I actually don't understand why you would need Hive to control your heating at home....

While you are out making eleohants out of origami or doing football.

What's the point?

Surely you just put it on the timer?

OP posts:
ouryve · 24/01/2014 23:03

Me neither. I have a timer thermostat thingy. It works just fine without controlling it remotely.

DollyTwat · 24/01/2014 23:06

I'm so glad you said it
I've never thought about my heating when I'm out enjoying myself. Never. Ever
It's on a timer, that I set, knowing when I want it on

TheZeeTeam · 24/01/2014 23:07

Are Hive the same as Nest thermostats? Because I bought two of them today and now I feel a bit of a fool! Blush

DollyTwat · 24/01/2014 23:08

Can you imagine being out with your mates and suddenly your heating dilemma pops into your head, so you have to sit down and PROGRAM YOUR HEATER to be a bit warmer when you get in!

SanityClause · 24/01/2014 23:08

The house always feels warm when you get in, anyway, even if the heating is off. Turn it on the minute you get in, or in our case, light the wood burner, and it's warm in no time.

FannyBazaar · 24/01/2014 23:08

I think it sounds great, haven't seen ads though. I have my heating thermostat on 18 degrees then turn up when I'm a bit chilly but would probably be happier to set it lower and switch on when I'm on my way home. Also when I go to bed at night, I take my phone upstairs with me and never bother taking the thermostat, sometimes forgetting the heating is still on. I'd be happier to be able to switch off with my phone than going back downstairs.

I'll confess that I couldn't figure out the whole complicated timer and picking a different temperature for each time when I don't know in advance when I'll be in each day.

TheZeeTeam · 24/01/2014 23:12

Dollytwat No. But I CAN imagine being out on a hot night and thinking, "Bugger, I forgot to set the a/c and the house will be a big sweaty mess when I get home!"

bruffin · 24/01/2014 23:14

Its not just about being to control your heating remotely, you have a lot more control of temperature ie Our old system the timer was seperate from the thermastat. Hive is all in one, we very rarely access it remotely but if there is a problem dh gets a text to say system has gone off. He can then go online and find out whats wrong.

DoilyDawg · 24/01/2014 23:15

How much! It costs £199!!!!

I can see how it would be useful for some people but I'd rather shiver for half an hour while I wait for the heating to come on than heat an empty house.

member · 24/01/2014 23:18

It's what British Gas engineers try to flog to you now instead of carbon monoxide detectors...

MostWicked · 24/01/2014 23:27

Could I be lying in bed on a cold morning and use my phone to turn my heating on?

Purpleknickers · 24/01/2014 23:33

I have it, it came along with my new boiler. I have NO IDEA how to use the damn thing I set up timers online initially and I have just left it. Every now and again I eye it warily in the hall as I leave the house and thing WTF?!
Scarily I don't think I actually know how to turn the heating off when summer arrives, I will need to do some serious reading of the manual Sad

Purpleknickers · 24/01/2014 23:35

member I have a carbon monoxide detector too mug that I am

HauntedNoddyCar · 24/01/2014 23:35

But for 20 quid you can buy a lovely programmable thermostat which allows you to have lots of settings. It lets us have weekday and weekend settings with about 4 different programs for each. For 200 quid there's probably one that gives you a cuddle if you're chilly.

I thought I was missing something but it seems not.

WhenSheWasBadSheWasExhausted · 24/01/2014 23:41

I'm so glad it's not just me baffled by this advert.

purple I don't know how to use our overly complicated bastarding digital twat of a thermostat either.

DollyTwat · 24/01/2014 23:44

theZeeTeam no you wouldn't, because you'd have known it was a hot night and turned off your heating accordingly, or, you'd just open a window
Never ever on a night out have you ever thought about your heating arrangements UNLESS you were bored
I don't think about mine when I'm at home

Mellowandfruitful · 24/01/2014 23:45

Surely even if you're a spontaneous weekend mini-break type, prone to whisking your parrot off to Milan at the drop of a hat, you still have to go home first to pick up your passport, at which point you could turn your heating onto minimum? Confused

DollyTwat · 24/01/2014 23:46

Or if you were that geeky and showing your -bored- mates that 'look I've turned the heating up into house THAT IM NOT IN'

omuwalamulungi · 24/01/2014 23:54

I hate this advert so much but it obviously sticks because I am always singing the fucking annoying song in my head.

Omg it's like soooo random etc.

wobblyweebles · 25/01/2014 02:29

Would I be able to switch the heat up without getting off the sofa?

Sounds quite tempting. My feet are cold ATM...

CarlaVeloso · 25/01/2014 02:47

Why is it annoying? Some people like a warm house, others don't care. Same with a lot of things - if you've got 200 quid to spare - go for it.

AllThoseDirtyWords · 25/01/2014 03:10

Oh I am so pleased it is not just me that thinks this ad makes no sense!

HotPanda · 25/01/2014 05:20

We've got one. (Not hive, but another brand)

We holiday a fair amount in winter months. DH insists on turning the heating off while we are away which means it takes a good day for the house to warm up again. With this, we switch the heating on when we land, and by the time we get home 4 hours later it is much warmer. But then I'm arthritic so warmth is really high on my list of priorities.

I appreciate it is a "luxury item" though. We don't use it day-to-day. That is what the timer is for!

MammaTJ · 25/01/2014 05:34

I could have written the OP! I do agree with you and am always shouting at the tv!!

Plateofcrumbs · 25/01/2014 06:18

We're getting this installed next week! I hadn't seen the advert at the time, which does a really poor job of selling it.

We're not exactly "spontaneous mini breakers" but our schedules vary quite a lot, so being able to easily change the heating settings to suit sounds great, as does idea we can leave the heating off and just turn it back on shortly before we're due home, rather than heating an empty house. Supposedly it could pay fir itself over a couple of winters, but think DH would be happy to spend £200 just for the gadget-factor!
