It's because Chris Fountain was sacked.

Obviously they had a storyline lined up for Tina leaving which involved him heavily. And the storyline was just about to start filming when he got sacked.

As a result they had to really quickly cobble together a new storyline.

It was obviously done in a rush and it shows, not properly thought through.

Although I don't care how old Peter is, I could do absolutely filthy things to him that would probably get me arrested in a number of countries.
