional children thing mentioned earlier. It's shit on numerous levels. Quite clever in a way, how it belittles women AND normalises violence against men at the same time

LRDtheFeministDragon · 03/03/2014 18:54

YANBU. A pet hate of mine too, really nasty.

WelliesandPyjamas · 03/03/2014 18:59

YA Definitely NBU!
This is one of my bugbears with television: the double standards and the misguided thought that it is funny to hurt/assault someone because they are male. Guaranteed to get me changing channel in a flash!

ElephantsandMiasmas, exactly.
