To be annoyed with what happened to DC at school today!

DC have packed lunch and usually their lunch consist of Water a cathedral city snack, sandwiches and some sort of fruit usually apple slices. I packed DD lunch which was water, cheese snack bites, apple slices and sandwiches. When DD went to lunch the dinner ladies look in her box and told her she couldn't have her sandwich as it was unhealthy it was a BLT with cheese as they deemed it to be unhealthy it was confiscated!!! DD came home in tears and was pretty upset. AIBU to complain? Angry DD has allergies so the school meals do not suit her that why she has packed lunch.

Go to the LEA and Ofsted.

HollyMiamiFLA · 12/02/2014 20:56

This looks like it will be an interesting thread. I hope the OP keeps us updated. And I'm sure there are some nutritionists - especially those with knowledge of children's diets - to offer advice.

write formally to governors
divide the incident on 2 halves

  1. lunch contents, list the school rules, list the lunch, point out how is complies with rules. Add anything you can find to back up that a BLT is an acceptable lunch
  1. behaviour of dinner lady - removing child's lunch and then not providing alternative. If there is a problem, the parent not the child should be at front line.

be clear about what you want eg

  1. lunch guidelines - specific
  2. If lunch does not comply, they need to write a policy about how it will be dealt with, and specifically, if they consider it to be acceptable foe a child to be left hungry.

OP, The sandwich you 'packed it as a treat' wasn't a McDonalds BLT with cheese still in it's wrapper was it? I could see a dinner lady assuming that was an unhealthy addition to a childs lunchbox.

As for not providing her with replacement food, that's definitely not on

I'm tempted to suggest making a GP appointment, telling them school said you had to because you weren't feeding her a balanced diet. Armed with food diary obviously.

However I can't bring myself to waste NHS money.

perfectstorm · 13/02/2014 02:45

DS had his morning snack confiscated because it wasn't fruit or vegetables. They weren't mean and gave him an apple, but told him to tell mummy it had to be fruit or veg.

His snack was homemade oatcakes. Savoury ones. I just thought the slow release energy would be good for a tiny child - a lot of fructose in fruit! He gets at least 2 types of fruit/veg in his packed lunch, too.

I wasn't cross, as the school were very nice to him about it, and I do understand that they can't tell if it's a savoury oatcake or a sugary one, but it did make me a bit sad that it's come to this. My aunt teaches and she told me they hate having to implement this type of thing, but it's part of the job now. Sorry your school were so bloody rude though, OP. DS hates sandwiches so I've tried sausage subs, and they were fine with that. They know he gets a good diet as a rule, and the odd bit of processed pork won't kill him. (I'm assuming the bacon is the issue, since the nitrates are now deemed so very bad?)

Starballbunny · 13/02/2014 05:06

I wouldn't have been nice perfectstorm the nursery DC were coming out begging for their diner Now! When they stopped biscuits and insisted on fruit.

Small DCs need carbohydrate and sugar, many of the take three bites out of an apple, because they want to go and play.

DD2 wasted fruit in her packed lunch, she claimed grapes were squashed and apples bruised. They were by the time she got home.

After school she'd happily eat fruit in front of the stab and unwind from the day. At school she would tell any fib to get out in the yard.

Massively better to give her yoghurt (which she couldn't resist) as her snack/lunch and fruit at home.

Groovee · 13/02/2014 07:08

I reckon the dinner lady wanted the sandwich for herself. I would be complaining to the authority that until they offer a non processed crap school lunch, that you will continue to feed your child a healthier packed lunch.

I'd definitely take this higher. It's like those schools who give cake and custard for pudding but deny packed lunches a small chocolate biscuit.

HollyMiamiFLA · 13/02/2014 08:30

I think the onus should be on the school to say why the BLT was unhealthy.

It's not very helpful to say "healthy" foods and a balanced diet. Then to criticise something that is part of a balanced diet.

Because maybe they haven't actually got a clue.

PrimalLass · 13/02/2014 10:12

Try telling the paleo community that there is anything wrong with bacon. They hardly look unhealthy.

AgaPanthers · 13/02/2014 11:44

Does the paleo community knock its dinner over the head with a club?

PrimalLass · 13/02/2014 13:07

You'll need to ask them.

TwoAndTwoEqualsChaos · 13/02/2014 13:34

What happened to the actual sandwich? Why was she not sent home with it at the end of the day?

wispa31 · 13/02/2014 13:44

Not read whole threat but OMfukingG!? Wtaf?? The schools having a fukin laugh. Absolutely cluess on nutrition for a start and dont get me started on the lunchbox nazi shite!! Im raging for you, id be down the heafs office and not leaving til i had words with both HT and said fuking witch dinnerlady.
I have 1ds, only 5mths old and im actually dreading what it will be like when hes school age! Fuk me. More and more threads like this popping up now.

ladyquinoa · 13/02/2014 13:50

I'd go one step further and write to the governors about the incident. They are trying to point the finger back at you instead of dealing with the issue.

ladyquinoa · 13/02/2014 13:51

Agree the onus should be on the school to explain why a blt is unhealthy. Email.

ladyquinoa · 13/02/2014 13:52

Bacon is meat just like chicken!

Gileswithachainsaw · 13/02/2014 14:09

I think a PP was spot on. It's all about making it impossible for parents to provide an "approved" lunch to increase take up on meals.
