...allow their bog standard, nothing out of the ordinary, cat/dog/whatever to have babies. Angry

With so many animals who can't find a good home wtf are people doing breeding more of them?

I personally believe many issues can be solved if it were mandatory to have a license for breeding yet more animals.

Sorry if I sound aggressive, but I hate this fashionable breed crap!

toboldlygo · 21/01/2014 19:46

I work in the animal care industry and I am shocked and appalled every single day by the things people do to their animals in the name of £££. Poor or even just ignorant breeding practices cause so much more pain and suffering than the backyard breeders ever know about.

Joysmum · 21/01/2014 19:46

How about there being a mandatory register where the breeder can be traced and if one of their animals is homeless, they should be fined/forced to contribute to rehoming costs/destruction costs. Maybe forcing the breeders to take responsibility would help?

I definitely agree but we've had 3 dogs over the years separately. 2 mongrels and 1 pedigree. Can you guess which one was untrainable and aggressive??

Sparklingbrook · 21/01/2014 19:52

Me too Where all this Cockerpoo/Labradoodle stuff. Hmm

LittleBabyPigsus · 21/01/2014 19:56

YANBU. Spaying and neutering needs to be mandatory for pet ownership IMO unless you are a licensed breeder (and so licenses for breeders need introducing). I do know some very responsible (cat) hobby breeders who don't do it for profit and just do it for the love of the breed, the cats are very well looked-after. Sadly they are in the minority and even they say that rescued cats should be the priority for someone looking for a new pet.

Wherediparkmybroom · 21/01/2014 19:56

If you want a handbag dog, go to a rescue there are loads waiting....
Want a labradoodle give it six months...
There will be loads of them!
Want a dog.....
Pick up the phone book and ring a shelter, be honest about your circumstances and needs and likely they will have a dog!
DO NOT BUY ONE

LittleBabyPigsus · 21/01/2014 19:57

Where and Sparkling the poodle crossbreeds are because they are hypoallergenic - poodles don't shed. So they actually have a purpose!

Wherediparkmybroom · 21/01/2014 19:58

They breed two breeds often mongrels and sell them on the idea of the breeds characteristics, it's what used to be called a mongrel, but there are new fashions every month!

Wherediparkmybroom · 21/01/2014 20:00

All dogs shed to an extent if not clipped, all dogs are prone to fleas unless housebound, all dogs can get worms, all dogs will bite a doc if really backed into a corner!
If you can not deal with this don't get a dog!

MidniteScribbler · 21/01/2014 20:02

I actually agree with this, and have been lobbying for it here in Australia. As a registered breeder, part of the contract I have with any puppy buyer is that I remain second contact on the microchip for life. I would like to see it legally required that breeders remain on the microchip and if the dog is handed in to the pound or rescue that the breeder must take responsibility for it or pay a fee. Good breeders would take their dog back in a heartbeat, poor ones may start rethinking their activities if it starts impacting their hip pocket.

desertmum · 21/01/2014 20:02

the shelters are full of pedigrees needing homes, there is no need to breed. If you want a hypoallergenic dog get a poodle not a labradoodle - have you seen how big those things can get ? They are like mutants. The problem is that the hypoallergenic thing will be reduced due to the gene spread. Everyone should neuter their animals - not just to reduce the numbers of unwanted cats and dogs and horses etc. but also because neutering has proven health benefits to the animal. And animals don't know they can't have off spring, they have no emotional feeling of 'oh I would love a litter'.

toboldlygo · 21/01/2014 20:03

Little - Poodles may not shed but the crossbreeds often do and no dog is truly hypoallergenic, people are often allergic to the dander and saliva rather than just fur.

Wherediparkmybroom · 21/01/2014 20:04

If you are allergic a dog is not for you, my mum feels that they are not for her! To be honest if you were allergic to peanuts would you put pistachios on the shopping list?

CeliaFate · 21/01/2014 20:04

It amazes me that a cross breed can fetch up to £2000! Labradoodles are essentially a mongrel, aren't they?

MidniteScribbler · 21/01/2014 20:05

poodle crossbreeds are because they are hypoallergenic - poodles don't shed. So they actually have a purpose!

They have no purpose. Breeding a breed that sheds to a breed that doesn't shed is not going to guarantee the offspring will not shed. You've got equal chance of the offspring getting either coat. If you want a dog that doesn't shed, then why not pick from one of the many breeds available that have a non-shedding coat, with documented health clearances from a reputable breeder? At least then you can be sure of what you're getting.

DramaAlpaca · 21/01/2014 20:07

Agree with you 100% OP.

Wherediparkmybroom · 21/01/2014 20:08

2000 for a mongrel!!!!!!!
Dog probably lovley but time needed to help with earlier owner
GO TO BATTERSEA unless you have something to hide at home.

Happydaze77 · 21/01/2014 20:18

I agree with the op.

It's a huge problem with small animals. Some stupid rabbit owners think it would be nice to have a litter of cute fluffy baby rabbits and then don't realise that the breeding doe is fertile again immediately after giving birth, and her young are capable of breeding after just a few weeks. Cue some very desperate local ads and another knock on the door for the local animal shelter.

Sad
Wherediparkmybroom · 21/01/2014 20:27

I took on a Gunuie pig went out to find six small wet pigs found homes eventually !

Nataleejah · 21/01/2014 20:27

Adopting pets from shelters can be very very difficult -- i understand they need to make sure that animals go to good homes, but they can get soooo discriminative. :(

Sparklingbrook · 21/01/2014 20:30

in what way Nataleejah?

Wherediparkmybroom · 21/01/2014 20:30

Inflammatory beware!!!!!

If you could be offered a child, born to good parents, ready for a new home, sleep trained, partially toilet trained...

Would you take it on on would you report to ss?

How good is a pedegree?

Wherediparkmybroom · 21/01/2014 20:32

Nataleejah. All they check is that you have the space, not intrusive!

LEMmingaround · 21/01/2014 20:33

But what about breeding of pedigree dogs? Are they more valuable and worthy than "ordinary" dogs? oh and don't even get me started about designer breeds with stupid names.

Want a nice dog that doesn't moult? a poodle will do nicely
