To think doughnuts should be covered in caster sugar, NOT icing sugar.

Really fancied a jam doughnut today so I popped into the local bakers. They have changed their doughnuts so that they are dusted in icing sugar instead of caster sugar.

Surely this is completely wrong! It makes them far too soft rather than having that little crunch. They also seem to taste strange like that.

AIBU to be a bit disappointed I couldn't have my jam doughnut- the cherry Danish was nice but not as satisfying as a doughnut. The other local shops only sell doughnuts in packs of five and I couldn't eat that many that may be a lie.

Caster sugar without a doubt. Oh I could really go a fresh jam doughnut or five right now!

I haven't had a decent doughnut in years, nowhere seems to sell nice ones any more.

Actually do Starbucks still do their glazed old fashioned lumpy ones? They were lovely (when they were fresh).

One of my favourite computer games ever was Rocknor's Donut Factory. It was an enjoyable puzzle game but the fact that it was about doughnuts really made it.

SugarMiceInTheRain · 24/01/2014 12:34

Oops sorry for the multiple post. I do love doughnuts though! Grin

MadIsTheNewNormal · 24/01/2014 12:36

YANBU.

The classic British jam doughnut rolled in caster sugar is the best and I have no time for any other forrin style usurpers and upstarts in the doughnut world.

BigBirthdayGloom · 24/01/2014 12:39

Yadnbu!!!! Doughnuts rolled in caster sugar=sublime treat. Doughnuts rolled in icing sugar=pointless waste of calories.

I took the baby out in the pram to get him to nap. Somehow we we ended up in the bakery at Sainsburys. I simply can't understand how that would happen.

WallyBantersJunkBox · 24/01/2014 16:19

I think sadly the donut ombudsman would declare that the original jam filled donut (known here as the Berliner) is actually coated with icing sugar and that our version is a scam that came later.

The jam is also much cheaper in a UK donut compared to the original - it took awhile to get used to the fruits of the forest type jam used in the traditional Berliner doesn't stop me ramming one whole into my gob though, oh no!

Bedsheets4knickers · 24/01/2014 16:51

Hmmm custard donuts hmmmmm

EarSlaps · 24/01/2014 16:54

YANBU These things are important in life. Icing sugar on doughnuts is just wrong

AlwaysDancing1234 · 24/01/2014 17:25

Happy days, DS was well enough for us to pop to local Tesco for some essential shopping and a pack of donuts accidentally fell in to my basket as I approached the checkout... Grin

Please explain doughnuts to me! They taste awful, give me a nice iced finger or iced Chelsea bun. x

Lidl do lovely donuts. Caster sugar for me.

notimetotidy · 24/01/2014 17:59

I have, this afternoon, eaten two caster sugar covered GRAVY RINGS (none of this round doughnut nonsense) and two yum yums. I have only just discovered yum yums and they are gorgeous. I now feel sick and can't eat any tea.

addictedtosugar · 24/01/2014 18:50

Gravy rings??? as in the brown stuff you might put on a roast dinner?????

Nope, yum yums have glace icing on. Needs to be powdered icing sugar (I said further upthread YABU, no need to repeat it Grin )

MrsArthurWellesley · 24/01/2014 18:59

No OP, just the ordinary raspberry kind. I don't think I'd like black currant ones.
london dh wasted years of his life not liking doughnuts. He's been making up for lost time ever since Wink

TheRealAmandaClarke · 24/01/2014 19:08

YANBU
Proper donuts (from a bakery/ donut van etc) are covered with caster sugar.
Fake dense, yucky donuts (from a petrol statio) are covered with icing sugar.
Where are the food police when you need them?

FamiliesShareGerms · 24/01/2014 19:10

YANBU. It's an American thing, I think. It took me years to work out how the grandmother put poison on the doughnuts in Flowers in the Attic.

Gravy rings are what you call ring doughnuts. In NI they are gravy rings - absolutely no idea why because they are always cooked in fat and are never put anywhere near gravy. Smile

addictedtosugar · 24/01/2014 19:51

Phew. I was worried..
