To think that 40 in a 60 is too slow

Ok, so you're driving on a country road. The speed limit is 60. It has officially been deemed as safe to drive at 60. So why do so many people tootle along at 40 or less??? That's 2/3rds of the safe speed for that road and the limit safe for a lot of residential areas. If you do my feel safe driving at that speed then don't use the road! I'm fed up of getting caught behind Sunday drivers!!! Shock

Sarine, did you read any of my posts since the first?

sarine1 · 19/02/2014 13:38

I have read the whole thread and couldn't see where you contradicted your statements that people often tell you that you drive too fast and that you generally drive between 55 - 60! I can see that you have made a number of qualifying statements about different situations so maybe I have misunderstood and you don't generally drive at those speeds and people don't tell you that you drive too fast.

TwittyMcTwitterson · 19/02/2014 13:40

Select, it really is getting old having to repeat ourselves so many times. I didn't think it was necessary to go into tho who's and whatfors of driving conditions, extra twisty roads etc and that it was obvious I meant when safe to do so. Shock

Thank you for defending me. You're fantastic Grin

Sorry, but that it isnt true if one car is heavier than the other

Obviously! The driver of the heavier car will come off better and the lighter car worse. Pays to have a big heavy car!

TwittyMcTwitterson · 19/02/2014 13:44

Oh Sarine, seriously? I generally drive 55-60 on safe roads, in safe weather conditions when safe to do so.

Some people who are old men and drive everywhere at 40 regardless of speed limit tell me I drive too fast.

Anything else I can S P E L L out for you Wink

UnderYourCommand · 19/02/2014 13:56

tad agist there, don't you think?

TwittyMcTwitterson · 19/02/2014 13:59

Ha, no under. Those are the men that say it to me. There's two. They both drive gold people carriers and are old men Wink

I think you SPELL your driving attitudes clearly on this thread of ever changing statements. Thank you for the insights.Wink

UnderYourCommand · 19/02/2014 14:37

Still. I reckon you prob. drive too fast anyway.

"2 cars head on at 60 is the same as one car into a concrete block at 60 BTW."

Um, no. 2 cars head on at 60 is the same as one car at 120mph into a concrete block. If you are not near the speed of light and so into relativity (where it all changes) then you add the relative speeds.

Bartman · 19/02/2014 14:47

Sorry. You fail at physics.

Under I think you probably have a pink unicorn in your purple garden shed. Quite simply, you can't tell. You don't know

I regularly drive from the end of the A11 to the N Norfolk coast, a long stretch of A roads and small roads, and I do understand your frustration. Swaffham to the coast behind a lorry or caravan or 40mph-er is tedious and there are v few places where you can safely overtake.

However, frustration is the problem and the potential danger. I remind myself that people have a right to drive at the speed they feel safe at, that many people are simply not familiar with the roads and their bends, that there really is likely to be a hazard round every bend - bike, tractor, horse or whatever, and I have no more right to dictate the speed than any other road user.

I am not a slow driver, but there are lots of stretches of road where I wouldn't be doing 60, and yet other drivers make a risky move to overtake at 70 or faster. I daresay they are fed up with me.

Wet or windy conditions, dark or dusk, all reasons to slow down.

It can be very frustrating, but all we can do is take a deep breath and keep calm and keep safe.

Blu · 19/02/2014 15:08

Ditchling Beacon! Good grief, I wouldn't drive up that at 40, I don't think! The bikes are terrifying, and there is always one round every bend - or one on both sides of the road.

The times have been there, anyway. When Wiggo Fever has been in the air.

Oneglassandpuzzled · 19/02/2014 15:10

I have no problem if you don't want to drive at the NSL when it is safe to. But I do have a problem if you won't pull over and let me past when I am trying to get to the school bus or the doctor's. Sometimes there are seven or eight cars behind people on our country road doing 35mph.

UnderYourCommand · 19/02/2014 15:35

Well there's evidences OP. Like your diction to begin with, and your sense that your speed is the primary concern you have. And an over-blown sense of entitlement that so many drivers exhibit, and a commitment to stick with this 'entitlement' for days on end....So yeah I may be wrong but I'd strongly doubt it.*

*no unicorns were hurt in the production of this reasonable hypothesising.Grin

TwittyMcTwitterson · 19/02/2014 15:48

So if you do have a unicorn, he's safe at least Wink

I'm no more important than the slow (think I said that before) and I don't think I have self entitlement issues. I find it similar to when you're doing your weekly shop. There's always that person who stops dead in the aisles or walks really slow. It's not fair that their slowness affects others. As my quickness should not affect others which is why I don't tailgate or drive so a crash is likely meaning the road could close etc. possibly rambling now...

OP posts:
Bowlersarm · 19/02/2014 15:51

So your speed is always the correct speed, OP, whether you are in a supermarket or on a road?

Hmm, I don't have self entitlement issues, yeah right!

Bartman · 19/02/2014 15:55

If in doubt, flat out!

FryOneFatManic · 19/02/2014 16:02

Country roads round here (Leics) are not good for driving fast, even though they have a NSL limit.

Doing them at 60 would be suicidal, and that's one thing I'm not.

And while I try to drive near the limit on most roads, you've got to drive to the conditions, so M1 at rush hour in the mornings can even be stop/start driving.

TwittyMcTwitterson · 19/02/2014 16:05

Correct speed for me yes. I don't see why me wanting to go faster is self entitlement

OP posts:
Oneglassandpuzzled · 19/02/2014 16:13

Just pull over and let us past if you have a queue forming behind us.

Blu · 19/02/2014 16:13

So, OP, what do you want the other drivers to do? Stay at home at given times of the day?

What about people who like to drive faster than you - should they ask you to stay in during their morning commute, or what?

TwittyMcTwitterson · 19/02/2014 16:21

If someone wants to overtake me, as the Highway Code dictates, I ease off and let them overtake. No problems.

OP posts:
Bowlersarm · 19/02/2014 16:29

What about when you stop in the aisle of the supermarket (in your example) and someone is behind you who isn't stopping? Do you not stop for the item you want, so you don't hold them up and affect them?
