Yorkshireman flees jail because it is in Lancashire

I suppose that is an assertive decision...

Father of a friend worked at HMP Kirkham. Admission criterion seemed to be 'too stupid to escape effectively.

silverten · 13/02/2014 16:34

I couldn't wait to leave. Horrible depressing place that has gone downhill even more since I left.

ErrolTheDragon · 13/02/2014 16:40

I'm a mongrel - Yorkshire dad, Lancs mum. And live in Lancashire now ... love it. Friendlier than where we lived previously in Yorkshire.

I think what this story shows is not that there is anything wrong with Lancashire, but there is something wrong with Professional Yorkshiremen. Grin

SouthernComforts · 13/02/2014 17:02

I live on t'border! But I'm a Lancashire lass. Driving into Yorkshire is weird, like going back in time somehow. The radio goes fuzzy, my signal goes, every person I see has increasing amounts of facial hair.

I get in and get out.

Lancashiregirl · 13/02/2014 17:18

Hotpot.

Shockers · 13/02/2014 17:18

Lancashire (esp around where I live Grin) is the loveliest place on earth to me. Yes, it's a bit damp, but that's why it's so lush and green. The trough and fells are in my very soul.

Ephedra · 13/02/2014 17:35

Yes Shockers seeing the fells every day is the most amazing thing and makes getting rained on all the time worthwhile.

ErrolTheDragon · 13/02/2014 17:51

The other thing I've noticed is that while we do get rain, I've never seen much flooding... the water has somewhere to go.

IslaValargeone · 13/02/2014 17:57

I moved from Cheshire to Lancashire a couple of years ago.
We are here until dc finish school, I am counting the days. I bloody hate it here.

yolothankgod · 13/02/2014 18:00

I came on here to say exactly what SP said .

I've lived in Lancashire for 11 years and i have never met such strange folk

Yorkshire & Proud Grin

Kirkham nick ain't exactly hard to break out of what with it bn an open prison and all

HowGoodIsThat · 13/02/2014 18:03

Nowt wrong wi' Lancashire seeing as it is on t'other side ut' Pennines...

...but I retain a fondness for Lancashire having done a few years missionary work over that side...

Shockers · 13/02/2014 18:04

I invested in a Seasalt 100% waterproof parka style coat...with that and my Muckboots I don't even notice the rain anymore!

We live next to a riverbank. I have been slightly worried over the past few days, but without cause so far. The river has burst its banks a few times since we've lived here, but the flood defences are so good, we've never had a problem.

Liquoricelips · 13/02/2014 18:07

Lancashire all the way. Love the accent and the cheese.

TallGiraffe · 13/02/2014 18:12

There is no finer cheese than crumbly Lancs.

Greatnorthrunner · 13/02/2014 18:13

hermione is bob on.

HermioneWeasley · 13/02/2014 19:33

There is a saying "never ask a man if he is from
Yorkshire - if he is, he will tell you, if not, you will embarrass him"

bodygoingsouth · 13/02/2014 19:36

I have been told that corrie is based in Lancashire? I always thought it was Yorkshire? you sound the same but I am a thick brummie. Grin

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 13/02/2014 20:03

Hermione: I used to have that as a forum .sig!

Housewife2010 · 13/02/2014 20:53

Mrs Kirkham's Lancashire cheese is the best.

NotBrittaPieHonest · 13/02/2014 21:21

Body!

It's based in Salford, which is within the old borders of Lancashire (ie the proper borders)

When I'm feeling down I get myself out into the Trough of Bowland and everything in my head just stops for a while. Half-term next week and I can't wait to get out walking.

bodygoingsouth · 13/02/2014 22:11

NotBritta sorry!!!

bodygoingsouth · 13/02/2014 22:12

"An American photographer on vacation was inside a church in Oldham taking photographs when he noticed a golden telephone mounted on the wall with a sign that read '£10,000 per call'.

The American, being intrigued, asked a priest who was strolling by what the telephone was used for. The priest replied that it was a direct line to heaven and that for £10,000 you could talk to God. The American thanked the priest and went along his way.

Next stop was in Manchester... There, at a very large cathedral, he saw the same golden telephone with the same sign under it. He wondered if this was the same kind of telephone he saw in Oldham and he asked a nearby nun what its purpose was. She told him that it was a direct line to heaven and that for £10,000 he could talk to God.

'O.K., thank you,' said the American.

He then travelled to Blackburn, Darwen, Burnley, Rochdale and Littleborough. In every church he saw the same golden telephone with the same '£10,000 per call' sign under it. The American, upon leaving Lancashire decided to travel to Yorkshire to see if Yorkshiremen had the same phone.

He arrived in Halifax, and again, in the first church he entered, there was the same golden telephone, but this time the sign under it read '50 pence per call.'

The American was surprised so he asked the priest about the sign. 'Father, I've travelled all over Lancashire and I've seen this same golden telephone in many churches. I'm told that it is a direct line to heaven, but in Lancashire the price was £10,000 per call. Why is it so cheap here?'

The priest smiled and answered, 'You're in Yorkshire now, son. It's a local call.'

I have Lancashire heritage - Blackburn and Darwin. But it always rains when you get over the Pennines Grin

olympicsrock · 13/02/2014 22:13

Hello Claudius I grew up in the Trough of Bowland. Lovely isn't it? My dad taught us to shout 'look at all the slag heaps you know you're in Yorkshire when we went to visit my mum's parents..
