What way you hang your jeans and pants out on washing line

I always hung them from the legs, the way my mother told me

My friend always hands by the waist, she reckons they dry quicker as the wind is caught and blows down the legs,

So I tried it out there and sure enough, dd tracksuit legs now hung by the waist are billowing like a sail whereas my jeans are hanging by the legs and are flapping in the wind,

Obviously jeans will take longer anyway so not a conclusive test,

So off to mumsnet panel to tell me what is the correct easy to hang washing out,

By the bottom of the legs...the cuffs....that's so that the heavy waistband hangs free. If you peg the waistband of jeans, there's always a damp bit under the pegs when the rest of them is dry!

curlyclaz13 · 02/02/2014 14:52

Wear it on the top, hang from the bottom. Wear it on the bottom hang from the top.

Marcipex · 02/02/2014 14:53

Jeans from waist
Pants one peg on the side
Boxers pegged from the waist

Salmotrutta · 02/02/2014 14:53

By the legs.

See Section 5.1 ii) of The Washing Act 1911

By "pants" do you mean knickers?

Because they must be hung by the gusset.

ElleMcFearsome · 02/02/2014 14:53

Tops by their bottoms, and bottoms by their tops. That was what my grandmother taught me.

tolittletoolate · 02/02/2014 14:53

hang tops up by their bottoms and bottoms up by their tops. Otherwise you get peg marks on the legs of your trousers!

Salmotrutta · 02/02/2014 14:54

Sorry but waist-hangers are wrong.

Your washing line would be disparaged round these parts Wink

Mmmbacon · 02/02/2014 15:03

Pants = trousers of any description round me,

Dont think anyone will be disparaging me today lol, I'm the only lunatic trying to get clothes dry inbetween the showers,

But interesting that people are split,

Tops should.always be hung by their bottoms here too

Marcipex · 02/02/2014 15:06

Salmotrutta, you hang pants by the gusset??!!

Omg No one does that.

PedlarsSpanner · 02/02/2014 15:06

hang trews by waistband because other wise one gets peg marks on hem of legs, and that means IRONING eeeeeeek

PedlarsSpanner · 02/02/2014 15:07

omg someone said gusset

VelvetSpoon · 02/02/2014 15:07

I've never hung washing out - but my instinct would be to hang it from the waist.

BackforGood · 02/02/2014 15:08

Bung them all in the tumble drier Wink

WitchWay · 02/02/2014 15:09

Depends on the jeans. Trousers that often need ironing I hang from the bottoms of the legs, both legs together as if they're going to be put over a hanger but peg them to each other, with the line between, not to the line to avoid nasty peg marks. You need really strong pegs. The weight of the trousers pulls the legs straight & they don't need ironing - hooray!

Tops I hang from the edge of the shoulder seam with a loose peg in the middle of the neck to keep it from flopping & wrinkling - another avoiding ironing tactic.

Shirts by the bottoms as they'll need ironing anyway.

Socks by the toes.

Men's boxers by the waistband & my knickers by one side seam.

Towels NEVER by the corners but with plenty folded over the line.

Sheets always by the corners plus the middle of the long sides from two lines each - less ironing needed.

Badvoc · 02/02/2014 15:14

Legs!

Mmmbacon · 02/02/2014 15:15

witchway you iron sheets?

OP posts:
Salmotrutta · 02/02/2014 15:19

Marcipex - pants by the gusset.

Always.

HanSolo · 02/02/2014 15:22

Seriously salmo- the gusset? Shock Confused

Seriously- as marci said- NO-ONE does that!

That's super odd.

HanSolo · 02/02/2014 15:23

Pants should be hung from the leg, because the waistband/pockety bit is so thick, particularly on jeans, and needs to be flapped around in the heat from the radiator wind to dry.

BoJolly · 02/02/2014 15:24

I never hang my knickers out to dry. They must remain indoors so nobody except close family & friends can see them. Grin

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 02/02/2014 15:26

absolutely by the waistband, I hang for maximum wind blow here so trousers by waist so legs get blown out like windsocks, tops by one side of the bottom hem so wind goes through too, pants certainly not by the gusset but a peg either seam again for maximum blowage, and here in SW where I live people have the hoisty up wash lines one high to hoist up towels and duvets and things that want a good blow in the wind and a lower fixed line for socks and stuff. I love pegging out washing and have just brought a load in that smells divine after a day in the breeze.

Mmmbacon · 02/02/2014 15:32

how high does a hoisty washing line go?, mine is around 7ish feet high with a winder at the side to let the line go down dmd then you wind it back up,

maybe a hoisty one would be better, as plenty of ruins here, but also lots of rain, mist and fog, and thats in the summer time

OP posts:
WitchWay · 02/02/2014 15:33

bacon no I never iron sheets, ever - I just like them to look as if they don't need much ironing, IYSWIM

WitchWay · 02/02/2014 15:35

anyone got one of these?

Quite tempted

PedlarsSpanner · 02/02/2014 15:38

hmm rain never accompanied by wind!
