To not mind paying the TV licence fee?

There's been quite a lot of good TV over the 4 BBC channels and I relish a film on BBC without ads. Per day it isn't much too pay and I'd rather pay the BBC than Sky. Am I alone?

Shitehawke · 25/01/2014 09:21

Let me guess nenny, you believe in the detector vans???

LtEveDallas · 25/01/2014 09:31

Detector Vans

But actually, it's a lot easier than that. Anyone that sells you a TV has to report your address to the TV Licensing Authority. Sky, Virgin and BT have to report your address to the TV Licensing Authority.

I know when I cancel mine to move they will chase and chase me, as they did when I moved from a house to Military accn (before we had to pay) and when I moved from UK to Germany and Cyprus.

I'm gonna take a chance on it when I move this time, but I've no doubt they will do their damnedest to catch me.

flatmum · 25/01/2014 09:32

They can only prosecute you if you let them in and answer their questions, so yes, it is unenforceable.

Bear in mind it's run by Capita.

LtEveDallas · 25/01/2014 09:37

Ooh Capita, didn't know that. In that case I'm definately taking the chance!

Crowler · 25/01/2014 09:40

I love BBC. I love the Iplayer, I watch everything on it.

sashh · 25/01/2014 09:51

Shitehawke

In the 1980s the majority of female prisoners were there for not paying their TV licence.

nennypops · 25/01/2014 09:51

No, flatmum, if you think you can escape prosecution that easily, you are I am afraid being very naive.

nennypops · 25/01/2014 09:52

Why do people think it's clever to break the law anyway?

Shitehawke · 25/01/2014 09:57

Lol. Detector vans are a myth! The idiots who think they have to let in the inspectors deserve everything they get. Mumsnetters perpetuating the lies from tvl are brainwashed fools.

How many court summons are from detector van evidence??? ZERO. That's not real they are.

flatmum · 25/01/2014 10:17

Double lol. I am not naive. The 1000s of people who are prosecuted are prosecuted because they open the door and admit they have a tv and let some oily bloke from capita with no legal powers of entry whatsoever in to hav a look. All you have to say is I withdraw your implied right of entry, get lost. They can, if they can be bothered (unlikely) get a warrant an come back with a police officer but by then, anyone watching live bbc without a licence would have bought one.

I am not saying it's clever nor passing judgement about whether people should pay the bbc licence so they can pay people's excessive salaries. I am pointing out that it is legally unenforceable as they have no legal right when they turn up to enter your property.

I know all this because I was hounded for 2 years by a weasely man from capita who refused to believe I didn't have a tv (I didn't). We got off on the wrong foot when he came round the day we moved in (looking for his commision of course) and proffered a visa debit machine on the doorstep and said can you go and get your husband to pay the tv licence. He also sen a van round to lurk outside the house. One time I went out to the shops and a walk with the buggy and went out the back way. When I came back up the street the 2 blokes sitting in the back with the doors open enjoying the sun and reading the paper had to quickly leap out and shut the doors - not before I could see that it was completely empty of course!

Whether people want to pay or not is up to them but I do wish people on here would stop perpetuating nonsense about the powes of some retired guy earning pin money at capita to make you.

Shitehawke · 25/01/2014 10:41

Every single TV license thread has the same idiotic crap spouted by the brainwashed masses. I am stunned at the statements of some that even having a laptop of iPhone means you must have a license Shock or the detector van will pull up, put a bag over your head and waterboard you until you confess.

Fluffy40 · 25/01/2014 10:48

Totally worth it for news coverage, Wimbledon, and some excellent comedy thrown in

BABaracus · 25/01/2014 11:00

I also think the tv licence is a bargain. Would pay it for radio 4 alone.

glasgowsteven · 25/01/2014 11:04

I have not had a tv licence for over ten years..... They came to the door once. No right of entry....

Police with a warrant have that right, not capita emoloyees

glasgowsteven · 25/01/2014 11:06

Nenny tv licence is not a law.

It's not an act or parprliqment,

How would you like being told you must buy the guardian before buying the sun.......

Salbertina · 25/01/2014 11:20

Great bargain!! Should see the crap we get overseas!

Nancy66 · 25/01/2014 11:27

Having lived in both the US and Australia I am more than happy to keep the BBC commercial free.

Even our commercial channels are quite tightly controlled at the moment but, I think, if the BBC started accepting advertising then it would be a free for all. With a show like Sherlock you'd end up with 9 mins of broadcast followed by 4 mins of commercials.

Sallystyle · 25/01/2014 11:38

Worth it for EE, Casualty and Holby Grin

harrietspy · 25/01/2014 11:42

I have no problem with the TV licence.

I love the BBC. It's flawed, of course, and has made massive mistakes (cf Jimmy Saville), but the main reason why I'm more than happy to pay the licence fee is that it means BBC isn't influenced by advertising revenue. They can develop content based on artistic and editorial decisions rather than whether or not the content will attract - and be approved of by - advertisers

Kaekae · 25/01/2014 11:49

I resent paying. I have Sky. I would rather have adverts because then I can just Sky + what I want to watch and fast forward the adverts!

specialsubject · 25/01/2014 13:06

shitehawke hope you don't watch anything live on any device. If you do, you are a crook. No, they don't have right of entry, but those who won't pay for watching stuff live and get on their high horses about this need a good kicking.

try TV abroad for REAL crap.

gordyslovesheep · 25/01/2014 13:08

worth it for The Bridge alone - never mind Doctor Who Grin

Crowler · 25/01/2014 13:10

We're watching the Bridge right now. Love it.

Shitehawke · 25/01/2014 13:38

Ah, but until they prove I am guilty then the law says I'm innocent. So, until that day, I guess I'll just do what I like. Unless the BBC are above their law? Their letters seem to imply that I am not entitled to due process????

catwithflowers · 25/01/2014 13:42

I hardly watch telly but listen to radio 4 a lot and the things I do watch are on BBC, esp BBC4. I am happy to pay my licence fee. Worth it for Borgen and the Bridge alone!! Smile
