It is freezing in my Sainsburys! It can't be very energy efficient either. Do things really need to be kept that cold?

I hate it in the summer when I'm brave enough to wear summer clothes, then go and freeze my arse off in the chilled aisles in Tescos...

I stare at the staff, with their fleeces and gloves with pure envy

persimmon · 17/01/2014 13:36

I used to work in Sainsburys and dreaded being given the chiller aisles to do. It was sooooo cold. Nowadays they give the staff fleeces, I see.

Mintyy · 17/01/2014 13:50

And, while we're at it, aibu to think the Sainsbury's maroon fleeces are the most hideous supermarket uniform ever?

I thought the Pingo Doce uniforms were so nice when I was in Portugal last year. Black trousers, white cotton shirt, and a smart green cotton apron over. No nasty polyester anywhere.

And it wasn't so insanely cold in there, despite 35 degree heat outside!

I know, perhaps I should move to Portugal

There was a newspaper article about this a while ago - can't remember who was coldest out of the Big 4, but Aldi and Lidl were warmest, because they put their stuff in closed freezers which you open rather than open freezers.

I dread it as well though - I have even stood away from the chillers and sent DP for whatever we need Grin

MinesAPintOfTea · 17/01/2014 13:58

If you want easy-access open fridges/freezers then that's what will happen, the fridge is trying to chill the whole shop. Its energy inefficient enough without trying to make the aisle warmer.

WhereIsMyHat · 17/01/2014 14:00

Yes! It's the worst in the summer when you're scantily clad yet the fridges are Baltic. I remember this from being young too.

Mintyy · 17/01/2014 14:02

Well, I always hurry through the chilled aisles, can't wait to get out of there and warmed up.

I'm not talking about freezers by the way.

I'm talking about the fresh food aisles.

It is freezing and it always sets my raynauds off. On the positive side for us it cuts down on our shopping bill as I never linger and browse.

I've seen in some european stores chill rooms where all of the cold stuff is housed. stops the cold escaping and must lower the bills. However I have to run through those rooms so I get even less shopping done!

There must be a way of designing it so the cold doesnt escape somehow - force fields or summat (when they get invented!)

LetsFaceTheMusicAndDance · 17/01/2014 15:00

What you need Mintyy is internet shopping. You need never darken their chilled aisles again.

TicTacZebra · 17/01/2014 15:02

YANBU. I always take a hoddie when I go shopping. Even in summer.

flatpackhamster · 17/01/2014 15:23

And yet if they weren't, we'd be seeing "AIBU to take these frozen vegetables back because they defrosted on the way home".

Sparklingbrook · 17/01/2014 15:24

Does anyone remember Kwik Save where you actually walked into a big fridge through the plastic strips?

Echocave · 17/01/2014 15:26

Yes we need a nice Per Una waterfall cardie to keep is warm!!
Agree that m and s seems to be blooming cold round here. But do agree that during horror sweaty moments last summer, I often dawdled unnecessarily next to the chilled desserts section...

GlitzAndGiggles · 17/01/2014 15:28

I work in 0-5% for 8 hours a day so don't really notice :)

GlitzAndGiggles · 17/01/2014 15:29

0-5 degrees even! Ffs

ddubsgirl · 19/01/2014 15:02

try working in it Sad im on counters so part of chilled section but we arent allowed to wear long sleeves so cant wear the jackets its bloody freezing!

TaraLott · 19/01/2014 15:26

Yes, on both the cold and the fleeces, they are hideous.

spilttheteaagain · 19/01/2014 15:44

I know what you mean, it is very noticeable. Mind you when it was v hot in the summer after being out as long as I could stand at the park I would take 2yr old DD into the adjacent supermarket and dawdle in the cold bit as long as pss with her enjoying the air con effect! It was lovely

TheDoctorsNewKidneys · 19/01/2014 15:44

What ddubs said. It's worse when you have to work there and can't wear long sleeves!
