AIBU?

Not to go to London tomorrow?

Live in the north so arrive into Euston- afaik the tube strike is still on. It's lashing it down here- don't know what it's like in London at the moment. My teenager is sick, not desperately ill but off school. It's a five hour meeting- I think the expectation is that I can get to the financial district by walking- three miles , absolutely not an issue in good weather but if its anything like this? Am I being a mard arse?

I've got 4 meetings in various locations central london over 2 days from tomorrow am and coming in from Bristol, not even sure if the train is going to get there? But i'm going to have to try despite being 20wks pg.

Oh and Roshbegosh Do fuck off and stop generalising dear Hmm We do have a 'business as usual' attitude in London, that's why the south east is thriving. The lack of a work ethic away from here often shocks me

Yes, buses are running but will be busier than usual.

Chipshop: Northern line from Euston should be fine. Jubilee line isn't running through the central section but should be running between Waterloo to Stratford, and Canary Wharf station isn't listed as an expected closure. So you should be OK from Euston on the Northern line to either Waterloo or London Bridge, then Jubilee line to Canary Wharf. If for some reason the Jubilee line is a non-runner, go to Bank and get the DLR (which isn't striking but might be busier than usual).

I was down last week, got into kings cross, needed to get to paddington station, pissing down with rain so managed to get a cab, which took 45mins and cost £25! Stayed in Ruislip on the night, managed to get a tube from harrow, but went through loads of stations that were closed, luckily it stopped at kings cross. Whole thing was a faff!

Buses will be running, with queues at main line stations stretching for a veeeery long way. Some tubes will be running, but it's impossible to predict which.

Last Wednesday (during the first strike) I had to travel from Liverpool Street to Euston with a large suitcase - I booked a black cab via the Radio Taxis website (other black taxi booking websites exist), 4 days ahead of the journey. Don't know if you will be able to make a booking today for tomorrow. I booked the pickup for a street around the corner from the station to avoid the main taxi pickup point, and left more than 3x the estimated journey time in case of bad traffic. The traffic was terrible and it took 2x the estimated journey time. I caught my train at Euston with time to spare, though.

It might be smoother than last week because they've had a little practice. Where exactly do you need to get to? Is it near a tube station? If you're outside the "rush hour" so to speak then buses will be easier to get on - or is it an early start?

I got to work ok on a bus but if you're coming from a major terminus (ie Euston) it will be a wait/fight to get on a bus.

Addison Lee (taxis) were all booked up last week but they're worth a go (depending on the time) if you're worried.

Roshbegosh, don't be so condescending.

Yes, the Northern Line was ok last week. Also, the earlier you start the better. A colleague of mine got the bus from Kings Cross to Waterloo last week and said it was fine.

Or book a cab now. Addison Lee are a good bet.

I wouldn't bother going. You will probably make a massive effort to get there and find lots of people are absent because they couldn't get a train so it will all be a complete waste of time.

I'm going from Manchester to London tomorrow night in time for a meeting first thing on Thursday.

It wouldn't occur to me not to go - because it's raining? Hmm

Could your colleagues local to the meeting pre-book a taxi for you or arrange a pick-up from the station?

Last week the roads were jammed with cabs and buses. The traffic was at a complete standstill on some main roads.

If you could get on to a bus at all, the journey took hours.

I'd probably go, but I am a Londoner anyway, so I am familiar with the routes, and shortcuts, and interconnections. Just leave enough time for the walk there, and take the slow/scenic route back.

YABU. Millions of us manage to get around the city just fine, even when the tube strikes are on. Inconvenient? Yep. Easily manageable? You betcha. Get the TFL app and check status of tube lines and trains before you leave anywhere, and check bus routes for contingency arrangements.

Barring that, there's always your legs and a brolly.

chipshop - I'd suggest the DLR from Bank to Canary Wharf rather than the Jubilee line from London Bridge, the DLR has no drivers so should be fine whereas the Jubilee line will be on reduced frequencies.

Northern line was basically fine last week so if it's the same situation tomorrow the OP has no excuse really. But do allow some extra time.

Not all the predictions of which lines would be running proved accurate last week. You'll need to keep checking the TfL site.

Traffic will be heavy, and getting a black cab will be difficult (forget trying to prebook a minicab, unless your company is a large account holder an can do this for you). If you want to get on a bus, walk back up the route an try from an earlier stop (will be sardines from a majo station and probably unpleasant trying to get on there in rush hour). Boris bikes might be a possibility, but will go early (they do move them round during the day, though, but as the vans get stuck in traffic like everyone else you can never know when more might appear). Or bring a fold-up bike with you on the train?

Or see if a colleague can pick you up - it'd be far cheaper for the company to stump up congestion charge fee and a mileage allowance than pay for a crawling along cab.

The forecast is rubbish with high winds (for London) so a brolly will be tricky in a queue of people.

If you can, come down tonight and book into a cheap hotel. Esp the poster needing to get to Canary Wharf from Euston in 1.5hrs.

The Hammersmith & City (pink line) is running through Euston to Moorgate which is in the Financial District. From Moorgate its a 10 min walk to Bank station, for the DLR to Canary Wharf. The northern line is running but even on a normal day it would be faster to walk it then queue to go two stops.

If you need to be here, then print some maps, put on some practical shoes and get walking. The river services are very efficient and you are less likely to be trampled.

For the preg lady - make yourself a Baby on Board badge and wear it prominantly.

It's worth consulting with attendees today - you are all in the same boat. If a few people can't make it at all, then better to postpone to another day and agree what can be done in the meantime.

It's cancelled now as people are coming from
The Sw and will struggle. Thanks for your replies, j can assure you I have a strong work ethic , it's not just confined to the South as some have indicated. I can't remember the last time I took a day off ill and have left my son in bed to come to work as usual. Apart from
Anything else- I don't know London other than the tube journey to our Hq - plus I can't afford to be stranded ax my husband is a police officer and him not getting to work as I am stuck on the South is simply not an option!

Thanks meditrina - your travel advice is good, though I think a three mile bike ride in central London when I have no idea where I am going might not have been the safest option!!! We have rearranged.

We do have a 'business as usual' attitude in London, that's why the south east is thriving

I second the poster who told you to fuck off. The south east is allegedy thriving because it has better transport links that have not been starved of investment the way other parts of the country have. Or is it just those stranded in the SW because their only rail link has collapsed and the roads are under water are just not 'business as usual' types? Unbelievable!!
