To take my iPad to the gym?

NotJustACigar · 26/01/2014 15:38

There's a gym at my work where I go from time to time to use the cross trainer but its incredibly boring and I like to read and listen to music to distract myself.

Books are difficult because the type is usually quite small. Magazines are expensive, I don't actually find many of them very note resting, and some of the article like "How to Have a Screaming 5 Minute Orgasm" have really large embarrassing headlines that I would be embarrassed to be seen reading by my colleagues who also use the gym!

I have an old iPad and can download Kindle books, articles, etc onto it. I'm thinking about starting to use it at the gym as a book/magazine substitute to read what I like on in the ideal font size Grin.

If you saw someone at the gym with an iPad would you think they were crazy, a show off or some other type of idiot? Normally I wouldn't care that much but my boss, her boss and a lot of company bigwigs use the gym. And if you've ever used an iPad at the gym any advice on apps, etc would be great. It won't be connected to the Internet at the gym so any content would need to be downloaded beforehand. This I think makes apps like Flipboard unsuitable but would be happy to be told I'm wrong about that.

As I'm marathon training some of my training is on the treadmill for jog/walk/run combos for HOURS (or so it seems!) so using the iPad for watching a film or listening to audible makes the time go a lot quickerSmile go for it!

NotJustACigar · 26/01/2014 16:14

Good luck on your marathon, MrsF, so impressed with anyone who does one!

I'm sure there's a podcast somewhere about how to have amazing orgasms so just listen to that Wink

MrsFrankTurner · 26/01/2014 16:16

Cheers NotJustSmile off to Google orgasm podcast Grin

My gym has screens on the treadmills and bikes and crosstrainers for TVs and slots for the old ipods. I watch TV and listen to music but wouldn't be able to read on the bike or treadmill. I tend to do interval training and not more than 40 minutes per machine. If the font is large aren't you constantly turning pages?

wobblyweebles · 26/01/2014 16:44

If the font is large aren't you constantly turning pages?

Fairly often, but I just see that as including my arms in the workout...

NotJustACigar · 26/01/2014 18:34

Not really turning pages but scrolling on the iPad which is easier.

Loads of people use their iPads at my gym and nobody takes any notice of them. Far too busy focussing on themselves! Go for it.

edwinbear · 26/01/2014 20:03

I saw a guy following a work out video on his Ipad in the mat area of my work gym recently, I did have to stifle a giggle at that. But if you're reading/watching a film/music videos etc I wouldn't bat an eyelid. It's no different to watching the big screens is it?

FracturedViewOfLife · 26/01/2014 21:24

I have a big gym like treadmill in the spare room and I duct tape my iPad to it.I usually have something rubbish on Netflix, so I don't need to pay attention, when I use it. It makes time go quicker and also makes me go for longer sometimes.

I use Audible when I actually venture outside on long walks.

Kitsey · 26/01/2014 21:32

Nobody would bat an eyelid - I find it weird that you asked!

HermioneWeasley · 26/01/2014 21:33

I also watch BBC iplayer on the cross trainer

wowfudge · 26/01/2014 21:50

Am I the only one who doesn't need any kind of distraction/entertainment while exercising? I can understand having some music on, but I actually like just to concentrate on what I'm doing and focusing on that. If I am outside and walking, I don't want to be listening to music, on my phone, etc - I like to take in my environment. I would only think someone else was BU if they were not using headphones with their tablet, etc.

willjusttellyouonething · 26/01/2014 22:04

I use my iPad at the gym

willjusttellyouonething · 26/01/2014 22:05

Wow, I find it all so BORING I need a distraction!

I discern from your post you actually like exercise which I don't Grin

DrNick · 26/01/2014 22:22

Give it up, Dr Nick Grin. I would actually like to try spinning actually, but my gym doesn't offer it.

Kitsey, that's the story of my life - people find me weird no matter what I do!

Seems like the consensus is to take it. Thanks, all!

Try spinning

DrNick · 27/01/2014 06:47

Oh that's a Bummer. It's SO exhilarating

andadietcoke · 27/01/2014 06:53

When fat burning, as opposed to cardiac, my iPad was a lifesaver. Low intensity, but for longer, meant that I worked my way through Mad Men Series 1 before work every day for a few weeks. The iPad also blocks all the stats which I find useful - better to just block it out and plod on.

badgeroncaffeine · 27/01/2014 06:54

If a gym session is "boring", you aren't working hard enough.

DrNick · 27/01/2014 06:54

I'm with badger
