To cancel my gym membership?

serenshiningstar · 20/02/2014 22:55

I hardly ever go so this should not be an issue.

Except it means I will do NO exercise as opposed to the small amount I do now! Grin

Aibu to cancel!?

PS - one thing you can do with an exercise bike is position it in front of a telly and pop a good DVD in to watch. Blush The time flies by.

Google 23.5 hours.

Really puts it into perspective how easy it is to make a difference by very little changes, eg walking up the stairs, walking rather than taking car when possible, leaving bus one stop early, etc.
No actual ' exercise ' involved but just small lifestyle changes which would probably give you more benefit than a rarely used gym membership.

Save the money every month and put towards a ski holiday Grin

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 21/02/2014 16:03

Work out the cost of your gym membership over the year, then work out the cost per actual visit. That may help your decision when you realise it's costing you x amount per visit. You could probably afford a week skiing!

And although I am as guilty as the next runner in extolling the joys of it, I don't find it an especially cheap hobby anyway! Trainers, running clothes (different for winter and summer), fancy gps watch, race entry fees.....It can be as bottomless a pit as you want really.

I refuse to do yoga due to the inevitable bowel/ fanny farts! I have prolapse issues, it would not be prettyBlush

daisychain01 · 21/02/2014 17:29

Ive bailed out, I did suggest a dog (walking with a purpose) but it was ignored... Ah yes sorry OP probably does t like dogs

Sorry Ive been for a run and a swim in the time this thread has been bouncing along. Ive never let go of my bowels in yoga, but there have been a fair few ff's* doing downward facing dog

Last chance...how about skipping?

(Ducks for cover, runs off into the distance)

  • ff's = fanny farts
winterlace · 21/02/2014 17:40

I have re read this thread and actually I agree with the OP. It says very clearly 'aibu to cancel'.

Why are people getting so stroppy? She didn't say 'Aibu to think there must be an exercise I like doing'?

As a previous dog owner it actually annoys me when people blithely suggest it. I adore dogs but they are a LOT of time, effort and money and certainly not a sticking plaster over someone's gym membership. Maybe the OP feels she would feel the same apathy towards dog walking as she does now towards the gym (I hate the gym as well.) Dogs are great but should NEVER be bought on a whim.

Tiredemma · 21/02/2014 17:43

well its a bit of a no-brainer isnt it really??

I dont like exercise

I dont use my Gym membership enough

Im wasting money

Should I cancel?

Yes.

there you go.

Not even sure why its in AIBU? no one is ever going to suggest thats its entirely reasonable to continue wasting money for a Gym membership you rarely use when you done even really like exercise.

There is a WWYD? section - perhaps the OP would have had better responses there.

Confused
serenshiningstar · 21/02/2014 17:45

I did indeed ask if it was unreasonable to cancel, not to be hung drawn and quartered for my reticence towards physical activity!

Daisy actually I love dogs - which is why I will never own one. I live in a flat, I work full time, and I have 2 cats.

OP posts:
serenshiningstar · 21/02/2014 17:48

Tired, ah I've explained myself countless times but here we go:

My 'aibu' was regarding whether it was better to do some, but not much, exercise, than none at all - if this made the cost worthwhile.

As someone (nicely, cheerily, politely) said, no, it doesn't.

Sorted.

But hey - every post on AIBU is purely one about reasonableness or not, right? So yeah, mine stood out like a sore thumb amongst all the other totally relevant and serious issues, like cats yowling for food and dates with unattractive men and tweets from Ricky Wilson? (Not that I have anything against those, mind, I just don't understand why mine has been singled out?)

If it will stop the ongoing argument I will do press ups every day!

angeltulips · 21/02/2014 17:49

This is just an opportunity cost thing, op - do you need the money or not? If not, keep it (that's what I do, I don't use the gym enough to "justify" it but I like having it there when I do want it or my boiler has broken and I need a hot shower). But then I live comfortably enough that I don't find the monthly fee a big imposition.

Would agree with others that you need to wait to find your "exercise" inspiration. Not much point feeling guilty about something you're not going to do anyway. Just enjoy being as you are. The gym is pretty horrendous really.

Ps I can't run either - found out too late it was because I'm hypermobile. Definitely don't recommend c25k if this is you - it will kill you!

Pipbin · 21/02/2014 17:49

I'm with you.
I don't understand why some people get upset when other people don't exercise.

I canceled my gym membership ages ago as I hated going. I now run three days a week, but I hate that too. I just force myself to do it and have lots of radio 4 podcasts to listen to.

angeltulips · 21/02/2014 17:50

Ps I do think if you're a crap exerciser (like me) the mindset of "some is better than none" is helpful and you should hang onto it!

serenshiningstar · 21/02/2014 17:52

Yes, this is what I was wondering!

I've been trying to do some stuff but even walking yawn! is dependent on weather and dark and all that. The gym - ok is still deathly dull but is inside and warm and sometimes some really fit men do weights Grin Wink

Tiredemma · 21/02/2014 17:53

If it will stop the ongoing argument I will do press ups every day

You must do them one-handed though
Wink

serenshiningstar · 21/02/2014 17:54

Grin Emma - consider it done! Wink

OP posts:
angeltulips · 21/02/2014 17:55

Well if you can afford it then why not keep it up? (incidentally I often bribe myself to get to the gym by promising myself that I only have to go for 15 minutes - "some is better than none")

Jessica612 · 21/02/2014 18:10

Why not just do pay as you go? You don't need to have membership to go to the gym!
payasugym.com do one day passes...Wink

waterlego6064 · 21/02/2014 18:12

There was an AIBU very similar to this a few weeks ago.

OP, if you want to use the money for something else, then cancel the membership.

If you still want to exercise, then try a few other things until you find something you can bear to do.

If you don't want to exercise at all, then don't.

Some posters have mentioned weight loss. I don't think that's the main point of exercise, really. Simply put, it has a lot of health benefits, and if you raise your heart rate regularly, you're probably more likely to live longer, unless you're particularly unlucky. If people want to enjoy the potential health benefits, they need to do some exercise. If they're not bothered, then they can remain sedentary. It's simple really.

Haroldplaystheharmonica · 21/02/2014 18:16

Cancel it. Makes more room for those of us want to go! Wink

CooEeeEldridge · 21/02/2014 18:19

Why don't you give it 3 months and then see? Maybe go to the gym and tell them you're thinking of cancelling and see if they give you a cheaper package? If you're there less than once a week then cancel.

serenshiningstar · 21/02/2014 19:09

I think I will do that, thanks Grin

OP posts:
SidandAndyssextoy · 22/02/2014 11:08

Seren, I was thinking about you (while at the gym) and wondered whether you might not be better off getting a good pedometer and aiming for 10,000 steps a day? You've said you don't mind walking and actually, doing those steps every day would be a much healthier and cheaper alternative to occasional gym sessions.
