to think this Morrisons checkout person was BVVVU?

Took 2.5yo DD to Morrisons to grab a couple of bits and pieces and went to the self-serve till. As the area was festooned with Peppa Pig DVDs, Chocolate Bears etc DD wasn't keen to stand quietly next to me, to say the least. I decided to move to a normal checkout.

Before I was able to do so DD ran off to the other side of the tills and bolted down the shop. I ran after her (away from the exit, towards more tills and the customer service point). The self-service operator shouted (aggressively). "What do you think you are doing?"

I didn't realise she was addressing me so continued to go after DD. "Assistant" ran after me shouting "Stop! Where are you going. You can't go there. Give me that!" etc

I told her I was going after DD (now about 20 feet away trying to get up on a bloody peppa pig ride-on car). She kept shouting at me but I had to blank her as I needed to get to DD. She stood glaring at me as I dragged DD to a checkout, which was no doubt much appreciated by everyone waiting for help in the self-service area.

Is so unreasonable to run after a child while carrying basket of shopping and heading away from the exit, so clearly not legging it? Even if it is, a little understanding/courtesy wouldn't go amiss.

And breathe....

You think it's the checkout staff who put the sweets there??

Fantissue · 25/01/2014 19:47

Doesn't make it any easier when you're on the receiving end.

It was a good point about how shoplifters sometimes use kids to distract staff. It happens all too often and causes problems for people going about their business in a perfectly innocent way like the OP.

CaptainSinker · 25/01/2014 19:49

piglet just want to be clear I wasn't being sarcastic about needing to use restraint in the supermarket! Just as DD gets older I think we'll be OK without, then realise I am crazy to think so.

CaptainSinker · 25/01/2014 19:53

Thanks for all the understanding comments. I know if isn't exactly a big deal but I did feel a bit wrong-footed and it was good to get things off my chest.

SirChenjin · 25/01/2014 19:53

She over-reacted, and had absolutely no right to assume you were trying or accuse you of trying to shoplift anything until you had actually left the shop without paying. Silly woman.

As for putting down your basket, yeah, probably - but you reacted instinctively to your child running away and chased after her.

Manchesterhistorygirl · 25/01/2014 19:56

You are not being unreasonable!

I've had two run ins with Morrisons staff over nothing!

One was when I had less than 15 items in my trolley and went through the self service! I got shouted at for bringing a trolley through, even though I explained I had ds2 strapped into it. She literally shouted at me! I complained and got a voucher. £5.

The second time was when I was refused entry to the self service area, with a basket, because I had more than two chocolate oranges! That time I'm afraid I shoved the basket into the assistants hands and stropped off.

So no you are not being unreasonable, because Morrisons staff are obviously trained to be annoying.

pigletmania · 25/01/2014 19:57

Mabey at the moment you need to, so you can shop in peace, and know dd is safe, you cannt 100% trust a toddler.

Waitingforflo · 25/01/2014 20:01

I'd like to know how stiffstink's mum was filling her trolley like a shoplifter please Grin . . .

CaptainSinker · 25/01/2014 20:02

Yes, definitely! Think I will dust down the reins.

OP posts:
CaptainSinker · 25/01/2014 20:03

Maybe it is what she was buying? When I worked in Safeway we were told to look out for trolleys piled with nappies, razor blades and vodka.

OP posts:
Waitingforflo · 25/01/2014 20:05

I'm getting a very odd mental image of her mum then Captain!

mothergothel2 · 25/01/2014 20:11

You could say that since they deliberately put kiddy treats near the tills to entice kids and take advantage of "pester power", it's at least partly the supermarkets fault.

LittleBearPad · 25/01/2014 20:12

More than two chocolate oranges gets you banned from the self service checkouts Confused. How very odd.

Yes OP would have been better if you'd not taken the basket but hindsight is great. Also you we're clearly chasing a small child away from the exit. The shop assistant was a bit silly.

pigletmania · 25/01/2014 20:14

Yes morrrisons person was a bt heavy handed, they sound very bad

Misspixietrix · 25/01/2014 20:17

If you had put your basket down OP you would have probably lost it anyway. We found this out to our detriment when took DM for a spin in her wheelchair. Set the basket down for five minutes. Told the checkout operator and it was still taken back. Manager very kindly went to retrieve said items as I was picking all the stuff back up round the store like an idiot. She saw me and said look I left them there. Pointed to the till. Which had naff all on it as that had been removed sharpish too. YNBU OP she did overeact a little.

Joules68 · 25/01/2014 20:20

Well to be fair anything left on our tills/checkout area with a barcode on it would be an instant audit fail.... That might be why

And audits don't give advance warning

Misspixietrix · 25/01/2014 20:27

I understand that joules but I had specifically told a checkout assistant we wouldn't be long. (DM needed the ladies and with all her extra medical equipment at the Minute she takes a good five minutes). I couldn't take the basket with me they would assume I had taken disabled mother just to shoplift Grin. The stuff the lady said she left a t the end of the till actually said to me "I put it down there 2 minutes ago". When she had just explained to me stuff gets put back after x minutes for health and safety. Was just pointing out to others putting the basket down might not have meant it was still there when she got back not to mention the trip hazards to others etc. I think OP maybe it was just a new worker who was being over zealous? Could understand if she was running towards Dd who was bolting out the exit door but she werent she was running towards the tills so the checkout lady is being unreasonable. :)

FloweryFeatureWall · 25/01/2014 20:31

Or maybe the checkout assistant you told wasn't the one that moved it? At moggies, there's staff who are allocated collecting abandoned baskets like that and it's like a ninja attack, they are silent and deadly, so the first checkout assistant might not have even noticed or had chance to say anything.

23jannc · 25/01/2014 20:54

I got kicked out of Morries years ago as a twelve year old for consuming an item in the cafe that hadn't been bought there. I was hiding there with my packed lunch as I got bullied if I ate at the school! The security guard (they employed three for school lunches) made me cry as he walked up very slowly/quietly behind me and then shouted at me to leave the premises immediately. Walked me to the car park with his hand on my shoulder and everything.

To clarify, some sixty or seventy school pupils ate there daily, in the cafe. Some two hundred if not more bought products from there four times a day. 75% were complete hooligans, shoplifting, eating everything before paying, etc etc. I was in the corner reading my book, alone. I was eating animal bites and drinking from a flask FFS.

On principle of the way they handled it (yes I know, you shouldn't eat in a cafe products you didn't buy but come on, Morrisons cafe? hardly fine dining?!) I won't shop or eat there.

Misspixietrix · 25/01/2014 21:14

Flowery I didn't say she moved it. Was just stating she would have lost it if she did put it down. I know they're quiet stealthy ninjas the managers lot went within minutes! ;Grin. ¿anyway I digressed. Sorry OP. 23 :( Flowers.

Yanbu - she could have handled it better.

Curious to know where all of you were when you had these bad Morrisons experiences. Would you tell me please? Pretty please?!

Terrortree · 25/01/2014 21:33

I'm glad I'm not the only one to have given up on Morrison's - despite the adorable Ant and Dec's persuasive adverts. It IS better than Tesco's, their local competitors, for choice and quality in my town.

But they are just CBA about everything. In fact one check out girl said 'I can't be arsed' when I asked for cash back. I just find their staff rude and sully.

I can't be arsed to go there now.

SirChenjin · 25/01/2014 21:35

The only reason I ever go to Morrisons is if a)everything else is shut or b)if I want to buy fancy schmancy veg from their smokey veg section. The customer service is non-existent.

Alisvolatpropiis · 25/01/2014 21:35

Please please please tell me where these duff stores are! Thanks Wine Cake
