Just that really.

And I'm talking about every kind of situation.

I deal with customers every single day - some are lovely and some even wish death on you, but I would never comment about them (or colleagues for that matter) even if I never mentioned their name over FB.

So what about my school employer which has its own FB and twitter account because thats how parents like to be contacted?

At odds with the LA line that all social media is bad and all employees shall not have it under pain of death

Again, very difficult, even though this si London, every TA and teacher has cross taught or had their own child in every other school in the borough - it is impossible to avoid 'cross contamination'.

I work on the theory that I cant be sued for what I write, then it's ok!

Whilst I think we've all agreed that teachers shouldn't comment about specific students, I find the comments that basically imply that teachers should be held to different standards than anyone else puzzling. I have just as much right to talk to my university and school friends as anyone else.

I am new to FE teaching... and have just deleted all posts that referred to work! Just in case.

I have childminder "friends" who comment negatively about children in their care on fb. It is awful. Yes, yes! I will unfriend them!

OP, YANBU.

I didn't think that teachers should be FB friends with pupils and parents. I have a good friend who is a teacher at my daughters' school. When my kids move up to seniors (where she teaches) we will probably unfriend each other on FB. We're in touch in other ways so it won't be a problem.

Other that the yay glad it's Friday or oh no Monday again type posts I don't think it's a good idea or indeed, professional, to post about work.
