Fondue is still relevant!

Myself and my Bf are having a discussion, I want to serve fondue at the next house party. Bf thinks fondue is not trendy antmore, is food for stoners and provides no sustenance. My argument is cheese and bread is perfect comfort food.

Who's being unreasonable?

I have a cheese fondue on my birthday every year and as often as I can get away with it in between. Love it!

motherinferior · 17/01/2014 14:20

What's wrong with food for stoners anyway?

WitchWay · 17/01/2014 14:23

Great idea esp as no-one will have had it for ages

Fondue… mmmm Smile

NigellasDealer · 17/01/2014 14:23

personally i find fondue kind of yucky

NigellasDealer · 17/01/2014 14:24

and charity shops are full of used-once fondue sets....there is no excuse at all for serving fondue unless you are Swiss.

theDudesmummy · 17/01/2014 14:32

Since when did food need to be relevant? I adore fondue. Many fun parties we have had with two meat fondues and two cheese fondues on the go, lots of people and lots of wine (yes, I have a lot of fondue pots!). It is sociable, fun and delicious (and if you don't eat the bread it's low carb too, which IS relevant to me!)

5Foot5 · 17/01/2014 16:53

Slightly off-topic, but I knew someone once who put this one their wedding present list but misspelt fondue as fondle - causing much speculation and raising of eyebrows among the guests.

theDudesmummy · 17/01/2014 17:05

I have known fondles at fondues....

CMOTDibbler · 17/01/2014 17:08

I love fondue, and when in the US like to go to the Melting Pot restaurants where you can do 3 courses of fondue (meat, cheese and chocolate)

nickymanchester · 17/01/2014 17:11

Bf thinks fondue is ... food for stoners

Shock

I've never heard this before.

Does that mean all the times that my parents had a fondue back in the 70s that they were actually taking something else?

Is this why a fondue set was always so popular on the conveyor belt on the Generation Game?

I haven't had a fondue in about five years but this talk has made me think about it. Can anyone recommend any good recipes, I know you really need specific types of cheese to do it properly?

most of you are actually being sarcastic and the 70s alpine references are jokes at my expense

My reading of those posts was totally the opposite. I would suggest that it was more of a nostalgic humour at something we remember from our childhood.

But, honestly, I've never heard about fondue being food for stoners. Is that a recent thing?

NymodigFruOla · 17/01/2014 17:12

I once did a cheese fondue for Christmas lunch many years ago.

One of our friends doesn't eat meat; so we did a smoked salmon starter, an absolute vat of cheese fondue as the main course and Christmas pudding for dessert!

Pippilangstrompe · 17/01/2014 17:15

A friend invited me to a fondue party last week. First one I have been invited to in years. Fondue is coming back!

So tell her you are not out of date, you are avant garde.

SolomanDaisy · 17/01/2014 17:16

Yum, I would definitely come!

diddl · 17/01/2014 17:31

Sounds fab-melted cheese & wine-what's not to like!

Haven't had one for years, although I seem to remember the heating thingy being smelly.

Love a raclette though-& I think that that's tomorrows lunch sorted out!

winklewoman · 17/01/2014 17:40

5foot5, yes we break an egg in at the end, in fact last night at the restaurant we were given two, very eggy and cheesey indeed.

Reality · 17/01/2014 17:43

Oh my god I NEED to have a raclette in my life. Whyhave I never heard of this wonder?

nickymanchester · 17/01/2014 17:50

If anyone's interested there's a Heston recipe here:-

QueenofKelsingra · 17/01/2014 17:51

you absolutely do reality it is fab!! (although all the yummy melted cheese is not great for the diet!!)

EmmaBemma · 17/01/2014 18:06

I have fond (ho ho) memories of fondue for an occasional treat when I was growing up. Mum made it with a pound of gruyere, pound of emmental, white wine (can't remember how much), clove of garlic and a splash of kirsch. It was bloody lovely. But although I do have a fondue set, I've never really been moved to make it in adulthood. Perhaps I should remedy this.

Have never tried the other variants - meat in oil, and so on. It's all about the cheese for me.

Pollywallywinkles · 17/01/2014 18:23

Fondue is lovely every now and again. We have it every New Year's Eve with sausage, apple and bread. Lovely.

Go for it.

Tweenangst · 17/01/2014 18:25

Had fondue tonight as it goes, but I live in Switzerland so far more popular out here.

1974rach · 17/01/2014 18:27

Go for itGrin

Fondue is a right laugh and damn yummy!

ShowMeYourTARDIS · 17/01/2014 18:29

I love fondue! It's always relevant. ;)

But only if it's boozeless. I don't like alcohol at all and it doesn't get any better combined with cheese.

flatmum · 17/01/2014 18:31

Haha I love fondue. And raclette. I think it is due a massive comeback.

FurryDogMother · 17/01/2014 18:35

Fondue is food of the gods. It will never be irrelevant. Best ever thing to do is to keep a little bowl of kirsch on the table - dip your bread in it before dipping into the cheese (has to be Emmenthal and Gruyere) and experience superheated alcohol bready cheese mouthful :)

As for the stoner thing - I have never tried magic mushrooms in a fondue, oh no, not me :)
