To ask if you always pick up after your dog?

I was just out walking with my toddler. We were in a big park which contains a playground. It's popular with dog walkers and parents with young children. There are dog poo bins and signs up everywhere saying that you get a £100 fine for not picking up after your dog.

A couple of middle-aged, respectable looking women paused up ahead while their dog shat next to the path. They saw that their dog was pooing but when it finished they carried on walking. I shouted, 'aren't you going to pick that up' to which they looked at me like I was insane, ignored me and carried on walking.

IANBU here am I? Leaving your dog's poo in a park close to a playground where young children can easily step in it is unacceptable and disgusting isn't it? I'm not a dog owner so am I not understanding something?

True Grennie but at least most of it is gone.

Norfolknway · 01/03/2014 18:07

Yeah, she was totally wrong.

I was just wondering about the logistics. Triple bagging dog diarrhoea - one of the reasons I don't have a dog. Yak!

She had a toddler, toddling too. I wonder how she would have felt if she'd trodden in it

I hope she felt the wrath of my 'look'

TheGruffalo2 · 01/03/2014 18:07

Yes. I can guarantee that I have NEVER left a poo pile unpicked when out. Once I saw one of mine squatting in the distance when off-lead in a big park and it took me nearly half an hour to find and "pick" it!

TheGruffalo2 · 01/03/2014 18:08

I have kitchen roll in my walk bag for messier poo and wet wipes for me afterwards!

Goldmandra · 01/03/2014 18:08

I have done that with diarrhea. You get a lot of it off, but you won't get all of it.

Exactly and the more you can remove, the more easily the rest will be removed by the next rain shower.

Awitchwithoutchips · 01/03/2014 18:11

Always did when she did a rare poo out, she only liked pooing in her own garden. Fussy mare! It makes me so cross that people don't pick up, pure laziness. I am forever swerving the dc out of the way.

coffeeinbed · 01/03/2014 18:15

Always.
If it's runny I always take paper towels.
And I carry extra baggies.

HarderToKidnap · 01/03/2014 18:35

Three times I haven't.

Once, in the sheeting rain, dog decided to go half way down an extremely steep bank which lead to a pond and do it there. Place was a mudslide and I was 9 months pregnant.

Once, had row with my mum when staying at her house, stormed out with the dog without thinking and he pooed when we got a bit down the road. Looked in someone's bin for something to pick it up but no joy. Feel terrible about that one as it was right in the middle of the pavement.

Third time, proper runny water poo right at the junction of someone's drive and the pavement. We were only walking from the vets to the car which was about ten steps away and I wasn't prepared. Fished some newspaper out of a public bin but there was only so much I could do. It was running towards their front step and I legged it. Also feel terrible about that one. When I got home I realised I had some baby wipes in the car so could have done more.

Otherwise, always pick up. And dog is 11 and has been on roughly 6000 walks.

Have been aggressively stopped several times though with a shouted "Are you to going to PICK THAT UP!!!!" When poo was still hanging out of bum. I must have a lax look about me.

nostress · 01/03/2014 18:43

Always always pick it up. I have two dogs and take 8 bags minimum on walks because once i needed 7 bags. They usually have two each in the morning...

Sparklysilversequins · 01/03/2014 18:50

Yes I do but ex used to take bags with him but only clear up if someone saw Hmm, not only that, he would often pretend to bend down and pick it up but not actually do it Confused. My thoughts on this (besides lazy, selfish fuckwit) were that he was expending the same amount of energy and time pretending to pick it up. Why not just do it? It makes no sense whatsoever.

echt · 01/03/2014 18:56

I always pick up after my dog. In my bit of Melbourne you can be fined on spot for not having several bags on your person when walking a dog. They also make it easy for people to be compliant by having rolls of poo bags next to off- leash areas.

TheGreatHunt · 01/03/2014 19:00

This is the main reason why I wouldn't own a dog. I'm not prepared to pick up its shit.

