AIBU?

to think this is NOT an unhealthy lunch

DStS's teacher (he is in Junior school) pulled me aside after school to say his lunch was deemed 'an unhealthy lunch' and their first step was to give me a 'verbal warning' before writing to me. She even said 'I'm sure you can understand why we think this.'

This is what he had -

  • Small pot of home made hummus
  • Large wholemeal pitta cut into strips
  • A hardboiled egg
  • A handful of celery sticks
  • A handful of carrot sticks
  • A small pot of raisins
  • Matchbox sized lump of chedder (which he saved to eat on the way home)
  • Satusuma
  • Small yoghurt

We've given him sandwiches and he never touches them but dippy types of food are always eaten and he reports how much he enjoys them. He isn't messy, almost to a fault, so I can't see them being bothered about a 'bits and bobs' lunch making a mess.

Is this unhealthy? I am racking my mind to figure out how on earth this is unhealthy? She wouldn't specify, I expect because it wasn't her who saw his lunch but rather it was reported back via lunch time staff.
I feel really annoyed to be told off by the teacher, she was pretty sneery and it wasn't until I got home I realised I should have asked to speak to the head.

identical to the lunch I give my DS and I actually got complimented by his key worker on what 'lovely' lunches I give him. they must have confused him with someone else or he picked up and ate the wrong lunch box.

bonsoir egg is protein.

Sounds bonkers to me. I am looking forward to your update once you have spoken to the school.

I somewhat agree with:

ask to see their qualifications as a dietician to be able to be conducting this punishment. TBH a note to the head teacher and copy in governors asking to see all relevant qualifications and guide lines for this rule and punishment

Write to the head and copy the governors with a list of what was in the lunch box, and ask what they'd rather you send. I always struggled with lunch boxes, found it very difficult to make up appetising cold meals every morning. Your lunch box sounds great if your child likes those foods.

What happens after the verbal warning Confused.

It's a fine lunch and there's plenty of protein too.

Children need fat. The problem with a shop bought hummus wouldn't be fat and calories but it could be high in salt.

Sounds a lovely lunch to me.

Lucky boy

I would have to speak to school - find out why they think it is unsuitable.

Also - as LittleBear says - what happens after a verbal warning??

Goodness Bonsoir, how much protein do you think a child needs that eggs, dairy products and chickpeas doesn't provide!

I'm pretty sure she just muddled you with someone else. It happens. Why did you not ask for clarification at the time?

Well if you've given a pork pie in the past maybe she was referring to a previous lunch ?

While it's important to balance your diet overall it is crucial to eat enough protein at lunch and dinner.

LOL. You've got to wonder.

I had a friend turn up to rugby practice with radish. I was clutching my Starbucks cinnamon swirl in utter embarrassment.

WTAF is unhealthy about that?! Confused They're off their head. I'd be going back in tomorrow and say sorry you had to rush off yesterday, but you've got more time this morning and you want it clarifying exactly which part of the lunch they had a problem with as for the life of you you're baffled! Confused

You've got:

  • wholemeal pitta bread (carbohydrates/fibre)

- cheese (calcium)
- chickpeas and eggs (protein)
- raisins/satsuma (fruit)
- celery (veg)

You've got all 5 food groups covered there. You're either on the wind up, the school have got you mixed up with someone else, or the school are stark, staring BONKERS.
Confused
