To ask how an independent Scotland would fund the ex Team GB athletes?

Bearbehind · 23/02/2014 15:50

I have no idea how sports funding works, hence the question, but watching the Winter Olympics has got me thinking. If Scotland votes for independence what would happen to, for example the Curling team, who are all Scottish?

In principle I'd have thought Team GB has access to more funding/ sponsorship etc as a bigger entity but could an independent Scotland provide the required support?

Andy Murray?
The same person who was in Dunblane primary school as a 8 year old, and had to deal with the trauma of the mass shooting of the reception class, and the fallout on the school and the town?
I'd probably still be hiding under the bed and whimpering at loud noises.

PigletJohn · 23/02/2014 17:44

Of course an independent country will have its own teams and sportspeople. They may sometimes want to train in other places, same as British skijumpers have to.

MothratheMighty · 23/02/2014 17:48

This is the possible liberation and rebirth of a country, and of course there are going to be cock ups and downsides and things that are going to be much harder.
But they deserve the right to try and deal with the big wide world and perhaps they will make a huge success of it, perhaps it will be a bit less than that. No independence and they'll never know if they could have done it.

MuttonCadet · 23/02/2014 17:50

It's going to be interesting, I assume that they'd no longer be part of Great Britian and therefore have to apply to be part of the Olypmics?

(disclaimer - I have no idea how this works)

Oh, and do we lose the blue from the Union Flag - does Scotland own that bit?

brokenhearted55a I was going to ask you to explain, but naaaah, can't be bothered feeding you

..and how said this has turned again into an Andy Murray bashing thread.

Truly pathetic

meditrina · 23/02/2014 17:56

Turned into an AM bashing thread ??

On the strength of one "keep him" post ??

Bearbehind · 23/02/2014 17:58

I didn't want this to be a Murray bashing thread, I genuinely want to know if things like this have even been considered and factored into the potential votes of the Scottish population.

He's not mine, I live in Sussex!
The fat, soft overindulgent south that benefits from all the good stuff and very little of the crap. Which is why I think Scottish voters have a point when they say government from Westminster and London rarely has their interests at heart. Or indeed, has a clue what they are.

AmIthatWintry · 23/02/2014 18:04

Sorry Med, come back in again. It was two - a miserable bastard and a miserable git.

Not very nice, but I'll say no more about it

MuttonCadet · 23/02/2014 18:05

I do think that the Scots have been badly treated by the British government over the years.

It seems like every dodgy idea is "tested" north of the border, I'm pissed off about that and I'm only from Yorkshire!

Bearbehind · 23/02/2014 18:11

Jeez, Andy Murray is not the purpose of this thread, I thought Tim Henman was a miserable git too!

If I lived in Scotland and had the vote, these things would interest me and I would want to know what plans were in place for the future and I started this thread to see if anyone knew.

I imagine the same or similar was as GB do currently.
GB will have to concentrate on its own athletes, we'll have a lot less medals without the Scots.

AmIthatWintry · 23/02/2014 18:17

It may be that the IOC don't let Scotland in? And it may also compromise GB's membership too, as it will have fundamentally changed.

In other sports, I don't imagine there would be much impact, as there are Scottish bodies for most sports, I believe, plus SportScotland

Cobain · 23/02/2014 18:30

Chris hoy would of been an interesting one as cycling has benefited by the unique training and expertise. Lottery funding which will like many other issues can only be resolved after the vote will also effect sports. It is very interesting I just hope that facilities will be able to be shared as sports people should not have to suffer.

mrsjay · 23/02/2014 18:39

after they are gone England can worry about themselves for a change instead of funding freebies for scotland

aye OKAY THEN

mrsjay · 23/02/2014 18:40

before i storm off Wink we have really a lot to worry about IF we get independence than the olympic games

BoneyBackJefferson · 23/02/2014 18:47

TBH, I'm more interested in whether we will be able to get rid of the Scottish born MPs that are running Westminster.

(nb. We will have enough dickhead politicians without keeping the Scottish lot.)

Bearbehind · 23/02/2014 18:49

I agree mrsjay but I do wonder how much these kind of things factor into the votes.

On another thread I was truly astounded by one poster who equated not have a clear idea of what currency would exist in iScotland with Scottish notes not being accepted in England. To him/her is was no different!

Sport is probably a bigger part of many peoples lives than politics are and it interests me to know what will happen.

The same way we fund free prescriptions, free tuition at uni, cheap bus fares, no council tax rises in years etc, with Mr Salmonds fairy dust! Don't get me wrong I am enjoying all this while it lasts, but god knows how we can afford it. I think no matter which way the vote goes things will change. P.S. I am a scot and live in Scotland but will vote with my head and not my heart.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 26/02/2014 17:20

Its not fairy dust. The Scottish Government is allocated money by the WM government (less money than comes from Scotland in the first place).

The Scottish Government then chooses to spend that in different ways than Westminster government.

If you want to vote with your head rather than your heart you need to educate yourself better. The Yes and Better Together websites would be a good starting point.

Oh yes, read all the propaganda created by one side of the argument. That will allow someone to come to a balanced, educated decision. Hmm

Megrim · 26/02/2014 17:27

Many Scottish athletes already train overseas for periods of time, funding may be through SportScotland, individual sports bodies, sponsorships and scholarships.

Scotland would need to form its own Olympic association, although whether this could be in place before Rio in 2016 is debatable. Scottish athletes will be given the choice of staying with Team GB or competing for a new Team Scotland.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 26/02/2014 17:27

The Yes and Better Together websites

Umm... that'll be both sides then Grin

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 26/02/2014 17:28

Sorry! Wink
