To dread flying because of my size?

I am going on holiday in a few days. I should be really happy but the flight is really making me not want to go.

I flew last year and needed a belt extension which was fine, wasn't much of a problem, but the thing that petrifies me most is that DP and I won't be able to sit together and if I end up sitting next to a nasty person who is ' a fat-phobe' and huffs and puffs at me the whole 3 hours for taking up more than my (tiny) seat space. I am flying with Monarch who are notorius for their tiny seats. I am a size 26 btw.

How about lets leave them alone to be whatever size they are and think about just our own diets and accept fellow human beings without patronisingly trying to change or understand them

Chippingnortonset123 · 13/02/2014 17:43

I think that the very phrase, fats gamers, is a means to normalise and not reject a life limiting and largely self imposed condition.

ifyourehoppyandyouknowit · 13/02/2014 17:43

That depends on your definition of 'fit'. Airline says in your seat, with belt on and armrest down = fit. Don't like that, use another airline.

puddingsforsandy · 13/02/2014 17:43

Hope you have a great holiday op. Please try not to worry.

TamerB · 13/02/2014 17:44

I accept them as they are, but not if they are taking up part of my seat!

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 13/02/2014 17:45

One mans normalising is another's not casting judgement on another for the size of his arse.

YouAreMyFavouriteWasteOfTime · 13/02/2014 17:46

one person being overweight is not a problem globally, but vast numbers of overweight people combined with population increase, means that we consume more food.

twas a radio 4 program about it - I think it was looking at the total human mass and what it means about the amount of food we humans consume.

Chippingnortonset123 · 13/02/2014 17:46

Difficult and irresponsible to leave it alone when you look at the cost to health services and our duty to help the population to lead a happy and productive life. It becomes the responsibility of us all, especially to help those who are only size fourteen or so.

Floggingmolly · 13/02/2014 17:50

In this instance people are only casting judgement on another for the size of their arse if half of said arse is occupying their seat, Fanjo

Fairenuff · 13/02/2014 17:51

Don't think op was a journo, she's got posting history

Not much history - just a handful of posts on a couple of threads.

I couldn't care less what size they are- I do care that they need the arm rest up and at least a quarter of my seat!

WorraLiberty · 13/02/2014 17:54

A short and somewhat iffy posting history too

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 13/02/2014 17:57

Flogging..no..they are getting on their soapbox about all sorts.

Chippingnortonset123 · 13/02/2014 17:58

Smokers and drinkers should be given help too, preferably before their habits become entrenched.

3littlefrogs · 13/02/2014 18:10

Angry birdy
I looked after a patient who suffered a DVT having been squashed by a very large man for several hours on a long flight. It was generally agreed by the clinicians that this was a contributing factor, so it is not far fetched at all.
I would feel a lot more sympathetic to the OP if she did not refer to her neighbouring passenger as "nasty" and "a fat-phobe" . That is just rude.

Only1scoop · 13/02/2014 18:12

In fairness to Op she came back to her thread and posted an apology for her 'fat phobe' comment

candycoatedwaterdrops · 13/02/2014 18:13

"Anyone over size fourteen should lose wait before they get near this sort of dilemma in the first place."

LOL Grin

candycoatedwaterdrops · 13/02/2014 18:15

"Let's not shame them; let's try to help and understand them. They are shortening their lives and are imposing an unrealistic burden on health services. Let's not pretend it is acceptable to be overweight. It may be average but it is not healthy. And on planes it is a huge discomfort."

I'd LOVE to come to your house and dissect your lifestyle, as well as your burden on the NHS. Let's not pretend it's acceptable to be a complete arsehole, even to strangers on the internet.

WorraLiberty · 13/02/2014 18:16

candy this is a genuine question (honest!) but why is that funny?

I've read people say 'I didn't just wake up fat, it crept on and I wish I'd done something about it before it got to this stage'....time and time again.

candycoatedwaterdrops · 13/02/2014 18:25

Worra It's because this thread has turned into sanctimonious bullshit about certain posters reprimanding others for being overweight. If you have the capabilities to use a forum, you know being overweight is unhealthy, don't need to be lectured by a keyboard warrior. It's laughable, who do these people think they are?!

WorraLiberty · 13/02/2014 18:30

Oh I see what you mean, so it's not so much the comment itself but the thread it's on?

In that case I agree

Mind you this thread has been bonkers from start to finish Grin

candycoatedwaterdrops · 13/02/2014 18:36

I can't bear it when some MNers get on their high horses and witter on and on about how bad it is to smoke or be overweight AS IF WE DON'T ALREADY KNOW! It's laughable sometimes though! Grin

Only1scoop · 13/02/2014 18:38

I agree much sanctimonious bull crap on here....

Sarahschuster · 13/02/2014 18:39

I sympathise with people who have eating issues and are consequently overweight. However, those people saying that this makes it OK to impinge, possibly dangerously, on others who should put up/shut up, need to ask themselves if they would say the same thing should they find themselves next to an alcoholic pissed out of their brain. Alcoholism is a disease that is very hard to recover from. But I can't imagine somebody saying they don't want to sit next to a completely plastered person on a plane being accused of cruelty in the same way those who have said they don't want to be crushed by an obese person have on this thread.
