To be annoyed with what happened to DC at school today!

DC have packed lunch and usually their lunch consist of Water a cathedral city snack, sandwiches and some sort of fruit usually apple slices. I packed DD lunch which was water, cheese snack bites, apple slices and sandwiches. When DD went to lunch the dinner ladies look in her box and told her she couldn't have her sandwich as it was unhealthy it was a BLT with cheese as they deemed it to be unhealthy it was confiscated!!! DD came home in tears and was pretty upset. AIBU to complain? Angry DD has allergies so the school meals do not suit her that why she has packed lunch.

Over zealous misimplementation by a useless Head with no understanding of the remit they have been tasked to meet.

In other words - a dim Head for imposing these daft unnecesary rules.

Tell the LA.

curlew · 10/02/2014 23:51

Interesting that all these extreme lunch box policing incidents never seem to happen to anyone I actually know. I have heard loads of friends of friends, and Mumsnet reports.................

JohnnyBarthes · 10/02/2014 23:54

These are the same schools that banned Baa Baa Black Sheep, aren't they Hmm

BabylonReturns · 10/02/2014 23:55

They cannot ban her from taking packed lunch. They cannot I sit she has school meals.

I am furious on your behalf Angry

BabylonReturns · 10/02/2014 23:56

insist

steppemum · 10/02/2014 23:59

not quite sure what the difference is between and bacon sandwich and a ham sandwich, (nutritionally that is)
And the BLT has tomatoes and lettuce!

katese11 · 11/02/2014 00:12

Woh, change4life deems a banana sandwich a healthy option for 5-8 yos? And a boiled egg? What a bizarre lunch!

My 4yo has school dinners because I cba with all this fuss...But I doubt they're healthier than the sandwiches he would have at home..

hoppingmad · 11/02/2014 00:30

I love banana sandwiches! Freshly made though, not with the banana going brown and yucky for 5 hours before I can eat it.

There should be parents standing outside this school with placards. This is disgusting.

thinking101 · 11/02/2014 01:11

There seems wide inconsistencies.

If my DS primary attempted to tell me what to put in his lunchbox i'd wipe the floor with them. When he has has dinners, the amount of the following is quite frankly disgraceful and nothing compared to a fresh cut sandwiches, fruit etc as most have posted:

wedges
sausage rolls (oh yes)
pizza
beans
sponge based puddings (all the fecking time)

I'd be livid

volvocowgirl · 11/02/2014 02:22

I used to work for an NHS public health programme which taught children about nutrition,we used to show them how to make balanced sandwiches as part of the healthy lunchbox schemes (all of which had been put together by the PCTs head of nutrition) and a BLT was one of the sandwiches we included in the programme.

They need a lesson in nutrition, another in manners, and another on the rights of the child.

Get statements and go to OFSTED as soon as you can.

mrsstronghorse · 11/02/2014 02:34

call the head teacher first thing tomorrow. if the head won't see you, write to the Education Secretary. seriously.

GingerBlondecat · 11/02/2014 03:44

What the hell do they serve for lunch ??

take this as far as you can OP. I think the Newspapers are next

curlew · 11/02/2014 06:30

With you, abbierhodes. Not sure what's behind these stories. Just general anti school/teacher feeling?

OrangeMochaFrappucino · 11/02/2014 06:49

Well, none of this sounds like it's about healthy eating because leaving children with no lunch is not healthy and it's very extreme to confiscate with no prior warning about breach of rules - a can of Red Bull should certainly be taken away but not a sandwich! Is there any particular advantage to schools to have students eating school dinners? From all accounts, these rarely meet the guidelines imposed on packed lunches so I can't believe that the aim here is really to get children eating healthily so I wonder if there is an agenda to push children to school dinners. Is there any reason schools would want this?

Op please come back and update us when you have got to the bottom of exactly what did happen.

diddl · 11/02/2014 07:13

Maybe the schools should make it easy & just print out what sandwiches/yog/fruit kids should have on which days iyswim,

Anyone with an allergy will just have to have what they can from the "allowed" food on that day.

No "substitutions", then it's easy for staff to check.Hmm

Mojang · 11/02/2014 07:16

I might have missed it but poster who had the grapes confiscated, what did you do about it and what was the outcome?

Rosa · 11/02/2014 07:22

What are the 'school rules' and as far as you can see did she break any? i would like others take it further until you can get a satisfactory outcome.

Dolallytats · 11/02/2014 07:24

These threads make me feel grateful for DS's school. The only rules they have are no sweets, no chocolate. And by this they mean bars not a chocolate biscuit or cake. That's a sensible 'healthy eating' policy.

ISeeYouShiverWithAntici · 11/02/2014 07:29

She'll have to have the school lunch?
which comes with bread rolls and a pudding that can be ice cream, cake, etc.

it always makes me wonder why more people dont point out the ridiculous double standard by waving the school menu in front of the head.

qUite how they can justify some of the ridiculous packed lunch rules escapes me. Have you SEEN the average school lunch menu?

and when you ask them about it, you get the guff about balanced, etc.

well, then it is equally possible to balance a packed lunch in exactly the same way.

Gileswithachainsaw · 11/02/2014 07:46

Just :o

How on earth is a BLT conviscation worthy?

Seriously, it's worse than pizza with cheap ham that's half fake meat with cheap plastic cheese?

And to be told she's greedy for wanting a fecking lunch? Well that is just disgusting. Your poor dd :(

Gileswithachainsaw · 11/02/2014 07:46

Just Shock sorry typo Blush please ignore the grin
