To consider attempting to be a 'tough mudder' this summer?

Tough mudder is a scary looking 12 mile obstacle course. Neighbour is organising a team and asked if I would be interested. Had a look at website and scared myself shitless but part of me really wants to have a go.
I'm just wondering if anyone out there has either done it or knows someone who has? Is it reasonable for a 'normal' person to give it a go or is it just all really good athletic/army types who do it?
I can run 13+ miles comfortably but my only upper body exercise is pushing the Hoover around occasionally!
Don't know anyone in RL who has experience of one, would be very appreciative of feedback from anyone who has.

Me too Russian Thought it was gonna be about not letting the kids sit on xbox all day. "Yo, whas up init"

F*ck me if you can run 13 miles I'd say you are well on your way to doing this. Go for it. I'm trying to get myself in gear to possibly get to 5k. Downloaded the app 1st Jan but so far not got as far as finding my trainers. ho hum.

RussianBlu · 02/02/2014 19:27

Hahaha!!!

Salmotrutta · 02/02/2014 19:28

I thought exactly the same as Russian and gloria!!

I imagined a big 4X4 with tinted windows and the OP carrying a suspicious-looking violin case.

If you fancy it, go for it.

If you run already and you've got months to train up, you can do it.

What puts me off all these type runs is the risk of injury but that's very personal. I considered doing a Hell Run a couple of years back and the thought of injuring myself did stop me.

I'm not good if I can't run regularly and have had past ITB problems so I avoid anything that will risk aggravating that.

Usernamegone · 02/02/2014 19:36

Mrswolowitz, I signed up to the Cirencester on too last night.

I've did one 10k obsticle course last year so am a bit worried about TM being 10-12miles!

OP you are not being U but you are most definitely nuts (like me).

Famzilla · 02/02/2014 19:38

Do it!

I'm doing it this year, have been training since last April though. Loads of my friends do it every year as they love it so much.

McPie · 02/02/2014 19:41

It's not the electricity you need to worry about it's the skip full of manky ice water that was the worst thing for me, went into shock and had to be pulled out the side so will not be attempting that ever again!
To be honest you don't need to run the whole 12 miles as you end up having to wait to get on things, so if you can do 1/2 a mile then you can run the course. We had someone with an injury so did not run between many obstacles which was why it took us so long, I won't be walking much this year though.

thegreylady · 02/02/2014 19:43

my dsil did the Cholomdely castle one two years ago.He is doing it again this year. They had a great time and finished the course exhausted, laughing and uninjured .

Borntorun25 · 02/02/2014 20:16

Wow, I really want to do this now. Lots of people going back for second helpings so it can't be too bad! Thank you for all the encouragement everyone.
McPie that is a little reassuring about the electric shocks, I'm just telling myself that if everyone else survives them, and some even go back next year they can't be too bad. Hadn't thought about the tank of icy water being even worse, I will ignore that idea for now Wink
Russian I choked on my tea when I read that! Will run it past DH re new disciplinary regime for the DCs Grin
MrsWolowitz it's the Edinburgh one for me, anyone else out there going for that one?
gloria go for that 5k, getting those trainers on is the hardest step, just do it! 8 years ago I couldn't run 100 yards. Is there a www.parkrun.co.uk near you? They are absolutely fantastic, really friendly and a brilliant way to get into running.

Looks amazing. Unfortunately for me I dont know anyone who would be up for this to be part of a team and its the same weekend as my favourite 10K so not this year.

I know someone who likes to do ultra's. They are over 20 miles worth of obstacles. I think he's mad, but each to their own.

ClutchingMyPearls · 02/02/2014 22:48

Did it last year. Bloody hard work ! You can see my leg bleeding on the official tough mudder YouTube video as I came tumbling down 'Everest' for about the third time.

Great fun!

TOADfan · 02/02/2014 23:22

Oh I would love to do it!! But I can barely walk up the stairs let alone that.

Maybe 2017 will need that long to get fit.

McPie · 03/02/2014 12:10

I will be doing the one in Dalkeith Borntorun25, the bonus part is that its only 5 mins down the road by bus Grin

Borntorun25 · 03/02/2014 15:34

Ooh, that's the one I'm hoping to do, I'm all excited about it now. Started upper body work today, have a long way to go before I can haul myself across monkey bars though!
Great you are so close, we are NE Scotland so bit further for us, but will be well worth it from all the posts I've read on here Smile

McPie · 03/02/2014 16:22

They are here for about the next 5 years from what I have heard, the Country Park is perfect for it. There was even a night out in Edinburgh planned by the organisers last year, how anyone had the energy was beyond me as I had a shower and my dinner then was out for the count!
I started strength training as I struggled to get over some things and also we have a new gym over the road with a free weights section so it was a great excuse to give it a try.

Borntorun25 · 03/02/2014 16:51

Suspect I won't be up for any post-mudder fun either, will definitely be an early night! Good to know should be there for a few years if I ever want to do it again ( although seems to be addictive from what I'm hearing Grin ).
I worked out an upper body strength regime and am doing pull ups ( well, only sort of hanging there currently but WILL be doing pull ups on the underside of our open stairway. Did the circuit training recommended on website and really struggled, thought I was reasonably fit with the running, but circuits are something else. Opened my eyes! Really good to have a target to work towards though, I need that.

Thanks MrsWolowitz, I've just had a look at insanity, which does indeed look insanely tough! It is expensive but has great reviews and I guess you get what you pay for. I've never done an exercise DVD before so I'm not sure how good I would be at keeping myself going instead of thinking bugger this and heading for the kettle. Running is mentally easy, once you're 6 miles out the kettle is 6 miles back so no point in slacking Wink.
Will definitely give it serious consideration.

Good luck with your Tough Mudder and training too. It has been really helpful and encouraging to hear from everyone on this thread Smile.

My girls are doing it with some friends this year. They are doing it for a charity that supports families of people in vegetative states. The girls have never done anything like this before and are couch potatoes!! They have enlisted a couple of ultra fit friends who are training with them :). They are signed up for the Cirencester one in August.
