To think that school children should have easy access to drinking water?

I'm sure this has been done before so apologies.

My DD (7) has just had a new teacher who changed the routines around a bit. They are now only allowed to drink water at lunch and are not allowed to quickly grab their bottles whilst going down / coming back up from break time or assembly. This is apparently done so they won't have to go to the toilet too often (which is just outside their door).

I think its a bit out of order but before I have a word I wanted to check whether IABU. I know its important to stay hydrated and I don't think this is achieved by drinking before school start and only then drinking again some 3 hours later.

Ha ha - good one Brian! Grin Wink

As a former teacher, I can give you my own experience of water bottles - I fricking hate them!

Children will use water bottles to get out of lessons, as a means of distraction, as a means of argument, as a means of "accidentally" wrecking their work - grrr.

Fine if it's a particularly hot day, but they don't need them in the middle of winter outside of breaktimes. There are some interesting studies attesting to the fact that constantly sipping water does nothing more to aid concentration.

Plus, I felt they were very unhygienic for the poor kids who used to come in day after day with unwashed bottles. We should have just had a drinking fountain or water cooler outside the reception instead.

bakeroony - you've caught me out Blush
I often forget the bloomin thing until I see it in her bag and we are heading out the door 5 mins after we should have been -
I say oh it will be alright for one day - fast forward 24 hrs ...and repeat...
(everything else I do the night before but I think no point putting fresh water in a bottle and leaving it overnight)

bakeroony · 09/02/2014 19:15

Oh I'm sure a few days will do no harm Grin

It's when it gets to the state that DBs bottle did, with mould all round the rim

Don't think he's forgiven me yet for throwing it away.

Boasting is very vulgar. I hope you haven't passed those traits to your dd's.

Lovely. Hmm
Mind you don't catch yourself out in rl then. You wouldn't want your friends to see your true colours. If they haven't already.

Goodness LaQueen, I don't know you. But you're right in thinking I don't care much for boastful vulgar people. Be as churlish as you want if it makes you happy. When I log off I am still happy with who I am. But for you, it must be terribly hard to feel you need to go online to boast to virtual strangers. What is it you get from that? Which leads me to think theres something missing in your life. I think pity is what I feel for you, rather than dislike.

Fairenuff · 09/02/2014 21:07

The 11+ minimum pass is the equivalent of a 5c national curriculum level IIRC. A 5b would be a good mark at 11+ and 5a would be high.

Im sure you are very pleased your DD has passed the 11 + LaQ but really you are being a bit crass to say the least - there are many years ahead.

Fair play LaQueen. And you enjoy your night too Smile.

Chopchopbusybusy · 09/02/2014 21:28

Gosh laQueen did your DD pass the 11+! You should have mentioned it.

manicinsomniac · 09/02/2014 22:34

Not a water bottle in sight at our (age 7-13) school.

We have 4 water fountains around the school grounds and the children are required to drink a glass of squash or water at break, 2 glasses of water at lunch and a glass of water before sport. If I am teaching a double lesson (80 minutes) I give the children a drink/loo break half way through. If a child is ill or just desperate I'll let them nip out in a single lesson too but that's rare. Otherwise they can visit the fountains/loos between lessons.

Never had a problem so far. I see no need whatsoever to have water inside the classroom.

But the OP WNBU if the children aren't allowed a drink at breaktime.

SulkingintheShrubbery · 10/02/2014 06:55

I get that you are proud of your DD, LaQueen, but why do you think you feel the need to "boast" anywhere - MN or RL about it?

Your DD is a bright girl who passed an exam that lots of children passed even me and the way you throw it into so many random discussions makes you come across as a bit deranged Smile
