to feel awkward when the tesco man comes?

So, you get more clubcard points for not having bags. So every time I think "why would I need bags when it comes to my door?" and tick for no bags. Then the man comes and I have to take everything, one by one, from the boxes, and pile it up in my front room, then take small handfuls through the house to put away when he has gone.

Am I doing it wrong? It's mega awkward to be kneeling down unpacking the random shite that I've ordered in front of some random bloke, on to my floor. I always feel like I should pretend to have a system and be making piles of some kind.

When I had a pram, I used to unpack from the box in to the pram (it was a huge old style one, basically a shopping trolley) and then push the pram to the kitchen.

Into the kitchen here. They usually bring a couple of crates, i chuck everything on the kitchen table whilst the delivery person brings in another 2 crates.

FootieOnTheTelly · 02/02/2014 21:33

I usually get them to leave the crates in the hall where I pick them up and take them through to the kitchen where I dump them on the kitchen counters. The Tesco guy would be happy to bring the crates into the kitchen if I wanted him to.

foreverondiet · 02/02/2014 21:48

I get them to put it down on kitchen floor and quickly unpack it onto kitchen floor, no awkwardness.

JohnCusacksWife · 02/02/2014 21:54

Have only done online delivery a few times but it was v straightforward. It all came in bags though which seems to different from everyone else.

The guy brings the bags to the door, I then them from him, say thanks and shut the door. Easy peasy! Am I missing something?

Pobblewhohasnotoes · 02/02/2014 21:55

I always tick no bags and still get bags!

Borntorun25 · 02/02/2014 22:15

Ours will put crates where we want, usually he leaves them at front door, I take them through to kitchen and unpack onto floor/ surfaces quickly and take back empty crate then pick up next one. He is not hanging around much as is generally getting next crate from van while I'm emptying. Have sometimes got him to bring them through to kitchen and that works fine too. Then I put away in my own slow time, making sure all the cans and jars are facing the right way of course Grin

FootieOnTheTelly · 02/02/2014 22:34

Our Tesco delivery men (they are all men?) are really good. They are always very friendly and polite.

Lucylouby · 02/02/2014 22:49

I am now on first name terms with all the tesco delivery drivers in my area. It's not awkward, we have a bit of a chat, they put the shopping just inside the front door and I carry it through to the kitchen (which is about 5 steps away) a few bits at a time, while they get the next crate. but they will carry it into the kitchen if you want them too. I put it all on the side and put it away when they have gone. Maybe I shop at tesco too much if I know the drivers names though!

Lucylouby · 02/02/2014 22:50

We've got a lady tesco delivery person round here...

restinggenius · 02/02/2014 22:59

Ocado have it sussed - shopping comes in bags which are easily carried from door to kitchen and are then returned to delivery driver next time.
So any guilt from accepting lots of bags is assuaged by handing back lots of bags Smile

morethanpotatoprints · 02/02/2014 23:05

My son works for Asda deliveries, mostly office now but he was brill on deliveries.

Ask your man to leave the crates and give them back when you receive your next order.
Also have them taken into your kitchen.
I'm not sure if they should do this but my ds would unpack and even put away for somebody if they looked like they couldn't manage.
He delivered regularly for disabled people and would always help carers to put away.
They won't offer and don't always have the time but a lot will help if they can.

Lucylouby

I feel really bad now, I never considered there to be a lady delivery person. Blush

CocktailQueen · 02/02/2014 23:08

My tesco man comes to kitchen door, waits at door, unloads crates onto floor. I unload them into fridge or cupboards, and pile up other stuff to go in bathrooms, freezer etc. simples!

Can yours come to your kitchen door? Or just ask for bags, then recycle them or give them back!

dogrilla · 02/02/2014 23:12

The joy of having shopping delivered is always ruined by a nagging suspicion I should tip the delivery man. It had never occurred to me until a friend said she always slipped the driver a couple of quid if he brought the crates into the kitchen. What is the etiquette? I NEED TO KNOW

justanuthermanicmumsday · 02/02/2014 23:15

99% times tesco man unloads it for me! and I help him. If he happens to be an ass who stands there I say come on mate give me a hand please lol. I tick bags option, but most of the time no bags are given or I am given 2 bags and the rest bagless. I guess those workers bagging can't read? I don't mean to be a cow but it's frustrating when it's a huge order and no bags. If I had ticked for no bags I'd have boxes or laundry baskets ready to drag it in. but I tick bags and get no flipping bags.

I don't want the grocery dude in my kitchen either, just feels weird, there have been some strange characters sometimes. But most of them seem friendly enough. Plus he'd need to wear shoe bags or take shoes off to access my house.

breatheslowly · 02/02/2014 23:58

Ocado drivers aren't allowed to accept tips, so I think it is a no tipping thing.

FootieOnTheTelly · 03/02/2014 00:03

Definitely no tipping. I tip the takeaway deliver drivers but not the Tesco or waitrose delivery men or women.

MrsSeanBean1 · 03/02/2014 00:21

I just asked to keep the crates one week which the driver was fine about. We now just swap crates weekly. Much easier

tallulahturtle · 03/02/2014 02:27

I am female and I deliver wine for Majestic and i always ask where people want it and will happily put it in the cellar etc especially if they are elderly . Delivery drivers only have to put it over the threshold of your house so thank them for bringing it in. Most people are nice, got many regulars who know my name but also have many who look at me like dirt, i then want to tell them i have a degree and i graduated straight into a recession but then i think , sod them they are just ignorent.

Arkina · 03/02/2014 03:43

I ordered from Tesco regularly at my last flat. The delivery man used to come all the way down the hall and unpack in my kitchen

We had a new guy started at work one day who said to me 'Do you live in X' I confirmed I did. Then he says do you have a unit in your hall with every season of Friends. Starting to get nervous now I said yes.

I used to work for Tesco online he says proudly lol

Purplepoodle · 03/02/2014 07:27

Into the kitchen too. He pops the box's on the floor, I just unload everything into the work top and put it away when he has gone.

Purplepoodle · 03/02/2014 07:29

I prefer click and collect though tbh

Sparklingbrook · 03/02/2014 07:32

I find Click and Collect a bit cringey but it's free here at the moment so I am using it. The man holds the crate while you take it all out and shove it in the boot. But they seem to put one or two items in a bag so it takes forever. Confused
