eruptive lingual papillitis (bumps on tongue)

ditsydoll · 20/01/2014 21:14

Dd started with a sore tongue and then got bumps on the tip of her tongue, a week later I got them, then Dh and then Mil..
Just a sore tongue, pinhead ulcers or swollen tastebuds at the tip.
Dr said it was bacterial? I wasn't so convinced so I went back, now it's aptheous ulcers? Still not convinced.
I'm certain it's eruptive lingual papillitis, but there seems to be no cure or even research as to what causes it so pointless going back to gp?
Anyone had this?

P.s I posted in health and got no response and thought I might get more traffic here..

@Jenniferforjac thanks! Will try the mouthwash and hope it goes away soon for all of us

Hi, just came across this post and am starting to think this is what I have. Had it 5 days now with sore and inflamed tip of my tongue along with inflamed looking taste buds. Very uncomfortable to eat and just generally making me feel.miserable. how long can I expect it to last and when does it start to feel better? Scared it's not going to go away! 😔

jethrok · 10/04/2020 07:23

My wife and I have had this now for about a week, it's driving us nuts! We had assumed our son was just teething again but then we both noticed these exact symptoms within hours of each other. I hope it goes away soon!

I have this going on right now and it’s been almost 2 weeks! I can barely sleep at night :( Has anyone found a real diagnosis and best treatment? Thank you in advance!

BrowniesAreSuper · 04/01/2021 18:57

Seems this thread pops up periodically. We seem to have this in our house now. Mine's so so bad today! Even talking hurts because of where the bumps are. And eating... not pleasant. Really hope it doesn't keep returning. Anybody able to offer any light at the end of the tunnel? @Ham2eggs maybe? :(

Poyntz19 · 05/11/2021 23:13

What a horrid condition this is. I had never heard of transient or eruptive lingual papillitis until I googled the symptoms but it’s definitely what I have (and I’m a doctor!) 😹
Have had it a week and now DH has just started with it. LO has been off food and not himself of late. I’m relying on benzocaine anaesthetic throat spray and codeine as that is all that helps. No cure, just got to battle through it.

I think I have this :-(
DD first complained of sore tongue then I got it the next day. She seemed better quickly but I still have it 10 days later. Seeing the dentist next week.
I never thought it was contagious I thought it might have been something we both ate but maybe I did catch it from her

Justputitdown · 04/05/2023 20:47

Oh Lord, I've got this and it's driving me totally frantic. The idea that it reoccurs is not a happy one.

LittleG77 · 05/05/2023 06:54

Hi @Justputitdown mine seems to have gone now but it's taken 4 weeks. Saw the dentist (doctor won't see you for tongue problems) but unfortunately my appointment was on a day when it wasn't too bad so dentist just said there's nothing wrong and you just had ulcers.
Mouthwash and brushing teeth did seem to help, salt water definitely didn't help and salty food also made it worse. Hope that helps x

Justputitdown · 05/05/2023 11:19

@LittleG77 thank you so much. A month!!! Mine is a little better today but my toddler is absolutely miserable with it and another four weeks and then recurrent bouts sounds hellish.

LittleG77 · 27/05/2023 14:22

Still have this on and off :-(

ChildrenOfTheQuorn · 27/05/2023 17:56

Mouthwash definitely helped me.

Justputitdown · 27/05/2023 18:02

Touch wood, mine cleared after a week and hasn't returned.

Maztek · 12/06/2023 20:52

I have this currently it’s so painful. I’ve had them on and off most of my life but never more than a day. I’ve had it for a few days now. Never realised they could be contagious, my sim definitely had them last week!

Jessiepuff · 17/01/2024 13:55

Hi mums. I had this first and it was so painful! It lasted way longer than google said for Transient Lingual Papillitis (3 days), the pain was worse at night it was agony. Then my husband got it, he lost his taste. Altogether it was about 5-6 days of lots of pain and gone in 2 weeks. My daughter got it too and we thought she got tonsillitis as her tonsils were enlarged so the doctors put her on penicillin. It calmed it down but the moment she stopped it the bumps flared right up and is extremely sore for her. We went back to the doctor and he said it's viral and to wait. I feel so sorry for her because it's so so painful. Does anyone know what this is?? I didn't know it's contagious!!

LittleG77 · 17/01/2024 19:50

Hi @Jessiepuff my doctor didn’t know what it was but gave me a steroid spray. I’m not sure it did much. I think it started as a virus caught from my daughter, but it seemed to just make my tongue really sensitive so I got the lumps for about 4 months on and off. Eventually it went completely when I avoided everything salty or spicey for a couple of weeks

Rainbow233 · 09/06/2025 20:58

Came on to say that this has hit our household. Ds2 had it first then me and my OH and then Ds1 had it. It’ll be 3 weeks on Thursday and it’s still coming and going. We’ve also been hit with another cold which isn’t helping matters but it’s driving me crazy. Started with a burnt feeling on my tongue. Followed by a loss of taste. Then various swollen taste buds that come and go but they’re definitely not ulcers.
