To haggle over price for new car?

nothingbyhalves · 27/01/2014 17:48

Car second hand from dealership. They have offered me really good part ex on my banger and 6 months tax. Dh gets really annoyed/embarrassed when I haggle. Should I ignore him and see if I can get a better deal?

I haggled for the first time ever when I bought a 2 d hand car. I got Dp to do some research about the going rate for it, then I just said "would you take £950?" Which was £450 less than the ask ing price. He said ok right away! Now I'd do it every time! It's a great car btw.

Supercosy · 27/01/2014 17:54

The worst they can say is no!

MrsArthurWellesley · 27/01/2014 17:58

I get really embarrassed too, but you'd be an idiot not to. The cars are priced expecting you to haggle.

bakingaddict · 27/01/2014 17:59

Haggling is a sport to my MIL who originally hails from Asia and i'm in awe of her skills and prowess at it. Some of it has worn-off onto my DH but i'm too polite, English and self-conscious to do it myself but admire people who can.

brunette123 · 27/01/2014 18:02

If you want to haggle then you should - can't DH stay at home if it embarrasses him? Am sure if you get more money off he will be more than pleased.

theowlwhowasafraidofthedark · 27/01/2014 18:03

You have to haggle when you buy a car, I got £1500 off a 15k car after a few days of negotiating.

impty · 27/01/2014 18:04

Haggle by email too, its easier and gives you more time to consider your response. Dh did this and got a great deal recently, thought it was much better.

Joysmum · 27/01/2014 18:09

If they accept the first offer you make you've offered too much!

I used to be anti haggle, anti confrontation. As I've got older I've got more savvy.

Sunnymeg · 27/01/2014 18:09

Haggle, but only if you are prepared to walk away from their deal. DH normally makes his final offer and if they stall, we leave our contact details and walk out. Nine times out of ten they will ring you and either accept your offer or agree to a price lower than they originally asked. DH has saved us thousands doing this over the years. It does take nerve though.

DolomitesDonkey · 27/01/2014 18:21

I'm always amazed when people don't. The book price is just a guide. My dad got 9k off recently - seriously, how can you be too embarrassed to save 9k? Grin

BellaVita · 27/01/2014 18:24

Get haggling!

I embarrass DH too... I don't care, better the money in our pocket than the dealerships.

condaleeza · 27/01/2014 18:25

Ignore GH and haggle. You will probably get a better deal and if you don't succeed you haven't lost anything. And DH will (secretly or not) admire you if you succeed (mine still recalls my last such transaction about 4 years ago).

Pollydon · 27/01/2014 18:26

HAGGLE ! < nod nod, wink wink, inside info >

ReticulatingSplines · 27/01/2014 18:28

Yabu if you DON'T.

trixymalixy · 27/01/2014 18:31

Why would you not? Be prepared to walk away. We've had salesmen running out of the showroom after us.

TeenyW123 · 27/01/2014 18:36

My dad will haggle for most things, even things you would have thought were unhaggleable. He's bought shoes, suits, chocolates, oh loads of things. His policy is - if you don't ask, you don't get.

The most embarrassing haggle for me was when he tried it at the funeral directors for my mum's funeral. I really, really wished the ground would swallow me up. And I imagined the shock that would have been on my mum's face because she always thought he was a cheeky fecker in this department.

If she'd been in her grave she would have been spinning like a propellor.

They obligingly 'rounded it down' to a round thousand, so about £50 off.

monkeysox · 27/01/2014 18:38

Yanbu I haggled and got 3000 off a brand new car!

trixymalixy · 27/01/2014 18:41

I'll haggle depending on the type of shop. For example I was buying loads of particukar sweets for a Minecraft party and got 3for 2 because I asked. I wouldn't haggle in a clothes shop, but I will always haggle when buying white goods or furniture.

Wibblypiglikesbananas · 27/01/2014 18:42

Always haggle, and go to the garage at the end of the month when staff are trying to hit targets. I know of someone who took £20,000 in cash into a garage and managed to buy a £35,000 car - wouldn't have believed it if it hadn't been a distant relative (and a dappy one at that - who walks around with £20,000???).

impty · 27/01/2014 18:42

Actually, in Harvey Nichols once I was deciding between 2 things in the sale. Dh wondered over to the assistant. Came back to me and they'd agreed a price if I bought both things. Fab! If you don't ask you dont get!

Tulip26 · 27/01/2014 18:46

Haggle, haggle, haggle! I got a grand off, a year's tax and an iPad thrown in when I bought my last car. Offer lower than you expect to pay then when they offer more you're at about the figure you want to pay. Say if if's a 15k car and you're willing to pay 13k, offer them 12k. Worst they can say is no. Like someone else said, be prepared to walk away if they say no.

bumbumsmummy · 27/01/2014 18:47

Check parkers price guide it will tell how much you should be paying

PleaseJustLeaveYourBrotherAlon · 27/01/2014 18:51

yanbu! tell dh to take a wander if he's embarrassed. It might make the salesperson think he can get way with ignoring your offer

greenfolder · 27/01/2014 20:27

Oh haggle. Forget you are british. I saw a programme once just before we replaced our cars a few years ago. Followed what they said. Researched finance part ex and went to buy 2 toyotas 2 days before the end of the month. Got deal offer from one, walked out drove to the next. We ended up with both cars with practically 40 per cent off and a whole bunch of extras. If it hadn't been for that programme I would have just paid asking price. Now I think your first offer should embarrass you!

TeacupDrama · 27/01/2014 21:05

you should always haggle when purchasing a car they price to allow for that obviously you can't haggle in aldi or asda food

but it would be silly not to try and haggle for a car, house phone etc

sorry but if you have not haggled it is unlikely it is a good deal it might be a good price for your old car but probably not such a good deal for new one for all you know it might have had a six month trax disc in when they got it
