eruptive lingual papillitis (bumps on tongue)

ditsydoll · 20/01/2014 21:14

Dd started with a sore tongue and then got bumps on the tip of her tongue, a week later I got them, then Dh and then Mil..
Just a sore tongue, pinhead ulcers or swollen tastebuds at the tip.
Dr said it was bacterial? I wasn't so convinced so I went back, now it's aptheous ulcers? Still not convinced.
I'm certain it's eruptive lingual papillitis, but there seems to be no cure or even research as to what causes it so pointless going back to gp?
Anyone had this?

P.s I posted in health and got no response and thought I might get more traffic here..

This is basically what it is.

Pimples on Tongue in Children

When children develop pimples on tongue it may not be the same as in case of adults. In adults the condition is Transient Lingual Papillitis while in kids it is Eruptive Lingual Papillitis. The symptoms of both the conditions are similar. The difference is that Eruptive Lingual Papillitis is contagious. This condition usually affects children when they are approx 5 years old. There is not sufficient information on Pimples on tongue in children. Due to its contagious nature experts believe that the condition is rather an infection.

Is it any better? Never heard of it myself but I have a couple painful ulcer/bumps on my tongue at the moment and it makes eating and talking a real bitch!

ditsydoll · 21/01/2014 20:01

No better yet.. they dissapear and reappear daily. It's a mystery!

We had this for a few months over the summer, my daughter had it at first then myself and dh realised we both had it too, kept coming and going for weeks at a time but seems to have stopped now.

don't think there is anything you can do, but i do sympathize, it drove us mad, such a small thing but when you have multiple spots on your tongue all the time its pretty uncomfortable

LucilleBluth · 21/01/2014 21:03

Yes, we had this. I had it and gave to DH and DS1. It eventually went away without treatment but it left me feeling run down and I'm convinced it did something to my immune system, I got frequent colds and cold sores for a year after, it seems to have died down now.

ditsydoll · 21/01/2014 21:55

Sorry to hear you've been run down with it but glad someone else has experienced this.. was starting to think it would never go away!
Lucille did u ever get cold sores before you had this virus?

OP posts:
ditsydoll · 21/01/2014 21:58

Yeah it's more a discomfort than pain jenecho.. it was painful at first but just seems to be mild pain now.
I have a 7 month old ds do either of you know if it's dangerous for him? We have all avoided kissing him but I would imagine if Dh and I have caught it that it's probably airbourne?

I used to get this/mouth ulcers often. I always used Anbesol, it stopped the pain and seemed to get rid of the problem fairly quickly. HTH

kali110 · 21/01/2014 22:36

Can you get them around mouth and down throat also?? V

ditsydoll · 22/01/2014 08:51

Not around the mouth I think its just the papilla on the tip of the tongue.

Doc years ago said chronic mouth ulcers and made le gargle with anti biotics which always cleared them up but doc now is saying viral infection and that pills wont work. Well theyve always worked the last few years!!!

I know this thread is old but for what its worth I'm sure I've just had this! Two weeks ago my 15 month old was not herself at all, drooling, whining, not eating or sleeping very well and she had a little sore in the corner of her mouth. I didn't notice her tongue really and she can't talk and tell me if it hurts but last week my tongue started to hurt. At first I thought I must have burnt it on something as that is how it felt but as time went on and it got more irritating I started to google and found this thread. I have very small bumps on just the tip of my tongue and an uncomfortable burning sensation. I'm on day 10 now and its only JUST starting to get better. Weirdest illness we've ever had! Am now just waiting for my older two to complain about sore tongues. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/14996101

I used Home Remedies for lie bump, you can try as well here it is wellnessbells.com/lie-bump-tongue/

suzuk · 06/11/2018 17:57

Did the condition go away? I had a week of it and so did my partner. I think that my 1 year old son did too. Mine got better for a couple of weeks but the eruptive/familial lingual papillitis returned. I'm into day 5 of the second bout. I hate it.

Alllyb · 07/11/2018 14:27

so glad to come across others with this.. i have had this since may... it goes away for a couple of days then comes back. raised red bumps end of tongue making mouth burn... drs and dentist no idea.. tried fungal treatment but not helped... anyone any breakthrough with getting this to go away... it started after i burnt my tongue badly..but i also had shingles at the start of the year so not sure what started it?? my 5 yr old has complained of small sore bits on her tongue so I'm worried its infectious....

waddlemyway · 21/12/2018 10:37

Aaaghhhh we have this too, apparently it is doing the rounds among the children at nursery, but it has taken me until now to figure out what it is! DD2 had a sore mouth, I just thought she was teething. Then I burnt my tongue. And after five days of us both being in misery I realised it must be something different, but what the heck was it? It's hard to google as I just keep getting hand, foot and mouth, which it isn't.

If ditsydoll's third post above is correct, then hopefully it is not contagious among adults, just the we'ans. On day eight now. The worst is over but it doesn't seem to be shifting entirely. Pharmacist gave me betadine to wash/gargle with diluted three times a day. DD2 seems better, which is good as I can't get any get or anything in her mouth. DD1 says she has a sore mouth but it doesn't seem as bad. Yet. Fingers crossed it stays that way.

On the plus side, I have lost a kilo. Silver linings.

GrainOfSalt · 21/12/2018 11:05

Well I know this is a zombie thread but I am glad someone bumped it! I've had this coming and going for the last 6 weeks or so and thought my oral health had just gone to pot. There is light at the end of the tunnel. Grin

Luis85698 · 21/02/2019 06:58

I have had it for 4 weeks now , my brother lives with me and he also has the same symptoms , but also had chills , never a real fever , the burning sensation at the tip of the tongue drives me crazy . I also read that it is a very relative new disease discovered in 1996 , I hope this go away

Jenniferforjac · 03/09/2019 21:43

I’m so pleased I found this thread! I’ve suffered with this on and off for the last six months and both my kids have had it a few times too. I’ve been trying to work out what it is for ages!! I seem to get it at least once a month and the only thing I’ve found to help is Peroxyl by Colgate. Salt water made it 10 times worse!! Anyone found out what causes it to reoccur so much? Or any other treatments? It drives me mad because I keep getting it, but have no idea why! Definitely seems contagious as the first time the boys had it, they passed it to me and DH.

GrandmistressGlitch · 29/10/2019 20:49

@Jenniferforjac gaah it's so annoying, I hope it has gone for you?! I have had it since the end of September, the lesions pop up for a few days, disappear then reappear somewhere else! Any tips? For something so small it's bafflingly painful and seemingly endless.

Jenniferforjac · 30/10/2019 09:20

@GrandmistressGlitch only to avoid really vinegary crisps and other foods that seem to set it off! Sharp fresh tomatoes do as well! That seems to have helped and I use the mouthwash as soon as a flare up starts! Good luck xx
