AIBU?

to think this is NOT an unhealthy lunch

DStS's teacher (he is in Junior school) pulled me aside after school to say his lunch was deemed 'an unhealthy lunch' and their first step was to give me a 'verbal warning' before writing to me. She even said 'I'm sure you can understand why we think this.'

This is what he had -

  • Small pot of home made hummus
  • Large wholemeal pitta cut into strips
  • A hardboiled egg
  • A handful of celery sticks
  • A handful of carrot sticks
  • A small pot of raisins
  • Matchbox sized lump of chedder (which he saved to eat on the way home)
  • Satusuma
  • Small yoghurt

We've given him sandwiches and he never touches them but dippy types of food are always eaten and he reports how much he enjoys them. He isn't messy, almost to a fault, so I can't see them being bothered about a 'bits and bobs' lunch making a mess.

Is this unhealthy? I am racking my mind to figure out how on earth this is unhealthy? She wouldn't specify, I expect because it wasn't her who saw his lunch but rather it was reported back via lunch time staff.
I feel really annoyed to be told off by the teacher, she was pretty sneery and it wasn't until I got home I realised I should have asked to speak to the head.

Of course it's not unhealthy - as other posters have pointed out, it's hard to see how it could be much healthier.

What I don't get - apologies if others have already said this - is how this issue wasn't thrashed out at the time when the teacher spoke to you. I can understand you were probably taken aback; but I can't imagine how you can have come away from this encounter without:

a) having a clear idea of what her objections were

& b) having responded to said objections & made it very clear that, as far as you're concerned, she was talking nonsense.

Did you really stand there meekly while she told you she was giving you a verbal warning? What does that even mean? Does the school have a clear policy on packed lunches that she referred to? It all sounds very odd.

But yes, it's a great packed lunch.

If you don't buck up your ideas, will they be speaking to your parents?

Sorry but Grin at verbal warning.

I would go in guns blazing whether it was a mix up or not. It isnt their business what goes in a lunch box.

I remember as a governor the deputy head wanted to start checking lunch boxes and was firmly told that she would be getting a two word answer from the governors let alone the other parents!

LOL at verbal warning. My face would be like this Hmm if some random gave me a verbal warning over some hummus.

Op please come back tomorrow and tell us what the teacher says.

I didn't stand there meekly, although having read back maybe it does appear that way. I asked her to specify which parts were unhealthy as I was having a hard time trying to think what could be construed as such. She said she couldn't comment and at the time was ushering another mother through the door into the classroom (which is pretty unprof now I think of it too) and DC3 was asking for a wee and the other two were skidding on wet grass so I was harassed and I suppose keen to get a move on.
I agree I should have stood my ground a bit more and asked for a clarification.

Did he perhaps say 'too healthy'?
Or perhaps they think that you haven't wash the celery and it might contain mud??
If this is unhealthy then the world gone mad!

Please let us know what they say tomorrow.

Dollslikeyouandme I will be sure to come back tomorrow. I'm out to church this evening but thank you all for confirming I wasn't going bananas.

I would be tempted to do them a written warning. From me using key phrases like "this will stay on your file for 6 months", refer to the "policy" with a link to NHS healthy eating guidelines and state there is no right of appeal in the face of such gross nannying and inability to grasp basic principles of nutrition.

Not sure I'd have the guts to either put my name on it or send it but ooh, it would make me feel so much better!

I can't get passed the verbal warning, that's hilarious.

Do they name and shame in the newsletter too?

Thank the gods I have never had the misfortune to teach in one of these types of schools.

saying she couldn't comment is very odd in the circs, makes me even more sure she was incorrectly relaying a message if she did not even know what was in his lunch!

maybe the message was
"you know x in your class, his lunch was very, erm, "healthy" today -and she heard it as unhealthy because that's the usual message?!?

either that or you're pulling our legs

pepparami in pass the parcel??

Completely ridiculous.
Or have they mixed that dc up with your other dc who has jam sandwiches and a pepperami?!

Report
Nocomet · 24/02/2014 17:53

That is a 1000x healthier than any patched lunch DD2 would ever eat.

I bet it was the hummus, shop bought ones can have high levels of fat . I know your was homemade so I doubt it had 15g of fat.

This is still making me fume! A verbal warning? Then what happens, do you get a disciplinary? GAH! Who the actual fuck do they think they are?

OP you have to update tomorrow. A MNer's blood pressure depends on it!

This is a very good lunch, and I suspect you must know this.

I beg to differ with others and think that the lunch the OP provided was lacking in protein. But all she needed to do was add in some ham or something!

Report
Cat98 · 24/02/2014 18:06

Bonsoir - there's protein in hummous, yoghurt and cheese
