to feel awkward when the tesco man comes?

So, you get more clubcard points for not having bags. So every time I think "why would I need bags when it comes to my door?" and tick for no bags. Then the man comes and I have to take everything, one by one, from the boxes, and pile it up in my front room, then take small handfuls through the house to put away when he has gone.

Am I doing it wrong? It's mega awkward to be kneeling down unpacking the random shite that I've ordered in front of some random bloke, on to my floor. I always feel like I should pretend to have a system and be making piles of some kind.

When I had a pram, I used to unpack from the box in to the pram (it was a huge old style one, basically a shopping trolley) and then push the pram to the kitchen.

I feel like I'm not doing it right - the driver always looks really puzzled at me. But then people look puzzled at me all the time anyway.

Don't they take the trays into your kitchen so you can unpack them there?

NotBrittaPieHonest · 02/02/2014 21:19

I dunno... this one asked me where I wanted it, and I kind of waved at the floor. Is that what is meant to happen? Do you unpack straight into the cupboards?

I feel awkward regardless. The ocado man is due between 9 & 10 so I've conveniently nipped for a bath leaving DP downstairs to deal with it! Although I'm now finished and he's not arrived yet!

breatheslowly · 02/02/2014 21:19

When we had Tesco we got lucky and one driver let us keep the crates, then each time we just swapped the crates for the empty ones from last time.

onepieceoflollipop · 02/02/2014 21:20

is it permitted for you to have a pile of your own bags in the hall and put it in those prior to taking it to kitchen?

Tbh I would be ticking yes to bags and then recycyling/reusing them.

NotBrittaPieHonest · 02/02/2014 21:20

Ooh, breathes, that sounds v lucky!

I don't know, I don't do online groceries but I thought they took your stuff into the kitchen. You could just tip it all out onto the counter then put it away when the delivery person has gone.

lifesgreatquestions · 02/02/2014 21:21

Hm, how about keeping some bags or boxes or whatever for when the delivery comes so you can put your stuff into something???

NotBrittaPieHonest · 02/02/2014 21:21

Yeah, I think I will in future. But then I always say this, but only get th online delivery for the heavy stuff so don't do it very often and forget.

We live in wales and have to pay for bags, so I just unload at the door by chucking it all into empty laundry baskets/ tub trugs to cart into the kitchen once they've gone.

Goldmandra · 02/02/2014 21:21

I wonder if I'm doing it wrong.

I get him to bring the boxes into the kitchen then unpack some things straight into the fridge and cupboards and put other things on the work surfaces. He then takes the empty boxes out of the way or DD2 does that if she's here.

Am I expecting them to go above and beyond?

WaitingForMe · 02/02/2014 21:21

I send him round via the side gate and he brings the boxes into the kitchen. Stuff for the house goes on the dining table, fridge stuff on worktop next to fridge etc.

greenfolder · 02/02/2014 21:21

How many clubcard points do you get? Remember they are worth 1p each.

NotBrittaPieHonest · 02/02/2014 21:24

I think I mostly tick it because it just seems logical at the time - less waste etc. But actually I can just reuse the bags.

Good idea with laundry trugs...

I don't think my kitchen is big enough to contain a stranger and me moving about, plus I'm not too sure about having a random man in my house, iyswim, I'd probably manage to make that even more awkward.

olympicsrock · 02/02/2014 21:24

Mine brings the crates into the kitchen and I unload into the fridge and worktop. They have always asked where would you like the boxes, never an issue...

SingSongSlummy · 02/02/2014 21:24

I get them to bring the crates into the kitchen and then unpack on to a surface - quick and they generally don't stand and watch, they are usually getting the next crate in...!

NotBrittaPieHonest · 02/02/2014 21:27

I don't think I have enough kitchen surface to fit a crate and space to unpack it. Although if he put it on the kitchen floor I could do that...

NotDavidTennant · 02/02/2014 21:27

I pick up the whole tray and take it in the house, quickly empty the contents on the side, take the tray back and get the next one, etc. Then when the driver is gone I can put the shopping away in my own time.

Goldendandelion · 02/02/2014 21:28

I take a crate into the kitchen and empty them all over the floor and worktops, take the empty one back and get the next one. Keep going until all done. The drivers do offer to put the crates in the kitchen but I prefer this way.

jacks365 · 02/02/2014 21:29

Unload in the kitchen here too. It's the reason I use tesco not asda at least tesco does bring it through in crates.

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 02/02/2014 21:30

Wales here too and i'm too tight to pay for bags!

I always ask them to carry the crates through to the kitchen then just unpack everything onto the work tops. It gets put away after they've left.

altogetherwonderful · 02/02/2014 21:30

I haven't a clue. It's so convenient to order online but actual delivery moment is so bloody awkward - I don't want random man coming in and out to my kitchen with crates

BUT also cba unpacking at front door then lugging it all back to kitchen while random man hangs around until crates are empty

Can't the supermarkets offer a solution?

Firstworldprobs...

Arkina · 02/02/2014 21:30

My delivery man brings the trays into the kitchen. He takes the stuff out. I stick it in the fridge or on the worktop and finish putting away once hes gone

Wendydog · 02/02/2014 21:32

They always carry the crate into the kitchen, then I unload it all onto the table (kitchen/diner) and pack it away properly when he leaves. The only hard part is to concentrate over the noise of the dogs going mental on the kitchen patio doors!