If I let my child shit everywhere and leave it I'm sure I'd be an outcast. Same should apply to dog owners.

Goldencity1 · 01/03/2014 19:12

I always pick up after my 2 goodies, all my coats and handbags are stuffed with poo bags, I carry tissues and have anti bag hand wash in both bag and car. What really annoys me is when people pick up the poo then just chuck the bag into the trees/leave it at the side of the path.
When the pup had the trots.....about 6 bags and half a roll of tp....yuk.

If you can't pick up the poo, don't get the dog!

Cakeismymaster · 01/03/2014 19:28

I always always always pick up my dogs poo, I will take a minimum of 4 bags with me and she only ever does one poo per walk. I am increasingly anti dog even though I own a dog!

Thank you, all dog owners who pick up! Loads of people round here don't bother, I'm sick to death of avoiding dogshit. We moved to a cul de sac with a little meadow at the end when DD was a toddler. Oh lovely, I thought, it doesn't matter so much that the house hasn't got a lawn, I can take her out there every day to play. Fucking thing was always humming with abandoned turds, there was no way I could just let her wander about on it without breathing down her neck to make sure she didn't roll in one. It's so unpleasant.

HotBurrito1 · 01/03/2014 20:15

My dog produces around 5 turds per walk so we're always well stocked with poo bags. I have to say, a lot of older men we encounter seem to 'not see' fido taking a massive dump.

MimsyBorogroves · 01/03/2014 20:28

I always do, and hate it when people don't. I take DDog on the school run with me and the lane leading to the school is like dog shit alley. I always get people glaring at me pointedly and saying "we nearly stood in dog poo on the way here". I am tempted to keep bagged poo in my pocket to wave at them.

One time - and I am honestly not lying here - one of our dogs pooed outside a house next to a wall with 4 "NO FOULING" signs affixed to it. I picked it up and heard a hammering on a window - looked up and saw a woman hanging her head out of the window. She yelled "you stay right there!"...so I did.

She came thundering downstairs, opened her door and thrust a bucket of disinfectanty water and a brush at me and told me to "clean it up now". I pointed out the bag of poo - but that wasn't good enough.

Never walked that way again Shock

whatwoulddexterdo · 01/03/2014 20:54

Without question I pick up every single time. Today it took 4 bags as very loose sorry if tmi. I was panicking as i only had one bag left.
There is so much muck around here and my dog likes to try and eat I or at worst walk through it.
I dont understand the people who pick up and then leave the bag on the roadside.

whomadeyougod · 01/03/2014 21:06

i dont pick up in our woods , there are signs saying to kick it in the hedgerow .

izzydazzling · 01/03/2014 21:08

there's always those folk who pick it up and then fling in a bush or a tree - decorated like a shit Christmas tree. Angry

Abra1d · 01/03/2014 21:17

Not in the middle of a remote field where nobody could step in it. Not a mile out of the village on a remote lane, in the middle of the road. In our village itself, always. I am responsible for the playground and sometimes have to pick up after other people's dogs.

Round here the not always adhered-to rule is if it is where someone is likely to walk, or in the village, pick up. In the fields, flick into the brambles: no point in putting in a plastic bag in landfill when worms, hedgehogs, crows, etc, will eventually dispose of the poo.

Most people understand the distinction but other people, usually older, we find, are more lax. Often it is the better off residents who do not pick up where they should.

gilliangoof · 01/03/2014 21:37

I always always always pick up. It really annoys me when I walk through someone else's dog's mess. Just one lazy selfish owner can make a real mess of a neighbour with 2 walks a day over the course of a week or two. So it can look like loads of people so it when I doubt they do.

gilliangoof · 01/03/2014 21:39

I meant - make a real mess of a neighbourhood.

LottieJenkins · 01/03/2014 21:48

I actually slipped and fell in some dog poo two years ago. It was DISGUSTING!!!
I stepped on to a bank while walking my dog to let a vehicle past and went whooooooooops! All over my jeans coat and shoes!
