To take my iPad to the gym?

NotJustACigar · 26/01/2014 15:38

There's a gym at my work where I go from time to time to use the cross trainer but its incredibly boring and I like to read and listen to music to distract myself.

Books are difficult because the type is usually quite small. Magazines are expensive, I don't actually find many of them very note resting, and some of the article like "How to Have a Screaming 5 Minute Orgasm" have really large embarrassing headlines that I would be embarrassed to be seen reading by my colleagues who also use the gym!

I have an old iPad and can download Kindle books, articles, etc onto it. I'm thinking about starting to use it at the gym as a book/magazine substitute to read what I like on in the ideal font size Grin.

If you saw someone at the gym with an iPad would you think they were crazy, a show off or some other type of idiot? Normally I wouldn't care that much but my boss, her boss and a lot of company bigwigs use the gym. And if you've ever used an iPad at the gym any advice on apps, etc would be great. It won't be connected to the Internet at the gym so any content would need to be downloaded beforehand. This I think makes apps like Flipboard unsuitable but would be happy to be told I'm wrong about that.

if you arent sweating so that you cant really comfortably read, then I would suggest you are wasting your time
go = exercise properly then leave

NotYouNaanBread · 26/01/2014 15:40

I prop my iPad on my elliptical/cross trainer and watch bbc iplayer.

NotJustACigar · 26/01/2014 15:43

Not helpful dr nick and plain incorrect also, but thanks for trying!

i read my kindle on the cross trainer. I end up excising for longer as i don't get bored. Go for it. Actually good idea using the iPad, could download films, shows etc and exercise to that.

DrNick · 26/01/2014 15:47

longer is not necc good though

Get one of these and enjoy

RhondaJean · 26/01/2014 15:50

Dr nick is actually right, no point plugging away comfortably for ages. Perhaps audible would be good, but Thr best thing is listening to 120-140 bom tempo music.

wobblyweebles · 26/01/2014 15:51

I also prop my iPad on the treadmill while I walk fast for an hour, and watch something good to distract me.

I disagree that you need to be unable to comfortably read. I can read and still walk for an hour and it keeps me sane and fit.

arethereanyleftatall · 26/01/2014 15:52

Yanbu at all. I'm mnetting now on the bike machine. People saying you should gym hard st the gym are looking at it the wrong way. I'm not mning on my gym time, I'm doing a little bit of exercise in lieu of lying on th e sofa typing this.

DrNick · 26/01/2014 15:52

unless you are sweating and your heart is up then you arent really doing anything for your heart

MollyBerry · 26/01/2014 15:54

As arethereany says it doesn't have to be about sweat. It's better to be walking on the treadmill on your ipad than lying on the sofa doing the dame

DrNick · 26/01/2014 15:55

well yes.
but not much

arethereanyleftatall · 26/01/2014 15:55

and I've just done a sprint in between these posts! See, interval training!

NotJustACigar · 26/01/2014 15:59

Please more iPad/kindle talk, less intensity? Ive read up on that a lot already. I exercise doing intervals between 145 up to 170bpm using a heart monitor. I sweat plenty I promise you! But I can still read if the font is big enough and the topic matter interesting enough. I listen to music as well (rap Blush).

Any advice on apps to use, stuff to download, etc?

OP posts:
RhondaJean · 26/01/2014 16:00

Rap was apparently the best music to run to if I remember correctly.

RhondaJean · 26/01/2014 16:01

Oh yeah as I was sayings audible is good, they read the book to you.

5HundredUsernamesLater · 26/01/2014 16:01

No idea about the Dr Nick comments but I don't think you would look an idiot or a show off. I think if it helps you enjoy your gym session more then go for it.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 26/01/2014 16:02

Nope... I wouldn't notice you unless you were doing something odd - or I thought I recognised you from somewhere. I have my mp3 player ensconced in a bun on my head as I go swimming straight after the gym so would hope that you wouldn't judge me too harshly... Blush

wobblyweebles · 26/01/2014 16:02

I walk fast enough to sweat and can still read/watch TV. It's a big enough screen and some of us are clever like that :-)

NotJustACigar · 26/01/2014 16:04

LyingWitch if I saw that I would think you were awesome!

eurochick · 26/01/2014 16:06

Listening to music or watching tv - fine. But I agree with DrNick that if you can read you are not working hard enough.

I've taken a book into the gym a couple of times but only when really, really bored with my workout and didn't want to go at all, and made a bargain with myself to do it this way!

RiojaHaze · 26/01/2014 16:07

There's people in my gym who read on iPads. I read on my kindle if I'm on the cross trainer or bike but can't read when I run so I listen to podcasts of women's hour to keep me entertained.

TheQueenOfSparta · 26/01/2014 16:08

I read on my ipad whilst doing elliptical exercises and I'm not the only one at the gym. In fact, now that I think of it, most people use either their phones or tablets/pads.

NotJustACigar · 26/01/2014 16:10

Thanks, all! eurochick did you see my post at 15:59? It would be kinda dangerous for me to exercise at a higher intensity than that - 220 beats minus your age is meant to be max, then you should exercise up to 85% of that. I do well over 85% on my intervals but can't do more plus I really, really sweat!
