to shower my dog when she is muddy?

as in the actual shower

It depends where the shower is. It would be unreasonable to shower our dogs because it'd mean a trail of mud and spattered walls through the house and up the stairs.
We used to use a bucket of warm water in the garden until the doghouse came up with the porta shower which works brilliantly for our dogs.

Oneglassandpuzzled · 19/02/2014 10:10

We put our terrier in the utility room sink and wash her paws and undercarriage. Only do the top of her if she is filthy. Since we have started regularly rinsing her like this, our carpets have been much cleaner. She seems resigned to her fate.

VeryStressedMum · 19/02/2014 10:13

Love that porta shower never seen it before! Ender how does it work do you fill it with warm water?

Stinklebell · 19/02/2014 10:14

Mine goes in the bath. I tried the shower tray but he hates the shower and just pinned himself up against the wall and avoided the spray until I got in. Easier and dryer to do it in the bath.

Unfortunately he has a penchant for rolling in fox shit and dead seagulls and prancing about knee deep in thick, black, smell mud so the bath features almost daily

LEMmingaround · 19/02/2014 10:18

ours go into the bath with the hower attachment, they don't love it Grin

You could buy a bathmat - will stop the dog from scratching the shower cubicle.

The person who advised washing the dog outside, they don't have dogs do they? Wink

notanotherusername1 · 19/02/2014 10:24

I can't imagine not putting my dog in the shower for a complete warm shampoo wash every wk. The smell would be unbearable otherwise. He gets hosed down as well but yday he was in stagnant green stinking water so a quick hose in the garden would not have removed the smell.

We have a power shower so it's actually easier to plonk him in the shower cause its done and dusted in minutes. His face tells me he hates every second but I can deal with that.

CMOTDibbler · 19/02/2014 10:24

The portashower is amazing. You just fill it with warm water from the tap, put the lid on and pump 10 or so times, and then it squirts for ages.

I plan to take it with us in the car when we go for forest walks - last weekend we used in on the pony, and wrapped in a fleece blanket in the car it was still lovely and warm ages later

notanotherusername1 · 19/02/2014 10:28

Stinklebell

Have you seen the Fox Poo remover shampoo. It's brilliant and just zaps the smell dead. Got ours from PAH.

sparechange · 19/02/2014 11:19

Mine gets a shower with me Blush
She looks so totally miserable in the bath, and I end up getting soaked, so now she gets wrapped in an old towel to protect the carpets and carried upstairs to the bathroom, then we both get into the shower cubicle and have a shower

Stinklebell · 19/02/2014 11:24

notanother, yes, we've had some from there in the past. It's brilliant. We've got some stuff from the local animal feed type place at the moment, which isn't as good

Dog hates the bath, I can't say I feel very sympathetic though, if he's going to continue coating himself in putrid seagull/fox shit/stinky black mud, he'll have to get over it Grin

Slapntickleothewenches · 19/02/2014 11:34

YANBU. We have working gundogs and after a day out shooting they are caked in all sorts The general consensus is a brisk hosing and a towel down is sufficient Hmm

I always feel though that they have worked so hard all day so deserve a warm shower (I also always find that hosing gets me cold too and I inevitably miss a chunk)
So they both get bathed (which they actually seem to enjoy) towelled gently and put by the fire once they have eaten
We put a towel in the bottom to stop them slipping which also protects the floor :)

Shesparkles · 19/02/2014 11:35

I'm away to chuck mine in right now-he went out white and is now like a different dog-he's minging with mud!

sparechange · 19/02/2014 11:41

Slap, mine is allegedly a working dog as well...
She has a doggy bag for the car - like a big sleeping bag made out of toweling, which toggles around her neck - to keep her warm (and the car clean) then she gets in the shower with me when we get home. Same for long walks
I'm quite sure that is why she is so well behaved - because she is so pampered!

Stinklebell · 19/02/2014 12:10

We have those towelling doggy bags. They're ace.

Bit of a song and dance to actually get him in it and he always looks mortally offended by it, but as he loves dirty water and seeks out the even smallest puddle like a heat seeking missile, it's fab for keeping him warm and my car clean!

Marrow · 19/02/2014 12:37

Sparechange and Stinkerbell - which doggie bags do you have? I have looked into them in the past and they seem to have mixed reviews.

Stinklebell · 19/02/2014 12:40

We've got a couple of red ones from Amazon like these

www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_1_14/280-5969102-6947924?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=towelling+dog+bag&sprefix=Towelling+dog+%2Caps%2C589

They're great, can be a bit of a 2 man job to get him in it, but once he's in it keeps him warm and keeps my car mud free and they just get slung in the washing machine

HavantGuard · 19/02/2014 12:42

I'm another Hozelock shower convert. Great for muddy dogs and muddy boots.

The portashower is amazing. You just fill it with warm water from the tap, put the lid on and pump 10 or so times, and then it squirts for ages.

'last weekend we used in on the pony, and wrapped in a fleece blanket in the car it was still lovely and warm ages later'

Shock You must have a big car to fit the pony in.

HavantGuard · 19/02/2014 12:44

I've seen the 'dog bags'. They look like a great idea but I know mine would hate them. One would cry and the other would end up bursting out of it like something from Alien.

MissHobart · 19/02/2014 12:45

Don't have a dog, just lurking! Those dog bags look hilarious! Brilliant idea! Grin

TrinityRhino · 19/02/2014 18:51

he does have a dog
but its the complete opposite of lolly pup
its basically a dog shaped draught excluder

whereas lolly is like a caffeine fueled toddler on xmas eve

candycoatedwaterdrops · 19/02/2014 18:54

Those dog towel bags are an ace idea, sadly my white mud loving pup has a phobia of the damn towel bags. Angry

Slapntickleothewenches · 19/02/2014 19:07

I covet a pair of dogs that will sit placidly in their respective dog bags while I serenely drive my spotless car home Hmm
I think GingerDog would oblige, though with a look of haunted angst on his face. The LandShark OTOH......

popcornpaws · 19/02/2014 19:10

In the summer i hose the dog down outside, wrap a big towel round him and tuck it under his collar to dry him off.
He jumped the fence whilst "dressed" like this and the children playing nearby were shouting "look, that dog is dressed up as batman"

sparechange · 19/02/2014 19:22

I'm actually tempted to have a go at making one. I'm not remotely craft-y (I take my trousers to the dry cleaners to get the hems done, for example...) but I think sparehound would prefer one that is a bit roomier
In my head, something which is just a cylinder of fabric that bunches up at the top, so rather than having to manoeuvre the dog in, she can stand on it and we can pull it up around her, like the magicians assistants who are about to be made to disappear

I will experimient and report back to MN. Might even flog 'em on Etsy Grin

ginbin54 · 22/02/2014 21:56

Could there be a separate site called dogsnet so all the dog stuff which is so boring to the rest of could be diverted?
