I actually don't understand why you would need Hive to control your heating at home....

While you are out making eleohants out of origami or doing football.

What's the point?

Surely you just put it on the timer?

We have a tado system. Not sure what hive does in comparison but I am finding it very nifty as I do not have a set pattern of being in and out on a weekday. It seems to keep the physical house at a certain temperature so it doesn't need to turn the boiler on for long before it is warm. It's installed on both mine and DH 's phones. Unfortunately it's our first winter in this house otherwise we could have compared bills with and without it. It is not a necessity but I like it!

londonrach · 25/01/2014 07:49

Glad dh and i arent the only ones shouted at the tv why. Everytime we go to waterloo train station the hive ads are on the floor. Makes us laugh. Mind you i love the song, very catchy....

bruffin · 25/01/2014 09:50

But for 20 quid you can buy a lovely programmable thermostat which allows you to have lots of settings. It lets us have weekday and weekend settings with about 4 different programs for each.
Cant find one under £50 and the cost of the hive includes installation. You can get a wifi thermostat for £100 + if you want to install it yourself.
As I said above ours came with our new boiler, so cost really wasnt an issue

IronOrchid · 25/01/2014 11:48

I mute the telly when the ad's on. So despicably twee. Urg.

TheXxed · 25/01/2014 11:55

Iron orchid I have to change the channel.

babyicebean · 25/01/2014 11:59

Himself thought it would be a good idea - I said no as he would be turning it down while at work, he likes it polar I like NOT to have icicles inside the house.

ParsingFancy · 25/01/2014 12:02

To be fair, it would definitely be useful if you were a controlling bastard who didn't want the SAHP to have the heating up during the day.

ParsingFancy · 25/01/2014 12:03

Ha - good X-post!

ParsingFancy · 25/01/2014 12:03

(Not that I'm suggesting your DP is a bastard, babyicebean.)

Birdsgottafly · 25/01/2014 12:20

"unless you are irretrievably dense."

I wondered how long it would take for the thread to use insulting language.

Having previously done Home Care, for adults with a range of MH and physical disabilities, I can see why this could be useful.

The Care Worker/acting Manager in charge of supported, but self contained Unit could use this method, it would ensure greater privacy for the tenants.

I can't afford to have the heating on, but if I could I would use this, my DD is quite independant (LD's) but doesn't always have the attention span needed for heating/cooking controls.

My eldest doesn't because if her ADHD and Dyslexua, she is now an adult but often leaves the heating in, her and her partner are on call and wirk various shifts.

If the technology is available, then why not develop it?

It probably won't cost anymore to have it included as standard in the future and those in HA, Rented accommodation etc can't install controls, if they don't come as standard, or are managed by British Gas.

Again, many MN posters just don't seen to realise that we all live different lives and your set up at home, isn't everyone else's.

AGnu · 25/01/2014 12:29

Birds I was just about to say that my DGM has Parkinsons & lives with my parents. She's ok to be left alone for a little while but if she gets chilly she struggles to move. My parents can control the heating with their phones so all it takes is one text to my mum & the house is warm enough for her to be comfortable again! It's made their lives a lot easier. Previously my mother would've had to drop everything & go home just to press a button.

We'd have absolutely no use for it though. I do think they're trying to sell it to a wider audience than will actually be interested.

SarahBumBarer · 25/01/2014 12:36

Never heard of hive before but I own shares in a small company which does something similar. They have just released their heating controls/app etc to huge anticipation and a lovely 50% jump in the share price. I think you underestimate the desire for gadgets.

Also my work finish time is very unpredictable, this app/control means I am not wasting money heating my house unnecessarily, it allows me to control individual rooms so I do not heat the entire house just to have a warm kitchen/living room when I get home and returning from holiday last week, I could just flick the heating up as we left the motorway - our old timer would not have dealt with a one off post holiday requirement and certainly not with a flight/motorway delay.

We also remote control our lighting and blinds Grin

FanFuckingTastic · 25/01/2014 12:53

I like it. Remote control heating. Even if I am just in the house. Saves getting up to do it.

Pixel · 25/01/2014 18:06

Agnu, I can see how that can save the family a lot of wasted journeys. I just wonder how you can know if the house is cold or not when you aren't even there. It could be chilly where you are and the other person could end up sweltering because you've turned their heating up thinking they must be cold too.

bruffin · 25/01/2014 20:16

When you go online it tells you the temperature in the house as well as the temperature outside. You can also get graphs of average temp over a period time etc.

Coumarin · 25/01/2014 21:01

Never heard of this before but just going off the info on here I like the sound of it. I love a gadget.

We don't have regular routines and hours so often the hearing comes on when we aren't home and it feels like a complete waste. This would be handy and I could pretend I was in a Sci if film being all futuristic with my fancy heating.

Coumarin · 25/01/2014 21:07

*heating
Sci-Fi

Hmm
Thornita17 · 25/01/2014 23:07

Drives me insane.

ParsingFancy · 28/01/2014 15:31

So here's a thing.

There's currently a stickied thread entitled: Please share your tips on online security at home with Cyber Streetwise.

One of the Qs is, "How many computers and other devices do you have that connect to the internet?"

How many people on this thread would count the central heating when answering that Q?

If it wouldn't have occurred to you, perhaps it should. The fridges and TVs are at it already. (Fridge sends spam emails as attack hits smart gadgets, BBC)

absoluteidiot · 28/01/2014 15:47

Is it just me hates that smug self satisfied singing voice on the ad?

And it's pointless for me as I have coal fires. Unless Mr Smug is going to break into my house to light the fire when I'm out, or use a fire extinguisher on it....

bruffin · 28/01/2014 16:04

Parsingfancy

I did actually include my heating in answer to that question Grin

ParsingFancy · 28/01/2014 16:06

Grin Is your heating asking whether you'd like a bigger penis, yet?

Dahlen · 28/01/2014 16:09

Just had to google this as I've not come across it.

I guess I can just about imagine why people would want this, but my god that advert is long and annoying.

IncognitoBurrito · 28/01/2014 17:55

Also, for second homeowners. Perhaps they don't fancy the Cornish Coast so much in January so with this device they can stop the pipes from freezing and air the cottage without the 5 hour drive down from Chiswick Grin

TiggyOBE · 28/01/2014 18:01

You might be beating off some badgers
That are trying to bite your nadgers
WHILE HIVE IS BUSY CONTROLLING YOU HEATING AT HOME

You might be tied to a Basingstoke bollard
For insulting the lovely Su Pollard
WHILE HIVE IS BUSY CONTROLLING YOU HEATING AT HOME

You could be carving an erotic pattern
Across the second largest moon around Saturn
WHILE HIVE IS BUSY CONTROLLING YOU HEATING AT HOME

etc.

Pointless product, but catchy toon.
