to think this Morrisons checkout person was BVVVU?

Took 2.5yo DD to Morrisons to grab a couple of bits and pieces and went to the self-serve till. As the area was festooned with Peppa Pig DVDs, Chocolate Bears etc DD wasn't keen to stand quietly next to me, to say the least. I decided to move to a normal checkout.

Before I was able to do so DD ran off to the other side of the tills and bolted down the shop. I ran after her (away from the exit, towards more tills and the customer service point). The self-service operator shouted (aggressively). "What do you think you are doing?"

I didn't realise she was addressing me so continued to go after DD. "Assistant" ran after me shouting "Stop! Where are you going. You can't go there. Give me that!" etc

I told her I was going after DD (now about 20 feet away trying to get up on a bloody peppa pig ride-on car). She kept shouting at me but I had to blank her as I needed to get to DD. She stood glaring at me as I dragged DD to a checkout, which was no doubt much appreciated by everyone waiting for help in the self-service area.

Is so unreasonable to run after a child while carrying basket of shopping and heading away from the exit, so clearly not legging it? Even if it is, a little understanding/courtesy wouldn't go amiss.

And breathe....

Why - do you work for Morrisons Alis? Grin

Terrortree · 25/01/2014 21:43

Alis, we can't. Whilst MNHQ have TSSNCOP, its users are people who for operational reasons can't disclose their location!

Joules68 · 25/01/2014 21:46

Ha ha coldlight!!!

Alisvolatpropiis · 25/01/2014 21:47

I don't Sir but I know someone who does, not on the checkouts mind.

Feedback is always helpful innit

SirChenjin · 25/01/2014 21:49

Central belt Scotland - is all I'm saying Alis

I would like to stick up for my local Morrisons because the staff are always lovely to me.
DS2 has had some of the most horrific tantrums in Morrisons and the staff are always very understanding, and try and distract him.
I have to fit my weekly shop in the buggy. Once when I was heavily pg with DC4 one of the staff carried my basket round the shop for me.
They always give me an extra kids meal for free in the cafe so Me and 4 DC eat and drink for £8.50.
Excellent customer service and good quality food, I love Morrisons.

My only complaint is the bread in mine is nowhere near as well cooked as the bread my sister gets from hers!

Grin @ Sir

I once stopped at Morrison's on my way to a dinner party at my parents. DH was working and my youngest Dch was 15 months old, soooooo, I put my baby in a baby trolley, held my 4 yr old's hand & bought a bottle of wine & a bunch of flowers. The checkouts were queued back into the store, so I went to the basket only till. The till lady shouted at me that I should not be in that queue & refused to serve me. I HAD 2 Items & A BABY IN MY TROLLEY!!!!!!!!!!!!! (& I was paying in cash!!!!!!) I complained & the manager backed the checkout assistant. Bonkers! I don´t do my £100+ weekly shop at Morrison's any longer.......(quel surprise!)

Manchesterhistorygirl · 25/01/2014 21:54

East manchester. That's where.

CaptainSinker · 25/01/2014 22:02

Yes, coldlight, that is what I was waiting for. You have the prize of knowing you are right! There is no greater gift than knowledge. Enjoy!

I might add that the same store has some lovely checkout staff as well though.

Alis - town on n.e. Scottish Coast.. Will say no more specific than that!

BlackeyedSusan · 26/01/2014 00:57

well ali tell your friend that they swapped value wholemeal for value brown and made their cheap milk two litres and thus more expensive per pint. I went to aldi down the road and found the bread nicer and cheaper and the milk still four pints.

yorkie11 · 26/01/2014 01:07

I purchased some clothes from morrissons and asked for the hangers. I was tokd it is against company policy to give them.

Alisvolatpropiis · 26/01/2014 01:13

yorkie that's becoming quite common everywhere sadly. I was quite put out when the assistant in Topshop refused to let me have the hanger for the same reason. I understand places which do wooden hangers not handing them out willy nilly, but plastic ones?! So many people say no anyway.

DameDeepRedBetty · 26/01/2014 01:28

The Morrisons here is a Local, and the staff are lovely. Just want to say because there've been so many horrible experiences recounted on this thread.

I think it might be more about the sheer size of shops rather than the actual operator. IME, the bigger the shop the worse the customer services. The experiences of truly awful customer care that stand out in my memory are Enormous Tesco - twice, and Enormous Asda.

To be fair, the same Enormous Tesco were very patient with me when I got myself in a right pickle trying to redeem some clubcard coupons just before Christmas.

I still wish there was an Aldi or a Lidl in town though... I've never had shite service from either of them.

SirChenjin · 26/01/2014 10:01

Our Aldi shop assistants are definitely the most friendly out of all the supermarkets I've used.

Manchesterhistorygirl · 26/01/2014 10:08

My local tescos are brilliant, the staff are really friendly and helpful. Ds2 often decides he needs the loo half way around and they always look after my trolley for me, they'll run and grab whatever I forgotten and are just really nice and friendly.

Caitlin17 · 26/01/2014 10:12

I think perhaps the more usual reaction to what happened would have been to drop the basket of shopping and run. If you were trying to stop an absconding toddler lugging a basket of shopping which you hadn't yet paid for,and therefore is not important whether you have it or not, seems a bit odd. Perhaps the assistant didn't necessarily make the connection between you and the child.

SirChenjin · 26/01/2014 10:49

I'm not sure that's true Caitlin - I wouldn't have dropped the basket, I would have been too worried that someone would have moved the shopping that I'd just spent ages gathering together in my basket.

The thing is, until you're in that situation and making those split second decisions, no-one would know for certain how they would react. Bottom line is that the OP was running away from the entrance, after a bolting child. The assistant had no right to assume any criminal activity was taking place unless the OP had actually left the shop with unpaid-for goods.

Caitlin17 · 26/01/2014 12:09

Sir up to you pretty certain catching the child would be far more important than the inconvenience of having to re-stock an unpaid basket of groceries. Personally I think the natural reaction would be to drop everything you'd been carrying.

As for what the assistant was entitled to assume running in a shop with a basket of groceries is not exactly normal. Assistant should have backed off once she had the explanation

SirChenjin · 26/01/2014 12:14

We'll have to disagree - I would just run, wouldn't think about putting anything down. Regardless of the fact, whether or not anyone thinks it's normal/abnormal, the assistant had no right to assume criminal behaviour or to run shouting after a customer who is chasing a bolting child. That, in my opinion, is less of a normal reaction and one that warrants more of a raised eyebrow.

Oakmaiden · 26/01/2014 12:19

My understanding is that you cannot assume someone is shop lifting/attempting to shoplift until they walk out of the door to the shop. Since the OP was running AWAY from the doors it all seems very weird.

SunnyRandall · 26/01/2014 12:36

Re filling trolley like a shoplifter - he prob meant a "box trolley" whereby you put big packs of loo roll, cat litter, washing powder etc around the edges of your trolley (making a "box") then put high value items in the concealed middle bit ready to steal.

manticlimactic · 26/01/2014 12:51

I don't understand why she shouted at you OP. You hadn't started putting stuff through and were just moving to a checkout? Confused

More than two chocolate oranges gets you banned from the self service checkouts confused. How very odd.

They were on offer a while back and limited to two per customer.
