To think it wouldn't be too hard to tidy up a bit

I put this on another thread but thought it was so revolting it deserved its own thread.

How can anyone not be embarrassed to invite people in to photograph this, let alone think anyone will want to come and view it? Confused

It actually looks like quite a nice house apart from the mess. When we viewed our house it wasn't that bad, but it was very dirty and had abandoned towels etc on the bathroom floor. It turned out that the lady who owned it had collapsed after a stroke and had eventually been placed in a home.

I don't think many people who are serious about the house would be put off though. Most people nowadays can see past mess like that can't they?

We went to see a house in similar condition recently, a 'caretaker' was living on the top floor. When the estate agent had taken the photos everything was tidy so it was a bit of a shock to see it so 'lived in'. Our view was the 'caretaker' didn't want to have to move out & hence the mess. We didn't make an offer.

"Tidy up a bit" are you serious??

This is clearly not a normal run of the mill sale so, on that basis, YABU.

Tenants being evicted, death... There are many reasons.

There is probably a bargain to be had there. You do need to look beyond the god awful mess current owners possessions with any house purchase.

We viewed somewhere similar. The wife had left, the house was to be sold and proceeds split but the husband was going to make it as difficult and painful as possible for her. The bare bones of the house were wonderful and it had featured in an interiors magazine a few years before, but the husband allowed his teenage children to invite all their friends to live there and do their worst. It was bad. There was the remains of a small fire in the middle off the kitchen floor and piles of dirty laundry that had to be climbed over to get to any of the rooms. We could have got a bargain, but the EA told us that previous asking price offers had been backed out if after surveys so we decided it would be more trouble than it was worth.
