To cancel my gym membership?

serenshiningstar · 20/02/2014 22:55

I hardly ever go so this should not be an issue.

Except it means I will do NO exercise as opposed to the small amount I do now! Grin

Aibu to cancel!?

Seren, it seems that, unbidden, people on this thread are determined to regale you with their inspirational stories and persuade you that you can and should get into exercise!

serenshiningstar · 21/02/2014 13:47

I know I should do it.

But enjoying it while I do it is entirely another matter!

OP posts:
manicinsomniac · 21/02/2014 13:47

you're not very easy to help!

I'd say, based on how the thread has gone, YWBU to give up the membership because you don't want anything else. If you could do something else then I would give it up.

Has anybody suggested dance?

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 21/02/2014 13:48

At the moment you are wasting possibly considerable amounts of money.

People are giving cheaper, easily accessible alternative ideas if you want to exercise.

If you don't want to, then don't!

If you want to continue spending the money on the gym then do, I don't think anyone else is bothered either wayGrin

Now I'm off out in the sunshine for a run. You should come op, it'll be greatWink

Suzannewithaplan · 21/02/2014 13:49

Seren, to you want to be 'helped' into exercise?

serenshiningstar · 21/02/2014 13:50

NO! I ... hate ... it!

How about Zumba? Do they have classes at your gym? Six months ago I had an expensive wasted membership and was really unfit. I started off going to a Zumba class and an aqua aerobics. Now I do eight classes a week, see a personal trainer, and have just joined a second gym for a greater choice of classes. And I can run 5k on the treadmill. It takes a lack of social life though!

Innogen · 21/02/2014 13:55

Basically you don't want to exercise at all, but want to stay in shape.

And when people suggest easy alternatives, they all sounds unpleasant, or too much effort.

Seems like the advice you need is do nothing, and come to terms with the changes your body may endure for making that choice.

Suzannewithaplan · 21/02/2014 14:00

Basically you don't want to exercise at all, but want to stay in shape

I really don't think she said that or even alluded to anything remotely like that!

serenshiningstar · 21/02/2014 14:01

It isn't about things being unpleasant or too much effort!

I MAKE the effort occasionally and go to the gym. To be honest exercise has never made any difference to my body shape or size. If I want to lose weight I have to really cut down my food intake. Too much food and I gain weight, no matter how many star jumps I do.

But, in 2012 I became very ill - tonsillitis, which OK doesn't sound too terrible but it was nasty as my tonsils had to come out and I couldn't eat for weeks! So I actually lost too much weight so ate like a pig with abundance when I could without it killing me. I gained 2 stone on top of the weight I'd lost and weighed 12 stone. I've lost a stone and a half now but I'm still not massively fit.

I just don't know if the small amount of exercise I do is worth the gym membership but honestly all those saying 'oh just do this instead!' I know myself very well and I'd make loads of promises and never stick to any of them! Like I said, I'm just not really into exercise - including Zumba, sorry previous poster!

And I should have predicted people would go on a quest to suggest something I'll love but chances are I won't!

I don't mind walking for a purpose, to get to a bus stop, a supermarket, work - but just going for a walk for the sake of it, no thanks!

Running - not a chance!

Cycling - possibly, but it would be piddly little bike rides probably barely even worth mounting the bike.

Dancing - no. Really Grin

Classes - v self conscious and v bad at them. Not a great combination.

What I do love - skiing, but not dry slope skiing as it hurts when you do fall. So transport me to the top of a mountain with a load of snow and fine!

I'm not lazy - I walk miles but for a purpose, not 'to go for a walk.'

Innogen · 21/02/2014 14:07

So what do you want?

If you're not going to use it, cancel your gym membership and if you don't want to do any, don't do any exercise.

serenshiningstar · 21/02/2014 14:09

I've said what I wanted at least a dozen times! I was wondering whether the expense of the gym membership thus forcing me to do at least SOME exercise, although not enough to make it strictly worthwhile, is better than cancelling thus practically guaranteeing I shall do NO exercise!

OP posts:
Innogen · 21/02/2014 14:10

I don't think wasting money is worth it, no.

pootlebug · 21/02/2014 14:13

how often do you go at the moment, and what do you do when you're there?

SidandAndyssextoy · 21/02/2014 14:14

If it helps you make up your mind, you need to do around 30 minutes of exercise a day really. So if the gym means you do an hour every three weeks rather than none it makes no difference anyway. Grin

serenshiningstar · 21/02/2014 14:21

Thank you Sid

Looks like I'm cancelling then Blush

Something like yoga/pilates/Body Balance? It mostly looks like standing/sitting still, but definitely working your muscles. I stand at the back so fewer people see me fall over. Grin

serenshiningstar · 21/02/2014 15:03

My friend had an accident doing yoga (of the bowel type!) Put me off!

OP posts:
Innogen · 21/02/2014 15:04

Seren, you've got an excuse for why you won't do each activity.

You don't want to exercise do you? So don't.

Tiredemma · 21/02/2014 15:05

This is the most pointless AIBU I've ever read on here.

philomenascat · 21/02/2014 15:06

Bowel Yoga? I've been doing yoga since 1976. 'Never heard of Bowel Yoga.

Innogen · 21/02/2014 15:14

Philo, bowel yoga isn't a thing. She means her friend shit herself whilst doing yoga, and now she won't go.

I agree, tiredemma. I don't understand what seren wanted from this thread.

SidandAndyssextoy · 21/02/2014 15:15

Farted surely? I've known many yoga farters but none have ever followed through!

serenshiningstar · 21/02/2014 15:22

I've said what I wanted (and it has been answered!) a number of times but clearly exercise has prevented people from being able to read.

What you really mean is since I haven't said "oh you're right, I haven't thought of that, I will definitely be able to run MILES now!' you're throwing a strop because I still dislike exercise.

Fucking grow up.
